Country benches with backrest. How to make a comfortable and beautiful bench yourself. The final stage of building a wooden bench with your own hands

In order for the garden plot to be comfortable enough, it should be properly equipped. An important component is garden benches. You can make them yourself in different ways and from various materials.

Bench made of concrete slabs and boards with backrest

By looking at the drawings of the bench, you can find out the features of its structure. You can make such a design with your own hands relatively easily, quickly and without high financial costs.

Making a bench with a backrest with your own hands in step by step instructions described in great detail.

Assembly: initial stage

After preparatory work The time for wood processing is approaching. In order for a hand-made bench with a back to serve for a long time and decorate the area, the materials must be pre-treated.

The tree is covered antiseptic compounds and let it dry. After this you can start collecting backrests

On one of the two-meter boards, fifty centimeters are measured from the edges. At this level the edges of the beton slabs. From this mark another fifteen centimeters are measured towards the center of the board. This is where the first boards will be attached. From the resulting marks we measure seventeen and a half centimeters - the gap between the back boards. Next, we measure fifteen centimeters for two more boards. There should be a gap of five centimeters between them. All this can be seen in the drawing.

Wood glue is applied to fifteen centimeter sections. They are attached to boards, the length of which is sixty-five centimeters. Additionally, they are secured with self-tapping screws.

On top, between the boards of the back, pieces of seventeen and a half centimeters are glued. To ensure that the parts stick together well, they are clamped and held until the glue sets. After gluing is completed, the back is covered with an antiseptic.

All wooden parts can be covered varnish. This will give them additional stability and attractiveness.

Assembly of the main part

It is better to assemble the main part of the bench from both sides. Concrete slabs are placed between the boards, and drilled holes insert M16 threaded rods fifty-five centimeters long. You will need four of them.

The rods are fastened with M16 nuts and washers. They are twisted simultaneously from different sides to make the bench level.

Simple DIY bench

You can make benches for your garden with your own hands quite quickly if you follow the instructions. Let's consider four options for such garden structures.

On drawings benches, all its features are indicated in detail. Making such a bench with your own hands is quite simple. The only difficult element is the concave seat.

The number of parts and their dimensions are indicated in the table.

We begin making a bench with our own hands from wood with blanks necessary details. Boards and beams are cut into pieces of the required length.

Making seat supports will be somewhat more difficult. You will need to mark the blanks. Two points are marked along the edges at a distance of seven and a half centimeters from the bottom side, and in the center a point at a distance of four and a half centimeters. They are connected using a flexible plastic ruler and cut out jigsaw. The sections are processed with sandpaper.

Seat supports are attached to the two upper drawers. One on each edge and one in the middle. Next, screw in the supports, spaced from the outer ones by the width of the leg. All connections are made with self-tapping screws.

Boards are attached to the resulting base seats. It is advisable to deepen the screw caps.

Then attach legs. They are attached to the seat supports. The lower drawers help secure the legs.

The finished product is coated antiseptic and varnish.

Simple bench No. 2

To make such a garden bench with your own hands, you will need concrete flower girls and boards. Flower girls are required to create the base of the bench. Use two with a rectangular base and two cubic ones.

To make the base stable, the flower boxes must be glued or connected from the inside with staples secured with self-tapping screws. The container is filled with a layer of drainage and soil. This increases their stability.

The seat for the bench is made of boards. To do this, they are cut into pieces of the required length. These blanks are laid so that there is a distance of half a centimeter between them. Then they are connected using transverse strips. The planks are placed in three places: at the edges and in the middle. Corners are attached to the slats. With their help, the seat will be secured to the flower girls.

DIY bench with backrest

Prepare the bench parts shown in the figure. They are being processed antiseptics before connecting.

Then the parts are assembled into supports. The corners are first rounded and chamfered. First, parts A and B are connected with a bolt, and then B, C and D are also connected using a bolt.

The inclination of the backrest is determined by part D, after which it is connected to part A. Similarly, but in a mirror image, another support is made.

