On construction market Today you can find many different materials that differ in price. It is simply impossible to definitively answer the question of which roofing material is the best, since in certain conditions one must proceed from certain advantages and disadvantages. Many homeowners give their preference to bitumen materials or ceramic roofing, but steel is in no way inferior to them, and sometimes is even a much better solution.

Steel roofing sheets amaze with their diversity. It can take the form of smooth sheets that are joined by seams, but it is also found in the form of tiles. To create such a material, galvanized steel is used, additionally coated with a layer of polymer. Thanks to this, roofing sheet steel copes well with corrosion and external factors.

Such sheets of metal are called paintings. A roofing steel thickness of 0.5 mm or more is sufficient to provide high quality home protection. For roofs with a large surface area, rolled steel is used, which speeds up the installation process. For small country house It’s much more convenient to purchase ready-made, cut sheets.

Fastening is carried out with clamps. All connections have the form of folds, that is, curved seams. They can be single or double, standing comb or flat lying. The specific choice depends on the junction of the paintings and the need for waterproofing. It is recommended to additionally treat the folds with silicone sealant.

Steel roofing - main types

Today, such roofing can be made from various materials:

Tools and materials for work

Steel roofing is installed after certain preparatory procedures have been completed. Necessary:

  • check the angles of the slopes, since the roof should have a slope of no more than 30 degrees and no less than 16;
  • check the strength of the sheathing, the pitch of the beams and the reliability of the fastenings. This procedure is especially important, since poor-quality sheathing can lead to sagging of the roof;
  • carefully check all steel sheets for dents, cracks, bubbles and other damage.

Then begins the preparation of the tools that will be needed for roofing work:

  • roofing nails 4*50 mm with a special head for fastening to the sheathing;
  • nails 4x100 mm for fixing hooks and crutches;
  • special hooks designed for attaching gutters. They are usually made from steel scraps 2 cm wide and 42 cm long;
  • crutches for eaves overhangs. Used for fixing overhangs (more details: " ");
  • picture clamps;
  • machine for folding seams (also exists). For laying the roof small house You can get by with a manual machine.

Stages of installation work

Work begins with the installation of crutches along the entire cornice. The distance from the edge is 150 cm, the laying step is 70 cm. All crutches are nailed to the sheathing. They are necessary to support the paintings. To prevent the crutches from moving, they are first placed along the edges of the cornice. After this, a cord is stretched between them, along which the individual elements are aligned.

Next they move on to the installation of paintings. This can be done using a variety of tools, but the best way is to use a folding machine. Types of folds are distinguished depending on the location of installation: lying folds are made along the short side, standing folds are made along the long side. This allows for good drainage of water from the roof surface.

Roofing sheet steel GOST provides for fastening with seams, both single and double. In areas where water accumulates the most, only double connections are used.

The finished sheets are attached to the base using clamps, which are nailed with one end to the beam and the other into the rebate. All clamps are attached to the ends of each sheet. In this case, each sheet is shifted by 5-6 cm so as to spread the lying folds to the sides. The ridge folds also shift in a similar manner.

After installation, all excess elements are cut off with metal scissors. The resulting sections are treated with a primer. To make them more airtight, the folds are treated with silicone sealant.

Installation steel roofing must be accompanied by the following features:

Repair work: what are the specifics?

Repair work on such a roof they differ in a number of features. The fact is that disassembling a separate section of the roof is very problematic; the procedure itself is labor-intensive and time-consuming. But there is an alternative approach that allows you to quickly complete repairs at a completely high level.

Small damage up to 5 mm in size is sealed with sealant (acrylic or silicone) or special red lead grease. Such compositions are applied using a spatula in a layer up to 8 mm thick. In addition, the use of bitumen-based adhesive tape shows good results. After repairs, the work site is sanded and painted with special paints.

In most cases, such roofs do not require frequent repairs. Damage is often caused by extreme loads or mechanical stress. For example, accumulation of snow, higher than the calculated amount or a fall of a tree branch. Also, in case of careless behavior with the material and damage to the protective polymer layer, the metal begins to corrode, which leads to rusting and the appearance of holes in the roof. Therefore, it is recommended to handle the material very carefully during installation. In addition, regular inspections should be performed to check for rust spots and accumulations of snow or fallen leaves.

Installation of a metal roof: installation and assembly ").

“The most important thing is the weather in the house” - this applies not only to relationships within the family; this phrase is not without its direct meaning. A lot depends on what the “head” of your house is covered with and how comfortable the climatic conditions are. For this it is very important to choose correct coverage roofs, the type and type of roofing, the material from which it is made, a quality manufacturer, as well as designs that are suitable for the chosen type of covering and much more. The concept of “roof” includes a huge number of details and nuances. This article will help you understand what “modern high-quality coating” is.

Why is seam roofing so popular now?

