Complete do-it-yourself lifting gate drawing. How to make a garage door with your own hands. Guide to making swing gates

Most car owners pay special attention not only caring for your “iron pets,” but also arranging the garage in which they are stored.

Such men often like to make various useful things for their garage.

Garage doors are no exception in this regard. There are many various types this product, however, is the most convenient and practical in terms of self-made is a swing gate type.

At home, making such gates yourself will not be difficult; their design is quite simple. The main thing to understand is that in this process preparatory stage plays a decisive role.

At the stage of preparation for starting work, you will need to carefully think through each working stage, measure all the necessary places and draw up the most detailed drawing future swing garage doors.

We carry out quality measurements

To start with, use measuring instruments such as a tape measure, building level and meter, measure the garage entrance opening. If you don’t yet have a garage, and you are designing it from the very beginning, consider optimal size not only for the entire building, but also for future ones swing gates.

It is important to consider that all components of the garage have their own standards by which it is built. Based on this, the entrance opening must meet certain requirements, the most common today are the following standard parameters:

  • The width of the opening should be sufficient for the average passenger car. According to generally accepted standards, the gap between the car and the edge of the garage opening should be at least 30 cm. It is best, if possible, to make this distance a little larger, expanding the entrance space in case of purchasing a larger car.
  • The height of the entrance hole must be at least two meters.
  • The size of the garage opening should be determined taking into account a few centimeters for the frame. In general, the optimal size for it is considered to be the following parameters: width - from 2.5 to 5.5; in height - from 2.1 to 2.4 meters.

Considering these numbers, you can prepare the most practical sizes that will make it possible in the future not to encounter additional problems. Having measured the size of the entrance opening, think about the parameters of the future design.

Typically, such gates are installed on the basis of a frame, so keep in mind that the frame of the swing garage door leaves will be slightly smaller in size, unlike the frame.

For the gate shutters to move freely and smoothly, the gap between their frame part and the frame must be at least 10 mm; it is better if the gap is 20 mm in the area of the upper and lower edges.

After taking measurements, you can start selecting required quantity materials of the required size. The frame for the garage opening, which will be mounted in the entrance space, is best made from a steel angle; in a rectangular section it should be at least 6 cm, the optimal size is 6x4 cm.

And to form the valves, prepare strong iron profiles with a thickness of at least 5 cm in cross section. To make a coating for swing gates according to standards, it is recommended to use sheet metal with a thickness of at least 3 mm.

We draw up a detailed diagram of the future product

Having obtained all the necessary measurements and thought about the quantity and size of the material, it is time to draw up a detailed drawing. For this you can use ready-made drawings. You can also show your imagination and engineering abilities, if any, and draw a sketch for your personal project.

And if you have experience with graphic computer programs, you can design a model of a garage door in a three-dimensional image. This way, you will have the most complete idea of the future product.

However, in this case you need to be especially careful and understand that for swing gates it is important to correctly calculate the strength of the support beams for the frame. the racks must be strong and withstand the load of sliding sashes.

In order for the structure to be built according to the rules and last for more than one year, it is better to use various options drawings and, based on them, create the most complete drawing of swing gates that suits your parameters. Also, from a practical point of view, it is convenient to draw up separate sketches for the main parts of the future garage door.

So, start by drawing an image of the frame design for the garage opening. It should consist of four supporting metal beams or corners on which special fasteners (ears) are attached for installation.

These fastening elements are mounted in the opening, and the reliability of all garage doors depends on them. The most understandable and correct drawing frame is shown below.

Based on this diagram, you only need to substitute your measurements. After forming a sketch of the frame, proceed to the general drawing. On a large “A3” sheet, using a pencil, ruler and corner, draw a diagram in accordance with the numbers obtained after measurements.

Please note that the most complete diagram swing gates should contain an image of the entire structure, and in the lower left part of the sheet the names of all parts, their parameters, as well as the sequence of actions should be indicated. The most informative drawing for example is shown below.

As you can see, based on the image, you can develop a plan for your future garage door with precision down to the smallest particles. You can immediately mark the places where handles, bolts and additional locks will be located.

