Decorating the front door from the inside with your own hands. Do-it-yourself finishing of metal doors: useful tips How to decorate an entrance door

Sooner or later there comes a time when the front door loses its presentable appearance during operation. appearance. Of course, you can replace it with a new one, but if the structure itself is still strong and reliable, it’s better to get by cosmetic repairs, especially since covering the door with finishing material will cost much less.

If you follow the technology, sheathing the doors yourself will not be difficult. Let's consider the features of finishing wooden and metal doors, as well as the nuances of choosing materials for them.

Choosing material

Assortment finishing materials great for doors and they all have their pros and cons. In order not to get confused and choose the right one, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the brief characteristics of the most popular ones.

Vinyl leather

Vinyl leather is an economical alternative to genuine leather

This material is one of the varieties of artificial leather. It is a film applied on top of some fibrous web. The basis for vinyl artificial leather can be paper, knitwear or other fabric, which is usually impregnated with special polymer compounds to increase strength.

The material can have different colors and textures; moreover, it has an affordable price and is practical to use. Therefore, vinyl leather cladding is a good substitute for natural, very expensive material.

Lining

Lining is slats made of wood, MDF or plastic, equipped with special grooves that make it easy to assemble them into a single sheet. It is suitable for finishing both wooden and metal structures, but installing it on the latter is much more difficult.

For the outer part of the door, it is preferable to use a material resistant to external influences, for example, larch. More budget option– plastic, which also withstands moisture and is not subject to corrosion and rotting. But you need to take into account that such panels can fade in the sun, so covering doors with plastic clapboard will be unprofitable if they are often exposed to direct sunlight.

Lining made of wooden slats

Faux leather

Leatherette is an artificial material that replicates the structure of natural leather. In addition to its attractive appearance, it has other advantages:

  • strength;
  • efficiency;
  • easy care.

The disadvantage is sensitivity to temperature changes and high humidity, which leads to cracking and thereby shortens the service life of the coating.

Leatherette

The name of this material comes from the Greek word “derma”, which means skin. In construction terminology, leatherette is usually called imitation leather. Surely many have heard about him. But why is this material so popular?

Prevalence of dermatin for different finishing works due to its positive qualities, such as:

Leatherette is also easy to process and install, which allows you to carry out work even without special skills. An additional advantage of this coating is vapor permeability, which means that the door under the skin will be able to “breathe”, which means that the wood underneath will not become damp and moldy.

Genuine Leather

A door upholstered in genuine leather looks luxurious and emphasizes the wealth of the owners, which is valued in some circles of society. The following also speaks in favor of leather covering:

  • durability of the material;
  • good sound insulation;
  • additional protection against heat leakage.

Leather is the epitome of luxury

But the price of such upholstery will be many times higher than that of various substitutes. Another nuance that should be taken into account is the need for careful skin care using special products to maintain its elasticity.

PVC film

PVC film, which usually has a self-adhesive backing - very practical and inexpensive material. The top layer of this coating can imitate various textures: stone, wood, velor, metal, etc. This film is sold in rolls and is a good way to update the surface of a metal or plastic door. Its main advantages:

  • low maintenance requirements;
  • low price;
  • simple installation;
  • moisture resistance;
  • no damage during installation on the surface to be glued.

True, there are several disadvantages - the inability to hide serious defects in the door leaf and relatively short term services.

PVC film allows you to imitate any material

The listed materials are the most commonly used for upholstery and among them there will certainly be a solution suitable for your home. Of course, the final choice depends on your preferences, financial capabilities, the condition of the door and the material from which it is made. Considering that correct installation coating is no less important than the correctly selected material; below we will consider several methods of covering metal and wooden doors using the example of lining and leatherette.

Leatherette upholstery

So, how to cover a door with leatherette with your own hands? The process has some differences for wooden and metal structures, but the preparation stage and the necessary tools are almost identical in both cases.

Preparation for upholstery

Door dismantling

To install the coating yourself, you will need the following tools:

  • sharp stationery knife and large scissors;
  • industrial stapler;
  • hammer;
  • pliers;
  • screwdriver;
  • brush.

Before starting work, you will need to remove all fittings from the door (peephole, handles, lock). Then the structure is removed from the hinges and inspected for any defects; if any are found, they must be eliminated.