Seam is a type of seam used to join sheets of metal roofing. The seam type of roofing is the most modernized and durable way to protect your home from negative influence any weather conditions. Tightness, strength, possibility of application various technologies installation, material, modern system fastenings, guaranteed absence of any through holesdistinctive features this type of roof.

Varieties

Copper seam roofing

This type of roofing has its own varieties, depending directly on the material. The most elite type - msingle seam roofing.

Copper as a material has its own properties that characterize it, such as high mechanical strength and, accordingly, suitability for machining, and thanks to the chemical process of “auto-extinguishing” corrosion, copper sheets have such quality as durability (at least 150 years!). That is why seam roofing made from rolled copper is considered a premium coating.

Aluminum roofing

Of course, aluminum is almost as durable as copper. Seamless aluminum– one of the new trends in the field of roofing materials. In relation to copper this is more affordable option. The features of this coating are lightness, relative strength, and corrosion resistance. Huge selection color range thanks to the enamel coating - exactly what will help emphasize the individuality of your building.

Seam roofing made of titanium-zinc

Titanium-zinc – material with reliability and ductility. But at the same time, it is not as “flexible” as the above materials: due to its capriciousness, titanium-zinc can be quite unpredictable in winter time. What it has in common with copper is the patina it develops during use, which makes it almost as durable and noble as copper. And the exceptional aesthetics of the appearance will satisfy any preferences of the most capricious clients.

Galvanized iron with enamel coating

However, despite everything, galvanized iron was and remains the most common folding material. Why? Firstly, of course, due to its low cost compared to other materials. Secondly, due to galvanization, the roof has good reflective properties and protection from overheating.

But we should not forget about the disadvantages of iron - poor sound insulation and a shorter service life - up to 50 years (corrosion processes are still inevitable).

"Pros" and "cons" of seam roofing

In addition to reliability, tightness, strength, a modernized fastening system and high quality, seam coating has many advantages and in addition to the above:

  • Light weight material. This is very important because... this fact allows you to use almost any type of design, including the simplest ones, which can save you a lot of money;
  • Materials according to your own chemical properties are not flammable. And this is a huge plus for safety for you and your property;
  • Smooth roof surface. Smoothness allows water to flow quickly and in a localized manner without lingering;
  • High flexibility and ductility of the metal compared to other roofing materials. Makes it possible to cover roofs of absolutely any shape;
  • Relative ease of repair;
  • Quite a long service life– approximately from 20 to 150 years;
  • Wide range of coating colors;
  • Anti-corrosion coating;
  • This type of roof Suitable for both ventilated and non-ventilated surfaces and for absolutely any type of base;
  • Huge range of widths and lengths panels;
  • Direct production of materials takes place either at the factory or at the roofing site from long products thanks to the use of ultra-modern portable equipment;
  • Availability of a ventilation system, snow retention, drainage;
  • Quick and fairly simple installation this type of roof.

Well, and, of course, as in every type construction work, standing seam roofing has its own shortcomings, although there are not so many of them. Here are some of them:

  • Quite high thermal conductivity, which leads to winter time to the formation of icicles on the roof;
  • Due to the smoothness of the roof surface, snow and ice can roll down like an avalanche.

However, this drawback can be eliminated: in winter, hire specialists who will clear the roofs of snow and icicles. Under no circumstances try to do this yourself without the necessary equipment and experience, because... Due to slipping and smoothness, the surface is very dangerous!

  • Poor sound insulation;
  • The need to install a lightning rod;
  • Upon very detailed examination and close-up, you can see “bruises” on the surface of the metal, but this in no way affects the quality of the seams.

Climatic conditions for this type of roofing

The main feature of our climate type is seasonality and wide range temperature regime due to this. Among other things, a wide variety of precipitation throughout the year is the most severe test for roofing and roofing materials of any kind and type.

Seam roofing is the most universal look coatings for our type of climate, because it protects the house in almost all weather conditions. Including from rain and leakage associated with it, because... There are no through gaps on the surface due to the peculiarity of the seams. As for winter, here, as mentioned above, it is advisable to resort to the help of specialists and spend a little money to ensure complete guaranteed safety for you and your family members.

Useful advice: in regions with increased solar activity or extremely hot climatic conditions, this polymer coating for standing seam roofing as pural. Pural is a polymer that prevents the negative effects of such natural factors as high humidity, salts of various compounds after radioactive fallout and other harmful emissions.

Practical application of folding

Folding is one of the most modern methods installation of a metal covering, which allows you to connect metal sheets to each other using a special seam - a fold (single or double, standing or lying). It is this type of fastening that creates special kind pattern on the roof surface. The technology for making such a seam is quite complicated, but it ensures durability, quality and tightness.

Seam roofs are used everywhere, in all areas of construction: both in municipal, industrial, commercial structures and buildings, and in private construction of dachas, houses and cottages.