Pay special attention to the gaps between the elements of the structure; they must comply with the standards. As a result, the finished garage door leaves should open smoothly, and the hinges should not emit any unpleasant squeaks.

Thus, taking into account all these points, you can draw up a complete diagram of swing gates with your own hands. The main thing is to take the most accurate measurements of the garage opening before creating a drawing, think through all stages of the work as fully as possible, formulate a draft diagram and decide on the required amount of material.

Only after resolving all these issues can you begin to draw up a final version of the drawing.

The finished structure must be integral and take into account possible force effects during use, so pay special attention to the preparatory stage.

If problems arise in the process of forming a sketch drawing, look at additional information sources where you may find good advice. As a last resort, seek assistance from a competent engineer.

To ensure long-term safety of the car, it must be stored in a place that will protect it from rain, frost, etc. But atmospheric phenomena are not the worst thing that can harm the car, so you should equip garages with reliable gates. Pivoting overhead gates are well suited for this task and also have an unusual design. Next, let's look at the features of their design, drawings and the sequence of do-it-yourself manufacturing.

Advantages, disadvantages and difficulties of creating up-and-over gates yourself

The advantages of such structures include:

  • They are difficult to hack.
  • They open without the need for effort.
  • At the right technology creations are durable.
  • Saves internal space.
  • Can be installed in various garage openings.

Flaws:

  • Difficulty doing the job.
  • Mechanical components of the structure may be overloaded.
  • High thermal conductivity.

Despite the need to have basic skills in handling welding machine, as well as some other tools, almost everyone can make swing gates with their own hands. During the work process, you need to use the correct drawings and perform the work exactly with the specified data.

How is the structure constructed?

List of main rotary parts overhead gates:

  • The frame is the main part of the entire structure onto which the remaining elements are attached.
  • A swing-type sash mounted in a steel frame.
  • Return spring - needed for manual closing.
  • The mechanism of movement of the sash.

For the sash, it is better to use materials with low weight indicators - this will reduce the level of load on the structure, which will ensure its long-term and trouble-free operation.

When making a gate frame with your own hands, you need to be guided by the dimensions of the garage opening. It is optimal to choose board panels or wall panels(used for finishing buildings). If insulation is necessary, it is better to use non-flammable materials.

It is especially important before making it yourself to decide on the type of mechanism that will move the sash from one position to another. It can be in the form:

  • A hinged-lever design based on moving hinges along guides, the task of which is to carry out the movement of 2 levers in specific directions.
  • Counterweights that move the sash using a block system.

The second option is easier to make with your own hands, but it implies the need for more materials to create.

What do you need to make your own?

To make homemade swing gates you need to prepare:

  • Welding machine (without its presence, collecting the remaining items on the list is irrational).
  • Drill.
  • Wrenches.
  • Roulette.
  • Screwdrivers.
  • Level.
  • The material for creating hinges and guide components is a channel or angle.
  • Return springs.
  • Corners.
  • Brackets.
  • Counterweights.
  • Guide skids.
  • Cable.
  • Selected elements to create the sash.
  • Steel for finishing.
  • Profile pipe.

Specific data on the amount of materials, their sizes and parameters must be taken from a specific drawing selected or created for a specific garage.

The sequence of work on creating overhead garage doors with your own hands

  1. Assembling the box. It has the appearance of a U-shaped structure, constructed from 3 beams, buried in the mass of the screed of the reinforced concrete floor structure. The depth must be at least 2 cm. To secure the horizontal beam, plates or angles are used.
  2. Installation of hinges. The upper bracket is mounted under the ceiling of the structure. To prevent jamming during operation, you need to make sure that after installing the bracket, its movement along the sash is completely free.
  3. Making the sash. The steel angles are cut to the required length and the frame is welded from them. When it is ready and compliance with the opening is checked, the sash elements are installed in the frame and secured with self-tapping screws. As a rule, insulation is immediately carried out at this stage. Next you need to install the rubber seals.
  4. Installation of rails. This is the name of the part of the structure into which the hinge rollers are inserted. The location of the guides can be chosen depending on the characteristics of a particular garage: on the sides of the top bracket or directly under the ceiling. Once installed, the rollers should move freely and smoothly.
  5. Pre-installation of the sash. This is necessary in order to mark the places where the lifting mechanism is fixed in the sash.
  6. Strengthening the hinge mechanism to the sash. First you just need to attach the hinges and make sure that the levers move freely when the lifting gate moves. If this is not the case, check their correct location (they must be installed parallel to each other).
  7. Installation of counterweights or springs. They are installed on a guide bracket. Springs should be installed to the right and left of the sash. They should also be parallel. Return type springs are required to ensure complete closure of the garage. If their characteristics are not enough for this, then they experiment with a lot of counterweights.
  8. Installation of steel plates. They are attached to the ends of the structure using self-tapping screws.
  9. Plastering joints. To complete this step with your own hands, you can use ordinary cement mortar.
  10. 10. Installation of the lock.