Next, the leatherette needs to be cut to the size of the door, making an allowance of 10-15 cm on all sides. In addition, you cannot do without cushioning material, which will give the upholstery the required volume. If the door is not located inside the dressing room, but goes out onto the street, then it is advisable to take care of its insulation. The following materials can perform this function:

  • isolon tape – has a long service life (about 70 years), is effective, but quite expensive;
  • foam rubber - can last about 15 years and has average heat retention properties;
  • batting – service life is 30 years, has good performance, but makes the door structure somewhat heavier.

Wooden door trim

Securing material around the perimeter

The upholstery process begins with laying insulation, cut to the size of the structure, on the prepared door leaf. The material must be secured using a construction stapler or nails; before doing this, you should lubricate the surface of the door with glue for a more durable fixation.

Next comes the crucial stage of attaching the upholstery. To do this, it is better to use special decorative nails, matched to the color of the leatherette or the rest of the door fittings. The upholstery fabric is laid in such a way that the overlap on all sides is the same. Then the edges are folded inward, ensuring that the fabric is evenly folded and tensioned. Now all that remains is to fix the leatherette with nails at equal intervals around the perimeter of the door leaf.

Once the fabric is securely attached, you can add a pattern to the cover using decorative tape and upholstery nails. Ready-made pattern diagrams are given below, but you can also invent something new, focusing on your taste and imagination.

Schemes decorative fastening leatherette

Metal door trim

Upholstering a metal door is done a little differently, but the process is even simpler than with wood. After all, you won’t have to nail leatherette to the metal, and this part of the work is the most labor-intensive.
After preparing the canvas, which is identical to that described above, the door is removed from its hinges and placed in a horizontal position. The insulation is attached to the metal using glue, taking care to lay it correctly the first time to avoid further displacement.

Then the leatherette itself (part of the material with an overlap) is attached to the ends of the door, lubricated with glue. It is better to start from the top, then fix the material from the side of the hinges and the lock, and complete the installation with the bottom end. It is important to avoid wrinkles and distortions.

After the glue has dried, use a sharp stationery knife Excess material should be removed and the fittings should be reinstalled. When cutting holes for door handles, locks, etc., do not forget that the slots should be smaller than the dimensions of the fittings. Otherwise, the holes may become noticeable and spoil the appearance of the structure. At this point, the work is completed, and your front door not only looks updated, but also provides additional heat retention in the house.

Finished design

Door trim with clapboard

Another way to inexpensively and tastefully update a door structure is to make doors from clapboard with your own hands. Where to start? Relevant for wooden panels next tip: if the finishing material was stored outside the house, but will be used for interior cladding, then a few hours before the start of work it is worth bringing it inside the room where finishing is planned. This will allow the wood to adapt to humidity and temperature.

Wooden door

For plating wooden door You will need the following materials and tools:

  • panels made of selected material;
  • measuring instruments (tape tape, level);
  • pencil;
  • suitable cutting tool;
  • screwdriver;
  • plane and sandpaper;
  • screws or nails;
  • varnish and brushes.

Standard lining

The preparatory work is similar to that performed when covering with leatherette. The door leaf will also need to be dismantled, cleaned and the fittings removed. Then you need to decide on the direction of the cladding - it will be horizontal or vertical.

The lining begins to be installed from the bottom edge of the door, checking the accuracy of its location with a level. It is better to fasten the material with special finishing nails, which will stand out less against the background of the coating, but you can also use self-tapping screws.

Panels can be attached in different ways

During installation, the panels are fastened tightly, inserting each subsequent one into the connector of the previous one, and the sides are covered with special corners. After completing the main work, the lining can be opened with varnish. Then, after waiting for it to dry completely, the fittings are installed on the door, and the structure itself is returned to its place.

Metal door with clapboard trim

Metal doors covered with clapboard will be a little more difficult to make due to the strength of the metal. To attach the panels you will have to build wooden frame, attached to door design, and then install the finishing material on it.

To make a frame you need:

  • bars or slats made of wood;
  • drill and screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • saw;
  • pencil and tape measure.

Frame installation

The slats need to be adjusted to the dimensions of the door (length and width). Then drill holes in them to match the diameter of the screws, attach the frame components to the surface of the door and apply marks to the metal through these holes. In designated places metal structure will also need to be drilled.