Installation

Installation of any roof is a painstaking task and requires maximum care and certain skills. For installation of seam type roofing, mainly two main technologies are used: roll installation technology and traditional technology.

Roll roofing is considered more mobile, since the materials for the roof are prepared right on the spot; this requires sheets of metal of a certain required length. With this technology, a standing double seam is usually used.

If we talk about traditional technology, then everything is much more complicated compared to the above, because there are more stages of installation, and they themselves require a lot of time. First you need to prepare the drawings, then create the so-called “painting” blanks - metal sheets. Naturally, to mark and work with this technology, you need to acquire modern tools and special aids. However, the game is worth the candle.

Each technology has its pros and cons depending on the structural features of your roof, the underlying structures, and materials.

Below we describe the step-by-step technology for installing a seam roof with illustrations for each stage.

Favorable weather conditions for installation

Of course, for any construction work best conditions- warmth and dryness. But, unfortunately, it is not always possible to guess. You need to think through everything before the smallest details: snowfall, ice, rain, decreased daylight hours, etc. - everything that can delay or extend the completion of work. Remember to carry out roofing work at temperatures below
-15, -20°C is not recommended at all.

And if you are still determined, then the most best advice- this is to pull an awning over the entire area of the house to avoid covering the surface with snow or ice, damage to materials, etc.

Required Tools

You may need many tools and attachments for them, and the most basic of them are:

  • any measuring devices, such as a level, plumb line or level - a tool for determining the difference between the heights of certain points on the surface in relation to the set level, for measuring the excess of the level;
  • scissors (electric for cutting and manual for cutting), as well as a nibbler - a special machine for quick sharpening;
  • to construct the sheathing, it is better to use a jigsaw and a hacksaw;
  • "Bulgarian";
  • perforator and drill;
  • a pressing gun may also be needed;
  • mallets (both wooden and rubber).

And please take one piece of advice: cutting seam panels with cutting angle grinders is permissible only if the untreated areas are protected from sawdust that fly out, and the cut areas are painted with an anti-corrosion solution.

Required materials and installation tools

There are also a huge number of auxiliary tools and special materials that may be needed during the installation process. Looking at the picture, compare the numbers and see what it looks like and where it should be installed.

  2. drainage system;
  3. sheathing;
  4. an important counter-lattice (the so-called counter-bars) are bars that are placed on the rafters, directly onto the water barrier material;
  5. waterproofing;
  6. insulation;
  7. vapor barrier;
  8. the most common double-sided tape;
  9. ceiling lining;
  10. technological lathing;

Roof structure requirements

There are many types of roofs. The main division is based on the slope: pitched and flat. If the slope is more than 10%, this is a pitched roof surface, and up to 2.5% is, accordingly, flat. Also, roofs can be attic or non-attic (in other words, separate or combined) depending on constructive solution. Roofs can be divided into single-pitched roofs (supported on load-bearing walls, different in height; suitable for building utility rooms), gable (consist of two slopes that rest on walls that are equal in height), three-slope, four-slope and multi-slope - depends on the shape of your roof.

Fig. 16. Shed roof

Rice. 17. Gable roof

Which roof shape will be more suitable for the covering you have chosen? This question is best left to professionals who can inspect your “fortress” on the spot. However, it must be taken into account that for individual construction of residential premises it is usually the most suitable look— pitched and flat-sloped roof structures.

The need to install snow guards

Seam roofs, given the smooth surface of the coating, are in dire need of installing this part.

They are installed above the roof fence. If the length of the slope exceeds 10 meters, it is necessary to install snow guards in two rows. In advance, during the direct installation of the roof, you need to install an additional profile (usually 12 cm from the sheathing). The bracket is secured with a dowel through a sealing gasket (rubber) and a seam panel to the sheathing.

For safety reasons, do not attach brackets to one sheet .

Processing of wooden roof structures

It is highly recommended to process wooden surfaces(basically, this is antiseptic and fire retardant - fire protection treatment). It can be done either before assembly or after assembly of the structure. Before assembly, individual beams and boards are processed various methods, including immersion in a container with a solution. After assembly, you can treat the battens and rafters either with a spray or by applying the solution with a brush.

Removal of roofing

Dismantling the roof is just as important as installation; it is the same painstaking and complex procedure, which requires certain knowledge, experience and special tools.

If you are not sure that you can dismantle the roof correctly, according to all instructions and safety precautions yourself or even with the help of friends and acquaintances, then best option– seek the help of qualified specialists. They will do it quickly, professionally and efficiently, although not cheaply.

For “correct” dismantling, special devices are used that will help remove roofing material without damage so it can be reused. This is very important because... It is known that most materials for seam roofing are not cheap.

Notable Examples of the Use of Folding

The metal has been thoroughly tested for thousands of years, and this technique of connecting it, such as a seam, has been tested for at least centuries, and in combination with modern and modernized installation systems makes it indispensable in construction.

Here are some interesting examples folding.