Doing work with my own hands you need to make sure that it is carried out in exact accordance with the selected or created drawing. Each process must be taken with full responsibility - a small mistake can cause problems with the operation of the mechanism. If you are not completely sure that the work is being done correctly, it is better to read the special documentation or ask for advice from a professional who will help you navigate in a particular case.

For home handyman If you are planning to build a reliable garage door with your own hands, the diagram (drawing) according to which they will be assembled should become the main document. Based on this, you can calculate the amount of materials needed for the work and adjust the shutters to the opening with maximum precision to prevent moisture and cold air from entering the room. winter period. Therefore, you need to take this stage of work on installing a garage door with the utmost seriousness.

When designing swing garage doors, care must be taken to ensure that the doors can open at any time of the year.

Another important task will be the assembly and installation of the finished structure. The safety of the vehicle and the service life of the gate itself, the replacement of which will require investment, will depend on the thoroughness of each operation of this process. cash and additional efforts by the owner.

What needs to be done before starting work?

When installing swing garage doors, first of all you should evaluate the topography of the place where the garage is located. Considering that the doors can reach a width of 2.5-3 m, care must be taken to ensure that they can open outward freely at any time of the year.

Their opening angle must be at least 90° to ensure free movement of the car through the opening without the risk of damage side surfaces body If it is impossible to install gates with leaves, you will have to choose more expensive models with lifting mechanism, roller shutters or sliding gates. In any case, before preparing necessary tools and materials, the master will need a diagram, which you can also draw with your own hands.

During the production of the drawing, you will need to put the following dimensions on paper:

  • the width of the opening, which is determined taking into account the width of the body vehicle, plus 30-50 cm on each side from it to the gate frame;
  • gate height equal to 2-2.2 m for a passenger car of any model and at least 2.5-3 m for a jeep or minibus;
  • dimensions of the doors, each of which is equal to half the width of the gate;
  • the dimensions of the gate and the distance to its frame from the edges of the sash;
  • the height of the hinges of the doors and gates, the location of the eyelets for locks and internal gate locks.

In addition to the main dimensions of the gate, you will need to mark on the diagram the location of the stiffeners on the doors and the gate. The finished drawing of a swing garage door may look like in Fig. 1.

In addition to materials, you need to make sure that you have the following tools on hand:

  • Bulgarian;
  • construction and hydraulic level;
  • tape measure, square;
  • welding machine.

Use a grinder to cut a corner for making a gate frame, frame and stiffeners for sashes and gates according to individual sizes and needs.

How to mount a gate frame?

This part consists of 2 rectangular structures, which will later be connected to each other. Hinges for hanging the doors are attached to the outer part of the frame; the inner part is used to hold the gate in the wall opening. They must be made from a corner at least 6.5 cm wide in order to securely hold the garage door, made by the owner of the building with his own hands, when the doors are open.

Figure 2. Diagram of the gate frame stiffeners.

Ideally, the frame should be installed during the construction of the garage.

  1. To make the frame parts, you will need to cut 8 pieces of angle iron with a length equal to the width and height of the gate (4 pieces for each measurement). Lay out the material on a flat surface, forming rectangles from the resulting segments. By measuring the diagonals and angles, achieve a perfect fit of the parts to the opening of the garage wall.
  2. Use a welding machine to connect parts of structures.
  3. Install the resulting rectangular parts in the opening, adjusting them in place, and connect the outer and inner parts with crossbars made of a rod or metal strips, as in Fig. 2. dividing the height and width of the gate into equal sections. When using a rod you can make through holes in the garage wall and, driving pieces of reinforcement of the required length into them, weld them to the frame parts. Most often, the connecting elements are welded over the edges of the opening.