Next, the frame elements are attached to the door leaf with self-tapping screws. The resulting structure can perform another function - serve as a basis for laying insulation. If you want to reduce heat loss, the selected thermal insulation material laid between the frame slats.

The next stage of work is finishing. The panels are installed identically to the method described for a wooden door and using similar materials.

Panels from lining – good decision for finishing and simultaneous insulation of the door

Decorating a door is a fascinating and creative process, but a responsible one. However, if you have a desire to try yourself in this matter, do not hesitate. A serious approach and a little training before starting finishing work will allow you to turn your ideas into reality, and the resulting result will be a reason to be proud.

Methods for exterior finishing of metal entrance doors

The front door is an important attribute of any room, the main consumer properties of which are reliability and safety. But another equally important quality of the front door is exterior decoration, which allows the visitor to make a first impression of what lies behind it. These days, more and more owners of houses and apartments, as well as non-residential office premises, prefer to install metal entrance doors. The finishing of metal doors can be very diverse, as they say, to suit every taste and budget.

The types of steel door finishes used by the company meet not only the requirements of safety and strength, but are characterized by the use of modern design trends:

  • powder coating has high protective and at the same time decorative properties, as well as an affordable cost;
  • plastic is wear-resistant and easy to use;
  • vinyl artificial leather allows you to create models with high thermal protection of the door and a cozy decorative design in an economy class;
  • PVC gives the product chemical and heat resistance, ensuring its durability;
  • veneer gives the product an expensive look at low cost;
  • SIBU panels are a practical and stylish finish;
  • bronze and silver patina allows you to create chic retro models with metal overlays;
  • array natural wood This luxury option decorations decorating the interior.

Types and finishing options for entrance doors

For the right choice For door finishing options, you need to familiarize yourself with the materials used for these purposes. It could be:

  • natural wood;
  • laminate;
  • powder coating;
  • leather vinyl;
  • anti-vandal film.

You need to decide on the finishing option for the front door at the stage of ordering it from the manager of the manufacturing company, who will offer finishing materials suitable for your case. When choosing a material, you need to know where the door is installed, more precisely, whether its outer side will face the street or the entrance, and also take into account the wishes of the customer and his financial capabilities.

Exterior finishing of metal entrance doors

Decorating entrance doors with natural wood is expensive, stylish and luxurious. This option for external door decor is suitable for a private household or a chic restaurant, to emphasize the status of the owner and his well-being. The finishing of steel doors with natural wood of valuable species is done manually, which is one of the factors influencing its cost. As a decoration for wood trim Various carved patterns, frescoes and ornaments can be applied to the canvas.

Laminate today is almost the most popular material used for the exterior decoration of steel doors, but it can also be used to decorate their inner surface. Laminate has a beautiful appearance, a pleasant texture and a fairly inexpensive cost. In addition, it is stain-resistant and electrostatic. External door finishing with laminate will serve for many years.

MDF panels used for finishing steel entrance doors perfectly imitate natural wood and have a huge palette of colors and shades. This type of finishing of steel doors also increases the heat, sound and noise insulation of the room.

Powder coating as a method of finishing a metal entrance door is resistant to any mechanical damage and has many colors and shades, which allows you to choose a coating that is ideal for the facade of a building or the interior design of an entrance. Such doors are quickly manufactured and last quite a long time.

Types of finishing of entrance doors necessarily include such material as leatherette. A door finished with it will not at all resemble a door covered with dermantine in a standard Soviet five-story building. Modern leatherette, used for decorating metal doors, has a rich color scheme, interesting texture and pleasant appearance. The use of leatherette as a finishing material necessarily involves the installation of additional insulation, which significantly increases the noise and heat insulation of the door.

Another type of finishing of metal doors is decorating them with anti-vandal film, which, as can be understood from its name, effectively resists any mechanical damage. And the variety of shades of this film and the pattern applied to it allows you to imitate natural wood of valuable species, artificial finishing stone. In addition, it is not susceptible to ultraviolet radiation, moisture resistant and has high fire safety.

Any exterior finishing of a metal entrance door offered by our company will be of high quality, reliable and durable.