Tampere, Finland

This is not only the building of the city library, but also interesting specimen modern architecture, which consists of autonomous bodies of different diameters and heights.

Stockholm, Sweden

In this image we see the use of seams (both lying and standing seams), as well as the use of a striking architectural solution - “twisting” the metal. This is a photograph of the Swedish museum in honor of the ship Vassa, which sank more than three hundred years ago. Such a “torn” image makes the viewer more deeply perceive the tragic story of the shipwreck.

Helsinki, Finland

The peculiarity of the roof of this building is that the joints of its roof are made “staggered” using seam roofing technology from metal sheet blanks (about 4 m in length).

Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

This building is known as the “gramophone house”. Its “highlight” is a bright green roof of a specific shape. Regarding the technology used in this case, we can say that the horizontally located workpieces are connected by a recumbent seam, and on the edges the use of a single standing seam is noticeable.

Amsterdam, Holland

In the waters of the port of this amazing and mysterious city there is a green ship - a rather strangely shaped building. His main technological feature– use of artificially aged copper.

Seam roofing is a great option for roofs with a slight slope. German craftsmen invented the seam roof (you may have already guessed it from the name). In translation, “seam” simply means a gutter, and the installation of a seam roof consists of such simple connections - snapped or clamped, and that’s it. But why then, with such simplicity, seam roofing is not common?

The problem is that previously the fold was made from sheets only by hand. The process was labor-intensive, the joints were not very smooth and it was difficult to talk about the tightness of such a roof. And only with the advent of professional equipment did seam roofing rediscover itself: smooth connections, any length and speed of installation did their job. Want to know more?

The roof, which is made from individual metal sheets, is called seam roofing. Seam roofing appeared in Russia a little over 100 years ago, and quickly gained its popularity. And with the production of mechanical and electric seaming tools (previously, seams were connected only by hand), its installation became accessible to everyone. See for yourself:

Among the advantages:

  • Light weight of the roof, which is valuable for any buildings.
  • Excellent protection against leaks. All thanks to the tightness! There are no through holes anywhere on a seam roof that could become a source of corrosion or other problems.
  • Seam roofing is also attractive due to its ease of installation, which almost anyone can handle.
  • Such a roof can be done not only on ordinary pitched roofs, but also on more complex architectural objects.
  • Seam roofing looks aesthetically pleasing and can be combined with any type of building materials.
  • The main advantage of a seam roof is the 100% tightness of the roofing covering, under which neither snow nor rainwater can get under. The fact is that such a roof has a minimum of holes, unlike a metal roof, which means there is a minimal risk of moisture getting into the under-roof space. No corrosion!
  • 20 years minimum service life. In principle, seam roofing is durable due to the fact that its connections are inaccessible to water. Plus there are no transverse seams and open places connections that would prevent water flow and snow melting.

And also quite simple installation:

Let us note right away that all the shortcomings that are usually attributed to seam roofing come precisely from improper installation.

  • Thus, the most common complaints are about loud noise from rain, when drops simply drum on the seam roof. To avoid this, you need to use a perfectly flat sheathing, then the metal sheets will fit tightly enough to it and not create a noise effect.
  • Repair of folds is periodically necessary. It depends on how they were made and with what.
  • An avalanche of snow. Yes, on such a flat roof he has no choice but to quickly slide down, but what are the snow holders for then? In Europe, for example, they don’t even insure a house if there are no such elements on the roof.
  • Simple design and lack of a wide choice of colors and textures. Yes, not everyone likes the minimalistic aesthetics of a standing seam roof. But a matter of taste is always a subjective matter, and someone just doesn’t want to see the ubiquitous metal tiles.

Now look at what else you can do to get rid of the noise:

Selection of design and material

To make it more convenient for you, we suggest that you first understand the concepts a little.

Paintings- these are rectangular metal elements with folds, which are mounted on the roof. The standard shape is steel sheets in the form of a rectangle with cut-out corners. The seam roof is made from paintings.

fold- This is a specific seam that is obtained by fastening different sheets of metal together. The advantage is that with such a connection the density is quite high, and neither sealants nor adhesives are needed to ensure complete tightness. And, in addition to their main task, the folds also play the role of stiffening ribs for the entire roof.

Klyammer- This is a special fastener that is nailed directly to the base of the roof. A simple clamp has the same shape as the future rebate blank, and a movable one ensures future thermal expansion of the metal (compression and tension in different times year).

As you can see, everything is simple and you don’t need to worry about anything.

Material for making paintings

Seam roofing is made from both galvanized steel and various non-ferrous metals. Here are the materials that seam roofing is most often made from today:

Option #1 – steel

The most common option. Steel seam roofing can be galvanized, non-galvanized, or additionally coated with polymer. The advantages are corrosion resistance, low cost and durability (60 years of service).