Manufacturing and installation of gate leaves

According to the drawings, measure and cut corner pieces 4x4 cm wide and lay them out, forming the frame of future doors and gates. Align, measuring the corners and diagonals of each of the rectangular structures, and weld the frames.

Cut a steel sheet or corrugated sheet according to the dimensions of the gates, taking into account that their edges should form an overlap of 2-3 cm wide around the perimeter of the gate frame. The wicket canvas should also have the same overlap. This measure is needed to bridge the gaps between the frame and the frame of the sashes. This will prevent excess moisture from entering through the cracks, eliminate the occurrence of drafts in the insulated garage and additionally protect the garage owner from strangers entering the premises.

To attach the sashes to the frame, you will need to weld the hinges:

After installing the leaves in place, hang a gate on one of them, using the same sequence of actions that was used for the gate. Install latches, hooks and handles after the sashes are completely installed. Weld the eyelets for the padlock onto right place, mortise lock install according to the instructions using welding or threaded connection.

In a heated room, garage doors are installed with your own hands, additionally insulating them with any known heat-insulating material. To hold it in place with inside the shutters must be secured with a sheet of thin steel or corrugated sheet. This can be done by welding or using metal screws.

How to install other types of gates?

Lifting and roller gates imply the use of ready-made mechanisms for opening and closing, so they are often purchased ready for installation or ordered after having previously designed a garage door drawing. In such cases, you can only make and install the gate frame and hang the door leaf yourself according to the attached instructions.

To install sliding gates, a frame is not required, as for other structures. Making such gates with your own hands involves welding a single large-sized leaf. To do this, you can use a sequence of actions, as in the manufacture of a sash with a gate. To hang such gates, guides are installed at the top and bottom of the opening along which the door leaf will move. All accessories are purchased ready-made, and installation is reduced to placing the parts in their regular places in accordance with the instructions.

The simplest and most inexpensive garage door, which can be made with your own hands by a person who has skills in working with metal, is the swing door. They are most often installed by garage owners in garage complexes and private backyards.

What you can’t imagine without is its gate. In the article you will find useful information about how to make a garage door (pivot and swing), as well as what types exist, their advantages and disadvantages.

Nowadays, a garage is not a sign of luxury, but a necessity. It is much better to keep a personal car indoors rather than outdoors. This is more reliable for you and for your “iron horse”.

You can also store a huge number of necessary and unnecessary things in it. Residents of the countryside have the opportunity to equip a garage on their plot of land, building a house together with him or separately, as it suits you.

Types of garage doors

Most types of garage doors appeared here relatively recently, under the influence of technologies used in Western countries. What's it worth? appearance lifting gates that we are used to seeing in American films. Now you won’t surprise anyone here like this.

Swing

They should close tightly, leaving no gaps. Even a beginner can easily make such gates. Often a gate in a garage door is cut out of one leaf. This is convenient when you just need to enter a room without opening the gate completely.

The advantage is that they do not require large financial costs. They have a small drawback - they need free space in front of the garage, which will allow them to open wide. IN winter time You'll have to work with a shovel.

Recoil

Such garage doors appeared around the first half of the 20th century. They are a sash that goes to the side wall. There are garages with double-leaf sliding gates, then they move in different directions or with one multi-section folding leaf.

Most often, such gates are used in hangars and industrial enterprises. In a private building, sliding gates are not installed in the garage premises themselves, but for entering the territory.

Lift-and-swivel

Garage doors have emerged relatively recently. This is one leaf that rises to the ceiling when the gate opens and stops parallel to the floor.

This movement of the gate is carried out using a hinged lever mechanism and guides. The advantage of such gates is that they do not require a large space either in the garage itself or in front of it.

Such garage doors are most often installed in warm regions or in garages with heating. And in any case, the snow will have to be cleared, just like in front of a garage with swing gates, otherwise you won’t be able to drive into it.