After this, the back and seat are assembled. To do this, the supports are placed so that there is a distance of one meter and twenty centimeters between them. First, the front and rear strips are screwed to the supports, then all the rest, and finally the stops are screwed in.

On last stage The back of this bench is screwed on.

Bench No. 4Another option for a simple DIY bench. Its length is one hundred twenty centimeters. The height from the ground to the seat is fifty centimeters, the height of the backrest is also fifty centimeters.

The base is made from boards, the thickness of which is five centimeters and the width from ten to twelve. One of the legs continues and serves as a support for the back. The supports are connected using the “half-tree” method and secured with bolts.

The basis for the seat is a block secured with self-tapping screws. The short supports on the back of the bench are connected with a collet to increase stability. The seat and back are covered with boards of less thickness. The surface is painted or varnished.

A simple bench with a back for a summer cottage

Dimensions of the structure and wooden parts can be seen on drawings benches. If we consider how to make a bench with our own hands, then this option will be the most optimal in terms of the simplicity of the process and the result obtained.

It is better to purchase materials already cut to size. If this is not an option, then you need to cut them yourself.

The resulting blanks polished. The ends of the boards are processed with an electric planer.

The back legs of this simple DIY bench also support the backrest. To create the desired level of inclination, the workpieces are marked.

At a height of forty centimeters, mark the attachment point seats. Above, the board is cut at an angle of twenty degrees. The cuts on the two workpieces must be identical.

First they collect legs benches: the front ones are connected to the back ones using a beam. It is better to do this from above and below.

When the side parts are assembled, they can be connected to each other with seat boards. Screw the boards with self-tapping screws, leaving a distance of one or two centimeters.

To strengthen the structure and increase its stability, make the lower harness timber along the legs. Two boards are attached for the back.

Finish the work with finishing coated, which will protect the product from moisture and adverse conditions.

DIY pallet bench

Make a bench with your own hands from pallets It’s not difficult if you use your imagination. To do this you will need three or four of these wooden structures. Some will need to be sawed to obtain additional parts. The simplest DIY bench design is made from pallets, when two pallets are attached perpendicular to each other, creating a back and seat.

To prevent the design from becoming too bulky, it is better to cut the pallets according the right sizes. The elements are fastened with self-tapping screws. Add side parts to enhance strength and make legs. All this can be seen in the photo.

Since the material of the pallets is untreated and rough, it will be required first polish. This will allow you to avoid splinters.

The manufacture of a bench with your own hands from pallets is completed by coating it with varnish or paint.

Bench puzzle

You can make such a bench with your own hands if you have a wide board and cuttings for shovels. Curly seats are cut out of the board in the form of puzzle pieces. Legs made from cuttings for shovels are attached to them. You get separate stools that quickly assemble into one long bench. All manufacturing stages are discussed in detail in step-by-step photos.

Benches from unnecessary chairs: two DIY options

First option

To create such a bench for your dacha with your own hands, you will need four old chair.

From the first two chairs remove parts from the front of the seat.

The remaining sawed off the front legs are slightly lower than the seat structure.

From the resulting parts you need take off old varnish or paint. To do this, a special agent is applied to the parts that dissolves paint coatings. Then the softened layer can be removed with a spatula.

The racks should drill holes for dowels. Holes are required on the front and end sides.

The dowels are lubricated with glue and inserted into the drilled holes.

When the dowels are glued, you can assemble base benches. To make the structure durable, the parts are fastened with self-tapping screws. Surface of the structure sanded.

For seats benches choose a board that is suitable in size, saw off the excess.

If several narrower boards are used, they are glued together with wood glue. For a tight connection, they are clamped with clamps and wait for the glue to dry.

The finished seat is also glued to the base with wood glue. Heavy objects are placed on the board and clamped together with the base with clamps.

When the glue has dried, cover the seat with masking tape and paint paint the remaining structural elements with wood paint.

The tape is removed and the seat is treated stain. Finally, the entire bench is varnished.

Second option

To make a second garden bench with your own hands from old furniture you will need two chairs. It is better if the back and hind legs are not separated.