But over time, steel, unfortunately, noticeably tarnishes. Therefore, to install a seam roof, steel paintings should only be taken that are covered with a colored multi-layer coating. And when purchasing these, make sure that they have a special protective film on them - this is the only way the material will not get scratched during transportation.

But in any case, even a high-quality polymer coating on the roof will not be durable: due to sun rays, acid rain and the most important enemy - the humid marine climate.

Option #2 – copper

This is the most beautiful roof, which simply burns on a sunny day. Its main advantage is that no biological life will take root on it, especially moss. But there are also many disadvantages - such metal is soft, requires careful handling and is quite expensive.

Over time, copper also becomes covered with patina - a layer of oxides, and becomes dark brown. And after a while - green, and nothing needs to be restored. And it is precisely because of the oxides that copper cannot be combined with other materials on a seam roof.

Copper seam roofing is also valuable for its flexibility - it is easy to create roofing architectural masterpieces, not to mention simple roofs:

Option #3 – zinc

The zinc seam roof is additionally covered with a protective layer – zinc carbonate. Over time, such a roof acquires a chic silver-gray color. A zinc roof lasts for about 50 years, which is relatively short, and therefore in Europe such material is no longer used for making paintings.

Option #4 – aluminum

This type of roofing is the most resistant to mechanical damage and corrosion, and can last more than 100 years! And the pleasant silver shine will only please the eye.

In addition, this material is lighter than steel and more resistant to corrosion. But aluminum is bad because it expands and contracts much more strongly with temperature changes. That is why the installation of such a roof has its own characteristics:

Option #5 – zinc-titanium

This is a strong, successful alloy of zinc and titanium: zinc does not corrode, and titanium has both strength and ductility. This coating is also valuable for designers, because over time it becomes covered with a noble patina. The roof looks great!

Option #6 – aluzinc

Aluzinc is steel paintings with an aluminum-zinc coating, which has valuable self-healing properties and perfectly protects scratches and cuts from corrosion.

Option #7 - an alloy of three metals

Titanium-zinc-copper alloy. There is not much copper here, only 0.005%, but this is enough to give the roofing material plasticity, which makes profiling easier.

Special coating

If your house is located in a coastal area or an area with poor environmental conditions, or simply a hot and humid climate, then purchase folded paintings covered with pural. Only this polymer is capable of protecting at a high level from sea air, rain with acidic impurities and scorching ultraviolet radiation.

Production technology

Seam roofing is also divided according to production technology - into cast and roll.

Cast roofing has long been used in Russia, and its reliability has already been tested. It is easy to install such a seam roof with your own hands and without special tools, there are no transverse seams, and the surface is complete and durable. But rolled seam roofing is already new technology with its advantages and disadvantages. These are metal strips for the entire length of the slope, and immediately with prepared edges using a special machine. The fold is formed double.

And according to the width of the patterns and the presence of stiffeners, seam roofing is divided into the following types:

  • Double fold and two stiffening ribs. This type of roofing is most in demand in the industrial sector. It is used to destroy warehouses and large buildings with very different roof slopes. Standard width– 5.57 m, working – 5.45 m.
  • Double fold and two stiffening ribs, but smaller width - 35.2 m (working 3.4 m). This type of roofing is used to cover the roofs of cottages, large residential buildings and historical monuments.
  • Double fold without stiffeners. There are also two types of such roofs, based on the actual width - 5.57 m and 3.52 m. Both are quite suitable for residential buildings and ordinary private houses.

And folded panels can also be ordinary and starting, trapezoidal and parallel:

Market offers

If we talk about brands, in Russia, as well as abroad, the most popular Finnish seam roofing is from the Ruukki company, with self-latching seams.

More favorable prices are available for materials from the domestic plant “Insi”. It has been on the market for more than 16 years, and is quite pleased with the quality of its products. In production there are both ordinary glossy and matte paintings, as well as unique ones to create special design roofs.

Seam roof installation technology

To install such a roof, you do not need any special supports, expensive lifting equipment, or additional consumables.

Stage I. Preparing the foundation

Seam roofs can be installed either on sheathing or on a solid base. Both bars and metal hat profile are suitable.

It is only important to adhere to the spacing between the rafters of no more than 2.5 meters - otherwise even the strongest steel sheets risk bending and the seams will immediately separate:

Here's how to fold the backing sheet yourself:

Stage II. Working with paintings

On workplace You can bring both finished paintings and rolled steel, which you will cut on the spot.

Once the steel paintings are ready, they are lifted onto the roof. Lay out along the cornice directly onto the sheathing and begin installation from the middle.

Stage III. We prepare additional elements

For roofing roof edges, valleys, ridges and elements such as chimneys, roof joints and dormer window, it is necessary to make ready-made paintings from rolled steel in advance - but in a curly shape.

Here is a detailed master class on how to make your own drip edge for a seam roof:

Stage IV. We bend the folds

So, we moved on to the most important technological question: how to make folds?