Lifting sectional

Garage doors have recently appeared on the market in our country.

This is a multi-section canvas that folds and slides along guides to the ceiling.

To put the gate into operation, a mechanism on a spring and guides with a chain drive are used. Gates are good because they save a lot of space.

Best suited for areas with warm and mild climates. Or the room must be heated. The reason lies in the fact that lever mechanisms when low temperatures may jam, and it will not be possible to open or close the gate.

Roller shutters

Garage doors are not often installed. The disadvantage of garage doors is the unreliability of the design. These are aluminum plates folding into a special box under the ceiling. It is best to use roller gates in protected and heated premises.

Gates of all types can be made self-acting, opening with a key fob.

Before choosing a garage door, study the pros and cons different types gate, read reviews on forums, ask friends and relatives for their opinions.

Decide what kind of garage door you need, beautiful or easy to use. For those who want to make a garage door with their own hands, swing doors are most suitable. This is the most reliable look gate with a simple design.

Instructions for making swing gates for a garage

Swing gates- the simplest type of design.

To make them you will need the following kit.

Materials

Tool

  1. Welding apparatus and electrodes.
  2. An electricity generator with enough power to operate the tool (in the absence of electricity).
  3. Roulette.
  4. Grinding machine.
  5. large locksmith's made of metal.
  6. Drill and drilling machine. Drills.
  7. and a set of screws.

Work progress

Before starting work, you need to draw up a drawing of the garage door. To do this, you need to make a sketch indicating measurements and materials. The minimum width of a garage door should be determined taking into account the distance from the car on both sides to the frame - at least 30 cm and reach 2.5 - 3 meters. The wider the gate, the easier it is to drive inside.

Important!

The distance from the frame to the parallel wall must be at least 80 cm. The height of the garage door is determined taking into account the dimensions of the car. Often varies between 2 – 2.5 m.

The design of swing gates is a frame with hinges on both sides, a frame and the gate itself. The frame is made from a 65 mm steel angle. For the frame of the doors, angles made of 50 mm steel or a rectangular steel profile are taken, which is sheathed with an iron sheet 2–3 mm thick. Reinforced external hinges are required.

Garage door frame

The work of installing a garage door begins with the frame, which is made together with the construction of the main wall.

When the masonry is ready, the height is 50 cm, you need to start installing the gate, and then return to laying the wall.

For the frame, you need to take 65 mm steel corners, metal strips 20 - 30 mm wide and 3 - 4 mm thick, and a reinforcing rod. The frame itself consists of 2 parts: internal and external.

Using a grinder, cut the corner into 4 parts. The length must correspond to the height of the gate opening. We lay the pieces on the floor and check them with a level. We measure the corners, they should all be 90º and fasten them by welding - we get a frame.

Important! If a corner bends during welding, this can be straightened using a lever attached to it from the remnants of the corner. This will help straighten the frame geometry. Keep it in correct position and cook the corners for it.

Frame for sashes

The frame for the shutters is made smaller than the gate frame for ease of entry into the opening, and the shutters themselves must fit tightly against outside frames In the production of the frame, a rectangular profile or steel corners are used.

We divide the material into 4 segments, the length is 10 - 15 mm less than the height of the frame. This is necessary so that the sashes fit freely into the opening. To make two leaves, we take 4 horizontal segments equal to the width of the gate frame, divided in half, and minus 30 - 35 mm.

We place the segments on the floor and measure the angles. We place them inside the finished frame. This makes it easier to see shortcomings and eliminate them.

Gate leaves

For the manufacture of sashes, steel sheets with a thickness of 2 mm are taken. 2 canvases with dimensions are cut out of the material: the height is 3-4 cm greater than the height of the garage opening.

The width is different: one is 1-2 cm wider than the frame, the second is 2 cm larger. The canvas is attached to the frame by welding. At the top and bottom of the canvas extend beyond the frame by 1 - 2 cm.

The width of the leaf of one of the doors does not reach the edge of the frame; there should be a 1 cm margin. The second sash is installed in such a way as to extend beyond the frame by 2 - 4 cm.