Two identical chairs clean up all parts of the structure except the rear legs with the back.

They take bars five centimeters wide and three centimeters thick. Cut two parts equal in length to the width of the chairs, and two pieces of the same length as the finished bench. A rectangle is assembled from these four parts. It is secured to the backs of chairs with self-tapping screws.

Another frame is assembled in the same way. Several transverse strips are attached to it. This design is attached under the seat, makes the bench more reliable and acts as a shelf.

If the chairs have old covering, then remove it with sandpaper. After this, the surface is puttied with a special compound or coated with a primer. When the layer has dried, it must be sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. Finally, the structure is coated with paint.

The seat for the garden bench is made by hand from Chipboard or plywood. A rectangle is cut out of the selected material, which is half a centimeter larger than the base on each side. Then cut out a piece foam rubber with the same dimensions. A rectangle is cut out from upholstery fabric. It should be five centimeters larger than the seat on each side.

Foam rubber is placed on a sheet of plywood and covered with fabric on top. The fabric is attached from the inside out to the furniture stapler.

The seat is attached to the base with a piano hinge.

Bench-swing

To make such a bench for your garden with your own hands, you should prepare the necessary materials. Manufacturing begins with creation basics designs. The seat bars are attached to the back bars at the selected angle.

Additional ones are installed along the seat ribs, providing rigidity.

Attached to the seat planks, drilling holes for fastening in the base bars. The same goes for the back.

Armrests are installed on both sides of the seat. They can be secured with bolts.

The resulting bench cover wood protection products and varnish. It is very important to paint everything as carefully as possible.

The bottom of the bench is reinforced with metal profile. Chains are attached to the profile on which the swing bench will be suspended. It is imperative to check the reliability of the beams on which the bench will be suspended.

Log bench

To make such a bench with your own hands from wood you will need chainsaw. The main material is a thick log one meter long.

Log mark, so that you get two slightly unequal parts. The smaller one will be used to make the backrest, and the larger one will be used to make the seat.

Chainsaw log sawed along the mark. The resulting irregularities are immediately cut off with the same saw.

The cut triangular piece is cut into pieces and inserted into the holes in the seat. The back is secured on top. The bench is almost ready. All that remains is to give it a more decorative look.

Can the seat be placed on legs. To do this, recesses are made in the lower part to install a pair of logs as legs.

Transformable bench

The design features of the transformer can be seen in the drawings of the bench. A transformer bench is made with your own hands from planed boards, which is sawn to the specified dimensions.

Sliced timber parts holes for fasteners are drilled.

At the tabletop, the boards located on the edge can be made wavy.

In material intended for countertops, drill holes with a diameter of twenty-two millimeters and a depth of three centimeters. Cuttings of the same diameter will be inserted into them.

The edges of parts and edges are processed and rounded.

All elements are assembled using screws and screws. Screws are needed with dimensions 6x70 and 6x90, screws - 8x80.

Wooden parts are painted stain.

The structural parts that will move are connected by hinges.

Parts of a round shape are placed between the boards of the tabletop. cuttings

Install a stop for backrests

A hand-made transformer bench is covered varnish.

Rocking bench

Do original bench making a backrest with your own hands is not difficult if you have the tools and materials. First you need to consider the drawings of the bench, which contain a small number of parts.

The side parts according to the pattern are transferred to Europlywood three centimeters thick. They are cut out using a jigsaw and the ends are processed with a grinder.

To attach the connecting strips, markings are made. Then the holes are drilled. After assembling the frame, the slats are attached using self-tapping screws. The fastening points are sprayed, and the entire product is varnished.

Bench around a tree

The simplest version of such a bench is hexagonal The size depends on the size of the tree. Measurements are taken at the height of the seat. A margin of fifteen to twenty centimeters is added to the result obtained. If you divide the result by 1.75, you will get the length of the inner side.

To cut boards ten centimeters wide, they are laid in four rows with intervals of one centimeter.

The cutting location is marked immediately for all rows with an angle of thirty degrees. So cut out six sets of blanks.