Types of connections

The folds in such paintings are single and double, standing and lying. To simplify, all horizontal folds are called lying folds, and vertical folds are called standing folds:

A single standing seam is the easiest to install:

A double fold is a double fold of the edge. It must be done in the most problematic areas of the roof, where snow and water usually like to accumulate - valleys, gutters and other complex joints. This is the strongest and most airtight, which is why it is also the most popular abroad.

Double standing seam is recommended for roofs with a slope angle of less than 25°. True, in Russia, double folding is still considered an unreasonably expensive technology. Although in fact the price is exceeded quite a bit, the reliability of such a connection is much greater. Here's how you can make it during the roof installation process:

But, if you want the seams between the paintings to be smooth and the entire roof to look even, then make rebated seams. And horizontally, the paintings are connected to each other only by lying folds - so that the coverage is maximum. If the captured steel strip does not reach the depth, such paintings will disperse over time.

The third type is a corner standing seam, which is also called L-shaped. It is recommended for roofs with a slope angle of more than 25°. It is simpler to perform than a regular fold - you just need to bend the top edge of the seam correctly.

Height of stiffeners

Now let’s talk about the height of the rebate, which also serves as a stiffening rib for such a roof. The fact is that this connection is absolutely waterproof unless it is exposed to standing water. But where on the roof can it come from in this form? Very simply - from the thickness of the snow. Therefore, the height of the rebate matters, and in especially snowy regions it is done quite a lot.

Additional sealing

Additionally, to prevent water from entering the seam, special sealing gaskets are installed in the seam during the installation process. A special material is used that can easily withstand impact high temperatures(up to 90°C) and compression, because rolling mechanisms for folds will still be used.

Another important point: all fasteners that you will use must only be anti-corrosion. Otherwise in a couple of years a new one beautiful roof will be covered with rusty streaks.

Folding technology

You can fasten the folds together using a hammer and wooden beams, with special hand tools or using electromechanical machines. The simplest option is with a frame:

Before folding the folded fold, the picture must be attached to the flooring with a separate narrow strip to stabilize its position.

The fold is made from the front and back, and on the left and right there are vertical elements of the fold.

Using a clamp

The most common fastening method is clamps. They are bent back 25 mm, and the paintings are nailed on the right side.

The clamp is a metal strip made of galvanized steel, 80-120 cm long and 0.5-0.7 mm thick. You can cut the clamp from a regular galvanized sheet using a simple hand tool. Next, place the clamps along the edge of the paintings every 60 cm and fasten with self-tapping screws (4.8x28).

So, first we put the picture on the crate, then we fasten it with a clamp and only then we cover it with another picture. You need to nail the clasps along the line connecting the two paintings: one sheet is placed on the clasp from above, and the second is slipped from below, and we wrap three layers of metal in one direction, after which we close the folds to the end. We press it, and we get a strong and reliable connection with the clamp, which is hidden inside and holds both sheets on the roof. This type of fastening is a 100% guarantee against leaks and cold air for many years.

Now let's figure out how the work of a professional differs from that of an amateur. Yes, for the usual home handyman with quite dexterous hands, one mallet, scissors and a hook bender are enough to install gutters. But an experienced person, an expert in his field, equips himself with at least a dozen expensive special scissors, not to mention frames, pliers and other tools. Moreover, the total cost of such a set may be more expensive than the folding machine itself.

To close folds today, a semi-automatic tool is most often used, the use of which provides many significant advantages:

  • High performance.
  • High quality seam.
  • Preservation of the polymer coating of paintings.
  • Ability to work with metal of any thickness.

Recently, paintings have also begun to be produced, the folds of which easily snap into place when pressed - and no tools are required!

The construction of a private house is completed by roofing work. This stage is considered one of the most difficult and reliable. Moreover, difficulties are associated not only with the roof structure itself, but also with the choice of covering. This is quite difficult considering the huge variety of roofing materials on the market.

No matter how strong and durable the material is, the reliability of the finished roof covering will depend on the quality of the connection of the individual elements. Today, seam roofing is extremely popular, when laying it a special type of fastening is used.

Seam roofing, what is it?

Seam roofing is a continuous covering laid along the entire length of the slope. Its individual elements, rebated panels or pictures, are connected to each other by special elements - rebates.

Seam panels are metal sheets, the side edges of which are specially prepared for this type of connection.

To make a metal seam roof, you can use ready-made paintings (0.555x8 m) or roofing metal in rolls. In the latter case, special edge bending equipment is used, which is installed directly at the installation site. The manufactured picture panels can have folds of different shapes, single or double, and different lengths. In any case, they are rolled in one pass.

The metal for a seam roof can be of almost any type:

  • copper;
  • aluminum;
  • steel;
  • alloys of zinc and titanium.

Note

Galvanized seam roofing, as a rule, has a polymer layer of pural, polyester, plastisol and others.