The front door forms the first impression of your home, so it must be both reliable, aesthetically attractive, and well-installed. At the same time, the full installation cycle includes steps that are often neglected out of ignorance. These include finishing the slopes of the front door, which is necessary not only for the beauty of the structure, but also for high-quality operation over time.

What is it?

As practice shows, slopes are often confused with platbands, since platbands are their external, decorative part. By themselves, they serve only an aesthetic function. But the slopes are involved in ensuring tightness, sound insulation and thermal insulation, and increase the resistance of the front door to burglary.

By definition, slopes are the internal and external parts of the wall that “surround” door frame. Slopes are also considered to be the left, right and top sides of the doorway in which a door is supposed to be installed, but is not installed. Not all types of doorways have slopes on both sides. Sometimes they may be absent from the outside, but in most cases they are present from the inside.

Device door slope quite complicated. High-quality slopes are not just parts of the wall protruding beyond the frame, they are an optimal combination of materials, each of which is necessary to perform a separate function. Materials are applied according to the “layer cake” principle.

The first layer is rough. To create it we use:

  • Primer. It is applied to the cleaned wall surface as a pre-finishing coating. Primers are necessary to level out the absorbent properties of the surface, as well as for improved “adhesion” of the following materials to it.

  • Foam plastic. This layer is not required, but is desirable in cases where the wall needs to be insulated. This is true for apartments on the lower floors and private houses.

  • Plaster. The primer improves the adhesion of materials to the wall, but does not level the surface. Plastering is necessary to fill irregularities, depressions or cracks in the wall. This process is the most labor-intensive and time-consuming and requires certain skills and abilities.

As an alternative, you can use a material that is easier to use - drywall. This option allows you to quickly prepare the surface for further types of finishing, but it is not suitable in all cases. In the Russian climate, it is more often used for interior decoration or in warm regions with high humidity.

  • Reinforcing corners. These are thin but durable metal corners necessary to protect plaster on slope corners. The front door is a high-traffic area, and the corners of the opening often get touched, hit, or scratched. Without proper protection, plastered corners will quickly begin to crumble and lose their presentable appearance.

  • Putty. With its help, all defects are smoothed out after installing the corners. Putty compounds are applied in an uneven layer, so after they dry, the surfaces of the slopes need to be cleaned. For this purpose, fine-grained sheets of sandpaper or low-power sanders are used. Furniture is also suitable if it reaches hard-to-reach places.

The second layer is finishing, or front. There are no strict rules in choosing finishing options. It depends only on individual preferences and financial capabilities. The only condition that must be met is to choose a finish that is harmoniously combined with the door leaf and wall decoration.

How to decorate the inside of the apartment?

The slopes protrude from both the outside and the inside doors. Accordingly, there are two types of finishing - external and internal. The external one, as a rule, is less variable. The main focus is on the design of the door leaf, and the slopes echo either it or the decoration of the walls. More often these are practical and concise options that do not attract attention.

Inside an apartment or house, the finishing of slopes becomes part of the interior. It plays a decorative role, so the types of materials and methods of decoration are of great importance.

Finishing facing materials from the inside there are the following types:

  • Plastering the surface.
  • Gluing finishing materials.
  • Frame sheathing.
  • Coloring.

For the first type, plaster, primer, water and all the necessary tools are used. This process takes a lot of time, but makes it possible to putty all the unevenness, insulate the structure, and make a layer of the required thickness. Decor from other materials is often applied on top of the plaster, but in itself it is already considered a finished finish, and therefore refers to basic techniques under repair.

“Clean” slopes after plastering can be easily painted in any color. suitable color, while they are polished until smooth or, on the contrary, left in relief.

The following materials can be used for decoration:

  • Ceramic tiles (tiles). It is distinguished by its rigidity, moisture resistance, hygiene, low price and a wide range of colors, shapes and textures. The ceramic surface is easy to care for, but the tiles can crack or break off due to mechanical damage, and during the replacement process you will have to work hard to avoid damaging neighboring elements.

The undeniable advantage of tiles is the many possibilities for design. The mosaic looks especially original. It can be made from solid tiles small size or from small pieces. Mosaic fragments are obtained artificially from tiles by cutting them into pieces required sizes, and handymen can use for this purpose broken tiles which is considered unsuitable. The result is original and unique, and the cost of materials is minimal.