Legs are used with a height of sixty to seventy centimeters. They are connected by cross members by drilling holes and using bolts and nuts.

The seat is installed so that the joints are located in the center of the ribs of the legs. The outer parts are screwed on first, and then the inner ones. In this way, the entire hexagonal structure around the tree is assembled.

Finally, the back is made and the apron is installed. The result is a DIY circular bench with a backrest.

The finished product is processed oil impregnation.

Bench made of curved branches

A bench made of curved branches will look original. It will require branches for the front part, two legs, a horizontal top and a pair of transverse branches.

Sawing branches so that they fit each other as accurately as possible. Next they are connected by metal corners.

The back part is made in the same way and connected to the front.

The finished product is placed on a flat surface and the seat is assembled.

Bench options

  • Log bench, which blends well with the surrounding nature. It consists of half a log, used for a seat, and two short round logs, which are legs.
  • Beautiful wooden bench with a back and armrests, reminiscent of a sofa. Curved and cut elements make it more attractive, while leaving knots and irregularities gives the structure a natural look.
  • Bench made of wood and metal. The base of the structure is metal. The wooden parts of the seat and back are attached to it. Thanks to the small thickness metal parts she looks light.
  • The bench has a simple, classic shape. It is made of wooden, rather wide boards. This width allows you to sit comfortably on the bench. Armrests make the design more complete.
  • Original bench made of wood with figured details. This option is well suited for a site with a natural, rural design. Carved legs and armrests, a figured back - all this gives the product originality.
  • Bench with an interestingly shaped back. The curved parts gradually bend back, creating a unique design. The seat is slightly curved but has a more traditional appearance.
  • Wooden complex- a table with two benches. The design looks traditional due to the material used. An original solution is the fastening of all components into a single structure.
  • The bench is made of solid logs. A single piece is cut out of it, combining the back and seat. The legs are attached to the bottom. The log required is quite large.
  • Bench with storage box for toys. Outwardly it looks like an ordinary wooden bench-sofa, but under the seat there is a drawer in which you can put various things.
  • A comfortable bench made of wood with a simple shape. The base is made in the form of a rectangular box. The back is also simple with a straight shape. The seat has soft cushions for added comfort.
  • Wooden bench located around a tree. It is made as if it consists of four benches, each of which has one armrest. The composition looks attractive and comfortable.
  • A simple bench made of wide boards. It looks solid, but its dimensions are somewhat concealed due to the gaps between the boards and the light blue, in which it is painted.

The bench is an essential attribute summer cottage or local area. Often there is room on the site for not one, but several benches. One in the yard, another in the garden, the third at the gate. A bench with a backrest is probably the simplest and most useful project which can be done at the dacha.

The beautiful wooden texture of the bench will look harmonious in any garden, especially if you use not just boards for the bench, but all parts of the wood that are available to you in the garden.

In order to make a simple bench, you do not need special skills or expensive tools, and wood in the country is one of the most affordable materials.

If you've never made a bench yourself, we'll show you the basic process so you can create your own little masterpieces.

We hope these beautiful benches inspire you to create your own.

DIY bench with backrest

To begin with, we suggest mastering a simple design that is easy to manufacture and has good rigidity and stability.

Wooden bench. Preparation of materials

In order to make a bench, you will need:

  • 2 short front supports [A];
  • 2 long rear supports (the backrest will be attached to them) [A];
  • 8 short crossbars for tying supports and adding rigidity [B];
  • long boards for the seat and backs (their number depends on their width and the desired size of the bench) [C].

If you are planning to make a long bench with a backrest with your own hands, then make sure that your boards that you have prepared for the seat will not bend under the weight of the people sitting on it. And if the boards really sag, then this can be corrected - you can assemble another support and place it in the middle.

Every detail needs to be polished so that after relaxing on the bench you don’t have to pick out splinters from various interesting places.

Remember also that if you want to dig in a bench, your supports must be at least 40cm longer.