All of them are durable and simple, do not corrode. These materials are lightweight, easy to mold, and can take any shape, even the most bizarre.

Types of roof folding

Metal sheets have a tendency to thermal expansion, which can create certain complications during connection. The penetration of water into the roofing pie can be prevented by laying a uniform waterproof layer on the sheathing under the seam roof. However, it will be impossible to achieve a rigid connection due to changes in linear dimensions. In this case, tension arises at the interface, which leads to possible significant deformations.

Experts consider the only reliable option for a mechanical connection to be the use of a special method - folding. By the way, the word “rebate” is of German origin and means “gutter” or “groove” in translation. It involves connecting the edges of adjacent paintings, which are bent in a special way. In this case, grooves are formed along them, which serve to drain water.

Seam connections are classified according to two parameters:

  • appearance: lying, standing or corner fold;
  • degree of compaction: 1. single fold, 2. double fold (photo below).

The folds are rolled up mechanically manually or using a special tool, or electromechanically using special devices.

Main types of standing seams

  • Single. This the simplest way connection, which is used when the seam roof is tilted from 10°.
  • Angular. The special L-shaped shape creates volume and provides the connection with a spectacular appearance, so it is used mainly on “prominent” surfaces that have a large area: facade, with a seam roof slope of more than 25°, etc.
  • Double. This connection is more complicated. It is performed in two steps: first, create a corner fold and bend it at a right angle. New generation seam rolling equipment makes it possible to obtain a double seam seam on roof segments that are technically difficult to process. On small slopes it is better to solder them. Transverse thermal expansion occurs mainly at the base of the rebate, so it is necessary to provide a gap of up to 5 mm there.

The double fold protects the structure from the effects of precipitation, as well as melting snow, but it does not protect from standing water. That is why, according to SNiP, a seam roof must have an inclination angle of at least 10°.

Note

However, if a special sealing tape is inserted into it before compressing the fold, the minimum slope threshold can be 3°.

  • Today, another type of fold is used - self-latching. To connect them, you can limit yourself to a simple click.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Seam roofing, like any other, has its advantages:

  • the plane of the roof covering, assembled from double-seam paintings, is a solid sheet with a smooth surface from which water from precipitation and snow can easily flow off;
  • light weight, which eliminates the need for reinforcement load-bearing structure and thus reduce costs;
  • such a roof can be used for quite a long time - more than 50 years, given the high anti-corrosion resistance of the coating;
  • high moisture resistance, which is explained by the reliability of the rebated lock and the minimum number of holes for fastenings. This level of tightness eliminates possible leaks;

  • simple installation for a roof of any complexity, which you can handle with your own hands if you have a self-latching lock;
  • waste when working with the material is minimal. For example, unused scraps of such expensive material generated during the installation of a seam roof can be moved to other areas. Moreover, unlike, say, such a coating does not require components. Thus, it is significantly more economical;
  • Suitable for slopes of any length, both short and long.

Seam roofing also has disadvantages. Among the most important we note:

  • laying an additional layer of sound insulation that will dampen noise from raindrops, etc.;
  • mandatory installation of a lightning rod that minimizes the risk of influence static electricity, which accumulates on the roof covering;
  • the need for high-quality and expensive tools.

Installation instructions

How does the installation of seam panels take place, how can they be properly connected to ensure the durability and strength of the roof covering? Technological map installation of a metal roof involves the sequential implementation of several stages:

  • Sheets are produced that are specially prepared for folding. This process is carried out in production conditions to order according to individual sizes. This allows you to obtain maximum accuracy when installing a seam roof. In parallel with the panels, shaped elements are also ordered, for example, overhangs or ridges and more.

  • Metal sheets are attached using a special tool or by pressing for self-locking folds.
  • They are attached to the sheathing. For this purpose, narrow strips of the same material as the sheets are used - “clasps”. During the bending process, one end of the fastener is inserted into the rebate, the other is fixed to the sheathing element.

Two different types of clamps are used for fastening:

  • hard. The picture fixed on them remains motionless relative to the base. They are used on any slope, and the location of the hard clamps depends on the angle of the roof;
  • floating. They are used mainly for slopes over 10 m in length. Metal sheets expand and contract during temperature fluctuations, and a hard clamp can cause significant deformation. As for the floating one, the free play of this fastener is enough to avoid such complications.

Metal roofing began to be used at the dawn of the industrial era. For several centuries it coexisted peacefully with asbestos-cement slate, displacing wooden shingles, reeds and slates.

Since the end of the 20th century, steel seam roofing has been gradually losing its position to more progressive metal tiles. Ruberoid also won a significant part of the market, returning to the roof in the form of tiles (bitumen shingles).

However, seam roofing has not yet exhausted its potential. It's reliable and durable coating Today it is experiencing a rebirth. Metal sheets are equipped with a system of self-latching locks that facilitate installation.