Important! Sheet material is subject to deformation during welding, therefore, before starting work, you need to grab the corners and center of the sheet by welding, then attach the entire sheet pointwise at a distance of 10 - 15 cm.

Next, you need to weld the reinforced hinges. The lower half is attached to the gate frame, and the top is attached to the leaf that will open. At the final stage of installing the garage door, we secure the locks. A popular type of lock is one in which one of the doors is locked with locks inside the garage.

Holes are made in the frame at a depth of up to 5 cm. The second sash is locked with a lock, the tongue of which clings to the fixed sash or fits into a deliberately made hole in the sash frame.

Externally the structure is strengthened padlock, which is passed into the ears attached to the doors and connects the doors together. To insulate garage doors, use polystyrene foam or any other modern materials.

In many ways, they determine not only its appearance, but also the degree of income of the car owner. At the same time, not every owner can afford expensive and sufficient complex designs(lift-and-turn or roller shutter, for example), the production of which involves significant costs. That is why most owners prefer to use simple swing structures in their garage, the production of which is not associated with high costs. We advise all those who plan to build swing garage doors with their own hands to first worry about studying the relevant materials.

In the process of studying, you will be able to learn that the assembly of such structures is usually carried out according to the following scheme:

  • production of frame (frame);
  • preparation of gate leaves;
  • painting and insulation of the structure.

Let us consider each of these operations in more detail.

Frame making

Before you start installation work You will need to prepare the following working tool:

  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • square and tape measure;
  • building level.

Installation work begins with the preparation of the frame structure, which is supposed to be used as the frame base for future garage doors. For the convenience of its manufacture, you should first prepare a sketch of the future frame, which consists of internal and external parts. This drawing should indicate the height and width of the frame itself (according to the size of the entrance opening), as well as the dimensions of the internal gate used to enter the garage.

Pay attention! When the frame is welded from a corner, it is most often used to cover the opening.

Preparation of the frame structure begins with cutting channel blanks (or angles) in accordance with the dimensions indicated in the sketch. After this, the resulting blanks are laid out on a hard and flat surface in the order indicated on the previously prepared sketch. During the installation process, it is necessary to carefully monitor compliance with all dimensions, which must exactly correspond to those indicated in the diagram. In this case, the correct formation of corner joints is checked using a square.

After installing the frame, which has been carried out in compliance with all the previously specified requirements, you can begin welding, after which the resulting seams should be thoroughly sanded.

Doors

In accordance with the typical swing gate design, leaves are placed inside the frame structure, each of which is made in the form of a separate frame, which is subsequently covered with a solid metal sheet. For their manufacture, as a rule, the same profile is used as in the preparation of the common frame. Installation of the sashes is carried out in the order indicated below:

  1. First, the frame elements are slightly “grabbed” together for welding.
  2. After this, the shutters are roughly installed inside the frame, laid on a rigid and level base.
  3. If necessary, the dimensions of the sashes are adjusted (taking into account the technological gaps in relation to the main frame).
  4. Once the dimensions are adjusted, the workpieces are finally welded into a frame, which is then covered with sheets of iron 2–3 mm thick (using the same welding).

At the final stage of installation work, hinged hinges are welded to the gate in pre-designated locations. In this case, the lower fixed (supporting) part of the hinge is mounted on the frame itself, and the upper movable part is welded to the frame of the sashes.

Conventional bolts mounted in the top and bottom can be used as internal gate locks. lower parts valves

Painting and insulation of the structure

It will be more convenient to paint all the metal elements of the structure, as well as insulate the wings of swing gates before hanging the latter on the support hinges. Before painting, all treated surfaces must be primed, which guarantees a reliable protective coating that can serve you for many years.

In order to increase the rigidity of garage doors, additional metal jumpers(stiffeners), welded not only to metal sheets, but also to the frame elements in increments of approximately 0.5 meters.

Insulation of metal swing gates is carried out using materials of synthetic origin or foam plastic (polyurethane foam) plates, which are fixed to the surface of the gates using special glue. To cover the insulation boards, any decorative material suitable for the texture can be used.

On final stage work, the doors are hung on hinges, after which it is necessary to check the ease of their movement when opening and closing the gate.