Any construction adhesive is suitable for gluing tiles. Apply it evenly with a plastic spatula, and the seams are rubbed down after a day with a rubber spatula.

  • Porcelain tiles. This material is often confused with ceramic tiles. Indeed, in the manufacture of porcelain stoneware, the same composition of the substance is used as for tiles, but the production technology is very different. As a result, the tile has a colored coating only on top and becomes unsightly when chipped, while porcelain stoneware has a uniform color throughout the entire thickness of the slab and damage to it is less noticeable. Also, its structure is denser, so it is more resistant to damage. In addition to being moisture-resistant, environmentally friendly and durable, it is also frost-resistant. In appearance, this material is more noble, but the color spectrum is very limited and its cost is higher than for ceramic tiles.

  • Decorative stone. It is truly an interior decoration, although it is not always appropriate and is expensive. The peculiarity of this material is that it can be used to imitate real masonry. It has an attractive appearance, adds zest to the interior, and is impeccable in terms of performance. The stone does not chip, is easy to clean, is durable and safe materials. To fix it on the surface of the slopes, construction glue is used, but there are also ways to “cover” the surface with decorative stone.

  • Wallpaper. Wallpapering is perhaps the easiest to perform and budget method decor. It is most convenient to stick wallpaper on slopes with plasterboard trim. The glue will “grab” on the plaster, but the surface will have to be leveled especially carefully so that “bubbles” do not form on the wallpaper.

Considering the large traffic at the entrance to the room, it is better to choose wallpaper that is washable and in dark colors.

The openings are sheathed using the following materials:

  • MDF. Panels made from fine particles are very popular in all types of finishing. They are universal for any interior, look aesthetically pleasing and have a number of other advantages: durability, variety of coatings that imitate different breeds wood, ease of installation, improved sound insulation and thermal insulation in the room.

  • Chipboard. Chipboard finishing- the easiest way to tidy up part of the doorway if, after installing the door, it looks bad. In this case, you won’t even need a primer or putty. It is enough to sheathe the surface with even sheets that match the tone and pattern of the door leaf.

  • Laminate. Laminate siding is widely used for two reasons: it is inexpensive and looks much more solid than non-laminated materials made from reclaimed wood. The basis of the coating is fiberboard or chipboard (therefore, “sewing up the slopes with chipboard” means the same as laminate), and the top is decorated polymer film. The most common option is stylization to look like precious wood, but there are also other shades in a dark and light palette. It has a number of advantages inherent in all wood-based materials, as well as certain disadvantages. Thus, among the most common disadvantages are hydrophobia (the material can delaminate and swell from water) and average wear resistance.

  • Extras. Covering internal slopes with additional wood is more of a necessity than a decorative element. Extensions are narrow plates made of different materials, which are necessary for masking slopes whose width is more than 7 cm. As a rule, they are used when the door and slopes must be sheathed in the same style and with the same materials.

  • Drywall. The choice of drywall is relevant when you need a high-quality and budget-friendly result that is convenient to work with your own hands. In addition, plasterboard perfectly levels the surface for decorative finishing in the future and enhances the insulating properties of the front door.

  • Plastic. No matter how versatile MDF, laminate and similar materials are, plastic door requires decoration of the adjacent space with PVC-based materials. The use of sandwich panels is especially popular. They have variable widths - from 5 to 150 cm, which allows you to cover each side of the slope with just one piece.

The performance characteristics of the product are also excellent: aesthetic appearance that lasts for a long time, biostability, resistance to humidity and temperature changes, the presence of air sections inside the panels that ensure the preservation of heat in the house, hygiene.

Modern technologies plastic manufacturers guarantee it environmental safety and non-toxic.

  • Siding. The characteristics of siding panels are very diverse, because they are made from various materials– from aluminum to plastic. Aluminum, copper, wood, basement and vinyl siding are used for finishing slopes.

The best option is vinyl. It is a monolithic PVC panel, main feature which is flexibility. It can be given absolutely any shape, ideally adjusted to corners without joints or gaps. Vinyl is not subject to rotting and burning, is not afraid of water, does not crack due to temperature changes, is easily cleaned of dirt, and is not of interest to fungi and insects. The front side of the panels can be plain, with a pattern, stylized as stone, wood or brick.