Garden bench. Execution of work

Once your parts are cut to size and sanded, you can begin assembly. For this it is better to use self-tapping screws, but if you do not have a screwdriver, then the bench can be knocked down with nails.

It is important to screw the crossbars with at least two self-tapping screws to each support as shown in the picture. And the greater the distance between the screws, the stiffer the structure will be.

Now all that remains is to paint and let the paint dry.

And this is what you can get. You can give the bench a different look without changing the design. Just use rougher wood and it's a completely different thing! Although structurally its differences are minimal, and it is done in exactly the same way.

DIY bench

But even if this seemed too complicated for you, then there is a design for you for a bench with a back, which can be done with a hacksaw and a hammer in literally a matter of hours.

All you need is six boards of the same thickness (preferably at least 40mm).

Its scheme is elementary simple.

Once all the pieces are cut to size and sanded, it comes together in minutes!

It’s better to drill holes for the screws in advance so that the board doesn’t split during assembly.

This bench looks laconic and modern.
And this is not surprising, because there is nothing superfluous in this design. Each structural element is absolutely necessary and at the same time minimally sufficient. Your bench with backrest can be made in any way, we have shown only the two simplest ones.

Benches photo

If you enjoy working with wood, you may want to expand your skills and add some new original pieces to your bench.

If you are uprooting stumps in your dacha, consider that you have become the happy owner of a unique material for your next bench, which you will make with your own hands.

Often those of us who love and know how to do something with our own hands are simply embarrassed to waste our time on this “nonsense” - it is more important to dig up the garden on time.

The pleasure you will get while working on your garden bench project will give you truly happy moments.
And those around you who were puffing about why you are busy with frivolous things will be proud of your bench, which you made yourself, and tell everyone that you are so unexpectedly talented.

And we are sure that these successes will inspire you to try new ideas, because benches made by yourself are always more practical and comfortable than ordinary standard ones.

Most owners suburban areas, be it a house or a cottage, they want to know how gardening ones are made, and this is not surprising. You now have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with several options, which include drawings and photos of wooden structures. Such furniture can be made portable or stationary, but if you do not use it during the cold season, then the second option is of no use to you.

Family relaxing on a garden bench

What types of garden benches are there?

Rocking bench for relaxation

First of all, let's understand the meaning of this word. In various dictionaries of the Russian language, it is defined as a device for sitting for several people and can be with or without a backrest. Synonyms include definitions such as bench bench, bench, furniture. But the bench is more considered as a low footrest. In our case, this is garden furniture that has a backrest for support.

Such designs differ not only in size - they also differ in other parameters, such as:

  1. product configuration – standard, non-standard;
  2. armrests – in stock, out of stock;
  3. design - with wood carvings or strict straight lines.

Gorgeous wood carved design

Few people can make furniture like the one in the photo above - it is not enough to be an ordinary carpenter or even a cabinet maker. This is the art of wood carving, which requires the mindset of an artist and, of course, practical skills. But every second person has the opportunity to make the simplest garden benches, if they have the tools and materials.

Materials for assembling a garden bench

Edged polished larch board

The main material for garden benches is wood, but it has absorbent properties, which is highly undesirable for outdoor products. Of course, to protect against street moisture, antiseptics such as “Anti-Rot”, Neomid, “Wood Doctor”, etc. are used, but it is better if the lumber itself is classified as moisture-resistant. Therefore, the highest quality garden furniture is made from oak and larch.

In addition, wood exposed to atmospheric conditions (rain, snow, fog, hail, frost, ice, UV radiation ( sun rays), wind), coated with alkyd-urethane varnishes. You can use brands such as Rogneda Eurotex, Varagan Premium Spar Urethane, Dufa Retail, Tikkurila Unica Super, etc. Such compositions will not only protect the wood from atmospheric processes, but also from impacts and scratches - this is possible , thanks to the increased wear resistance of the coating. You can't expect such an effect from paints.