Galvanized steel received new types of protective coatings that increased its service life.

Classic seam roofing

The answer to the question of what a seam roof is is very simple. This is a covering made of rolled or sheet galvanized steel, connected by special sealed seams (rebates).

There are several types of folded seams:

  • recumbent;
  • standing;
  • single;
  • double.

The long side edges of the sheets running along the slope are connected with a standing seam, and horizontal joints- lying down.

The most reliable in terms of tightness is the standing double seam. It is used on roofs with a low slope (2-3 degrees). Single seam can be used on roofs with a slope of at least 30 degrees.

Another term unfamiliar to the average developer, painting, has nothing to do with painting, but refers to a mounting element of the covering, the edge parts of which are already prepared for joining into a rebate.

The technology used to install a seam roof is reminiscent of closing the lids of home preservation.

For this purpose, a specialized hand tool(rebated frames), and for large volumes of work - electromechanical seaming machines.

However, the easiest way to mount is a steel sheet with self-locking folds on the edges.

Several types of metal are used to make seam roofing:

  • Galvanized steel (thickness from 0.45 to 0.70 mm). Service life 25 years;
  • Galvanized steel with polymer coating. Service life 30-35 years;
  • Sheet copper. The durability of the roof reaches 100 years;
  • Aluminum. Serves for about 80 years.
  • Zinc-titanium. Difficult to install material. However, if the technology is followed, a roof made from it has no restrictions on its service life.

Advantages and disadvantages

The most critical areas for any coating are the joints of roofing materials and the places where fasteners are installed. The point fastening of a seam roof is hidden under the sheets, and the seam of such a roof is continuous and very tight.

Therefore, such troubles as leaks, metal corrosion, loss of elasticity of sealing gaskets, which are characteristic of metal tiles, are absent here.

The advantages of seam roofs include:

  • Low cost
  • Rich color range;
  • Simple and quick installation;
  • Good water drainage due to the smooth surface;
  • Minimum weight, allowing the installation of light rafters and sheathing;
  • Non-flammability.

Disadvantages of steel coatings:

  • High thermal conductivity (leads to the formation of icicles);
  • Weak resistance to targeted impacts;
  • A smooth coating provokes avalanches of snow and ice, which requires the installation of snow guards, heating systems or regular cleaning in winter;
  • Ability to accumulate electrostatic voltage (installation of a lightning rod is required).

Estimated prices for materials and labor

The approximate price per m2 for the most popular materials for seam roofing is:

  • Galvanized steel (polymer coating pural) - 450 rub./m2;
  • Aluminum - from 1200 rub./m2;
  • Copper - from 1900 rub./m2;
  • Titanium-zinc - from 1900 rub./m2

The price for work depending on complexity is as follows:

  • Steel coating – 550-800 RUR/m2
  • Aluminum and copper coating 600-1000 RUR/m2
  • Zinc-titanium coating 800-1200 RUR/m2

Installation features

Modern installation of a seam roof is in many ways similar to the installation of metal tiles, with the exception of the seam rolling stage. Here it is also necessary to ensure insulation and effective ventilation of the under-roof space in order to minimize the formation of condensation.

You can install a metal roof either on a solid deck or on a sheathing. In the latter case, it is necessary to maintain the same spacing of the bars so that the screws accurately fit into the body of the wood without making empty holes.

All fasteners (screws, nails, clamps and wire) must be zinc coated. If you use ferrous metal, the fasteners will lose strength earlier than the roofing material, and the roof will have to be repaired.

The installation of seam covering consists of five main stages:

  • The first is the production of “pictures” according to drawings for slopes, gutters and overhangs with bending of the edges for a folded seam;
  • The second is lifting the prepared sheets onto the roof and joining them with a standing seam;
  • The third is fastening the installed “pictures” to the sheathing with clamp plates (one end is inserted into the rebate, and the second is attached to the sheathing);
  • The fourth - for all holes for pipes and ventilation ducts install aprons made of galvanized steel;
  • Fifth - installation of fencing (on roofs with a slope of more than 12 degrees and with a cornice height of more than 7 meters).

Today, individual sheets with four edges are rarely used for seam roofing, preferring rolled steel. This saves installers from rolling horizontal seams and speeds up work.

Electromechanical tools for seam roofing made of rolled metal are used everywhere. It provides high quality seams and quick installation.

Using a special machine, rolled metal is cut into paintings right on site, while simultaneously preparing the edges for joining.

Silicone sealant is sometimes used to improve the tightness of joints.

Advantages of roll technology:

  • Possibility of cutting “pictures” of any length;
  • The most durable and tight connection;
  • Fastening with hidden clamps guarantees the absence of corrosion at the fastening points, increasing the durability of the roof.

When using sheets longer than 10 meters, they are attached to the base with “floating” clamps. Thanks to this connection, the roof does not lose its tightness under large temperature deformations.