Frame cladding involves the preliminary installation of a metal (aluminum) or wooden profile around the perimeter of the doorway, to which any material is subsequently attached using self-tapping screws. This method is considered the most labor-intensive, since before attaching the profile it is necessary to prime and level the slopes with cement mortar.

Some types of materials (plaster, chipboard, MDF and drywall without decorative coating) require painting to harmonious combination with indoor interior.

For these purposes the following are used:

  • Acrylic paints. They are convenient to add to the composition for plastering the surface. This simultaneously reduces the number of finishing steps, since surface leveling and painting occur simultaneously, and makes damage less noticeable, since the entire layer of plaster is painted over;
  • Water-based. Such paints can be added to the plaster or painted on the wall over the leveling layer. Using acrylic and paints on water based, it is important to remember that they must be primed from above, otherwise the surface will get dirty. You can dilute the primer yourself using PVA and water in a ratio of 1:5;
  • Latex based paints can also be used in two ways, but their advantage is that a final primer is not needed. Latex compounds are not hydrophobic and are easy to clean;
  • Alkyd and oil. These compounds are indispensable in conditions of high humidity. They are more wear-resistant and dense, but they are more difficult to work with due to their thick consistency and toxic odor.

How to insulate?

Thermal insulation and sound insulation are the functions of the front door, which partly depend on the type of finishing of the slopes. To insulate a room, you don’t have to run to the store to buy a heater. First you need to take care of maximum tightness, and you should start with the front door. This will not only increase the level of comfort in the house, but will also help in the future to save money on utility bills.

Insulation of slopes from the inside is carried out step by step:

  • Selection of materials. The leading positions are occupied by sandwich panels, plasterboard, polystyrene foam, mineral wool, and polystyrene. Experts recommend choosing polystyrene, which is superior to other materials in many respects. At a relatively low cost, it is capable of thermoforming and vacuum forming, is resistant to moisture and chemical treatment, does not smell, is environmentally friendly, can be different types processing. If there is no polystyrene, it can be replaced with a mineral slab (wool).

  • Preparatory work. They include all measures to clean the work surface. Needs to be cut polyurethane foam, remove the old coating, if any, and eliminate unevenness as much as possible. After removing the old plaster, the surface must be dusted with a vacuum cleaner and a damp sponge.

  • Primer and putty. It is necessary to prime the surface of the slopes. This will ensure high-quality adhesion of subsequent layers to the wall, and also minimize the likelihood of fungi and bacteria appearing on the wall. Any deep soil will be suitable for this purpose. After applying it, the surface should be allowed to dry for 3-4 hours. Repeated application of primer to plaster is acceptable.

It is not necessary to putty the slopes, but it is advisable, especially if the surface has many defects, chips and depressions. All these minor gaps greatly affect the insulation properties of the front door.

  • Installation of insulation. At this stage it is the turn of the insulating material. Polystyrene boards and mineral wool glued with specialized adhesives. The glue is applied to the slab with a spatula, then it is applied to the surface of the slope and adjusted to the level. The drying time for the glue is at least 24 hours. After this, the plates are secured with dowels.

  • Fastening the insulation. Ideally, polystyrene or mineral boards should be covered with plastic mesh for interior finishing work. This will protect against cracks and unevenness in the future. The glue is applied to the mesh in layers, each layer dries to hardness in 6-12 hours.

  • Leveling the surface. Here again you will need putty. You can level the surface with up to 2-3 layers. Then you need to let it dry for the time indicated in the instructions on the container, and treat it with fine-grained sandpaper. The grain number on the sandpaper package is at least 100.

  • Final finishing. Includes the application of a colorless primer followed by painting or any other method of decoration.

It is important to consider that finishing materials have not only their own characteristics that affect thermal insulation, but also their weight. It is necessary to calculate in advance whether the insulated slope, for example, will withstand the weight of porcelain stoneware or lining, or whether it is worth giving preference to paint, plastic, or wallpaper.

Colors

Slopes are a small detail that can either support the style in the interior or completely break from it. Inappropriate color finishing will become an element that violates the integrity of the overall picture, so it is important to choose the right color in accordance with the design of the door and the decoration of the walls, floor and ceiling in the room.

Decorative cladding is an indispensable option for restoration old door. The durability and wear resistance of the door leaf is affected not only by production characteristics, but also by the quality of the linings. Facing panels, in addition to beauty, increase the performance characteristics of the canvas and increase its service life. This article describes in detail the methods of cladding the front door.

Decorative cladding is most relevant for metal doors, which are often installed at the entrance to an apartment or house. Such fabrics are superior to their analogues: their protection indicators and service life are higher. However cold metal does not always harmonize with the warm colors of the hallway. To make the door look organically in the setting, it is sheathed on the inside. Old wooden, fiberboard and chipboard canvases can also be decorated.

To improve aesthetics, doors are painted, covered with decorative films or covered with leather. The most economical and energy-consuming method seems to be cladding with linings made of plastic, wood, MDF and chipboard. The panels are easy to install, low maintenance, and durable. Many increase the protection and thermal conductivity of the door.

What materials can you use?

For cladding, linings made of natural or artificial materials are used - wood, plastic, MDF, chipboard and PVC plates.

Natural wood

Natural wood paneling is a premium method. Use fragments or arrays hard rocks wood: beech, ash, oak for decoration iron doors. The advantages of natural panels include aesthetics, but labor costs during processing and extraction explain the high cost.

Advantages of natural wood cladding:

  • possibility of additional finishing and painting;
  • environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic;
  • wide range of textures and patterns;
  • frost resistance;
  • thermal insulation;
  • sound insulation;
  • compatibility with other materials;
  • the service life of a sheathed door is 30–50 years;
  • chemical resistance.

Solid wood and fragments are easily restored. To increase moisture resistance, they are treated with protective coatings. Antiseptic impregnations provide protection against microorganisms. The natural origin of a material means the variability of its characteristics. Weight and density change due to the hygroscopicity of wood, where swelling occurs even in rooms with low humidity.

MDF

Fiberboards are produced by pressing wood chips under thermal influence. For protection they are treated with veneer, painted or laminated. Painted boards are used in interior decoration, veneered - in the outside. Laminated products are universal, where in the price-quality ratio they have decent performance characteristics.

Advantages:

  • simple installation;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • strength;
  • thermal insulation;
  • sound insulation;
  • ease of care.

A wider range of textures and colors in relation to natural wood, but less resistance to chemical treatment. Cleaning with abrasives is unacceptable. Inexpensive panels have low moisture resistance. They are not subject to fragmentary restoration after damage - dismantling is required.

Attention

Even MDF covered PVC film, unstable to mechanical damage, ultraviolet radiation and temperature changes. Recommended for interior doors.

Chipboard, plywood, OSB

When thermally pressing laminated boards, binder resins of non-mineral origin are used. The materials are sanded on both sides and veneered with phenol-formaldehyde glue. Marine plywood is treated with frost-resistant varnish, which makes it suitable for outdoor use. A wide classification of chipboard, OSB and plywood allows you to choose the material for any room and work.

Advantages:

  • are not deformed;
  • affordable price;
  • stable workmanship;
  • low weight;
  • simple installation;
  • resistant to moisture (swelling - up to 10%);
  • strength due to the multilayer structure.

The heat and sound insulation properties of chipboard are higher than those of plywood, but the material is less moisture resistant and aesthetically pleasing. OSB, while low in price and environmentally friendly, has lower decorative parameters due to the pressing of large chips. Layered slabs are vapor-tight and resistant to microorganisms.

If environmental requirements are not met during production, increased formaldehyde emissions are observed. It is necessary to choose well-known and proven manufacturers.

Plastic covers

Solid composite plastic overlays are used for finishing entrance doors. Due to the absence of a decorative layer, they are resistant to atmospheric conditions: the coating does not crack or peel.

Advantages:

  • moisture resistance;
  • long service life;
  • there are enhanced modifications to protect against pets;
  • affordable price;
  • wide range of colors.

Among the disadvantages is the low representation of finishing materials on the market. Homogeneous texture limits design possibilities. The products are low-strength compared to other materials.

Attention

Plastic linings do not lose their original appearance with regular care. They do not require the use of abrasives and are easy to clean.

PVC and fiberboard panels

A solid decorative fabric is formed from PVC and fiberboard panels up to 50 cm wide. Sheathing is possible only with a uniform texture, but the problem is solved by installing decorative overlays. Experts are skeptical about this method of door design, but in practice they highlight its significant advantages:

  • affordable price;
  • simple installation;
  • service life 10–20 years;
  • beautiful view;
  • impact resistance, wear resistance, moisture resistance of fiberboard;
  • PVC has absolute moisture resistance.

To clean, just wipe with a damp cloth. Damaged fragments can be easily replaced. The service life of fiberboard is shorter, but it is not subject to deformation. PVC panels are not resistant to shock loads.

Do not use abrasives for cleaning. They fade when exposed to direct sunlight.

Laminate

Floor coverings are initially prepared for high loads. Laminate finishing will not be damaged even by the claws of pets. The fragments are mounted through a tongue and groove with a longitudinal displacement.

Advantages:

  • increased wear resistance compared to other materials;
  • resistance to temperature changes;
  • easily restored with wax or valve markers;
  • service life - from 20 years;
  • wide selection of colors and textures.

Cons: high price, susceptible to moisture. Due to the narrow dimensional grid, it is difficult to calculate the amount of material needed, which leads to a large balance. For the same reason, fragments require trimming. Metal doors are sheathed after installing the gusset.

Laminate is not suitable for covering doors facing the street in private homes.

Coniferous lining

Unlike laminate, lining is more resistant to moisture, so it is suitable for interior work in rooms with high humidity. The canvas is formed from edged pine or spruce boards up to 20 mm thick. Attached to metal frame, therefore suitable for covering metal doors.

Advantages:

  • pine smell;
  • can be painted;
  • increases strength;
  • soundproofing;
  • low thermal conductivity;
  • unique design;
  • durability.

Attention

Due to the reduced fire resistance of the material, treatment with fire retardants is required. To resist the development of pathogenic microflora, linden and larch are protected with antiseptics.

Required Tools

After selecting the material, consider the subtleties of its processing. For example, for panels from natural wood You will need antiseptic impregnation, varnish or other protective coating. Required Tools for cladding with panels or slabs:

  • a screwdriver if self-tapping screws are used;
  • hammer if nails are used;
  • screws, nails;
  • cross-shaped bits for a screwdriver;
  • drill for metal with a diameter of 3.10 mm;
  • anti-corrosion primer;
  • clamps;
  • degreaser (white spirit);
  • medium-grain sandpaper;
  • tape measure, square;
  • brush, roller (for painting);
  • marker, construction pencil.

If products are fixed with an adhesive base, then epoxy glue or liquid nails are recommended. If you need to cut parts, you will need scissors or a hacksaw. To dismantle the fittings, you need a screwdriver and pliers.

How to do the work yourself?

From the inside, the panels are often fixed to the frame, especially if insulation is used. Installation with glue or self-tapping screws is relevant for exterior finishing.

  1. First, the fittings are removed.
  2. Metal sheets are sanded with sandpaper, degreased with white spirit, and then treated with a layer of primer.
  3. Contaminants are removed from wooden sashes, the surface is degreased, and cracks are filled with putty.
  4. Self-tapping installation steps:
    1. remove the door, lay it horizontally;
    2. attach the trim to the door leaf;
    3. make markings for screws - 3 vertically and 5–6 on the sides;
    4. prepare holes in the panel according to the finished markings;
    5. secure the panel with clamps;
    6. drill holes for self-tapping screws in the canvas through the markings on the panel;
    7. Using a ten-millimeter drill, make indentations on the panel to recess the heads of the screws;
    8. fix the panel;
    9. With reverse side Mark the canvas for fittings;
    10. cut holes for the handle, peephole, lock using a drill or router;
    11. install the fittings and plugs on the screws.

    Fastening with self-tapping screws in a hidden way is possible with two-layer installation when the panels are attached on both sides of the canvas.

    Holes are drilled through the panel, and the inner panel is attached to the base with self-tapping screws. The outer plate hides the caps, and the heads of the hardware are closed with a seal.

Both natural and artificial materials are used for door trim. They differ:

  • aesthetics;
  • operational characteristics;
  • accessibility;
  • service life.

When choosing a material, you need to take into account the purpose of the panels, where only wear-resistant panels for finishing are suitable for entrance doors.