Stock up on the following materials:

  • polished edged board 40-50 mm thick for a seat of any width;
  • polished edged board 30-40 mm thick for backrest of any width;
  • planed edged board 40×70 mm or 50×100 mm for assembling the frame;
  • timber 100×100 mm for the frame (not always used);
  • 70×70 mm block for frame and lintels;
  • antiseptic (liquid preparation);
  • paint and varnish materials;
  • metal fasteners: wood screws, bolts with nuts and washers, steel angles.

Note. In some cases, to make a garden bench with your own hands, you can even use a log, spreading it lengthwise into two equal parts. Also among the lumber there may be pallets - these are excellent blanks for assembling simple furniture.

Requirements for the quality of lumber

Chamber method of wood drying

The moisture content of lumber plays an important role in determining the quality of products, and this is not without reason, because a structure assembled from a damp board will dry out in the future. Therefore, in order to choose the most suitable board (timber or block), you should pay attention to the instructions of GOST 20850-84, where dry wood is considered a board with 12% moisture content, and the natural (street) state implies 15-20%.

Drying lumber naturally

In our case, both the first and second Gosstandart indicators are suitable, since such furniture is intended for use outdoors. But it will be quite normal if you purchase very dry boards - there are no components here that can be critically affected by the swelling of the lumber when wet.

It is important to pay attention to the presence of stains on the boards: if there are black stains, this indicates that the wood is infected with fungal mold. But if you see blue spots, you can be sure that the drying was carried out without ventilation and the board was steamed. The presence of blackness and blueness indicates an irreparable defect and such products should not be purchased. Also check the boards for cracks and knots - there shouldn’t be any of them on high-quality workpieces.

Tools for assembling a garden bench

Minimum set carpentry tools

We live in times of rapid development of technological progress, therefore, it is not at all necessary to use a minimum set of carpentry tools for work. That is, the purpose may remain the same, but the functionality and processing speed will certainly increase significantly!

What will be useful carpentry tools:

  • hand-held (stationary) circular saw and/or electric jigsaw;
  • electric drill and/or screwdriver;
  • a set of drills, bits and core cutters for wood;
  • hand router with a set of cutters (not always needed);
  • disk or tape grinding machine(not always needed);
  • chainsaw (for large workpieces such as timber or logs);
  • metalworker's wrenches (socket, socket, open-end);
  • an ax for working with logs;
  • tape measure, construction corner, level, pencil, paint brush.

Some options for making wooden benches

To make a garden bench with your own hands, of course, you will need drawings and photos of finished structures so that you can imagine the end result. All of the furniture examples below are assembled from wood with a small amount of metal fasteners.

There are average dimensions of such products, therefore, in order to create conditions for comfortable rest, the following indicators should be adhered to:

  1. bench seat height – 400-500 mm;
  2. bench seat width – 500-550 mm;
  3. bench and back length – 1000-1900 mm;
  4. back height – 350-500 mm;
  5. The width of the back is at your discretion.

Option No. 1 - a simple bench made of boards

Dimensional drawings

Sketch with names of parts: 1) front legs, 2) rear legs, 3) longitudinal drawers, 4) side drawers, 5) boards for the back and seat, 6) furniture dowel 80 mm long, 7) furniture dowel 40 mm long, 8 ) stiffness gussets

At this stage, after selecting the necessary materials and tools, you need to measure each workpiece to make sure that its dimensions are sufficient for the manufacture of a particular part. You probably understand that under constant loads, transverse joining of parts is extremely undesirable and even unsafe for a person under whom such furniture will break.

Joints of main lumber are possible only at the seat, if there is a central pair of legs there. For example, the bench will have 1990 mm and this length can be obtained by connecting two boards on the jumper of the central pair of legs. But for such an operation it is necessary that both fragments of the board be of the same thickness and width, then, perhaps, the joining seam, if properly processed, will not even be noticeable.

Now you need to cut all the parts from the blanks according to the dimensions indicated in the drawing, or according to your own parameters, since there may be other needs on the site of your dacha. All connections are made using dowels, self-tapping screws and bolts with nuts and washers (dowels, by the way, can also be replaced with self-tapping screws). But when choosing fasteners, you need to take into account the possible load on the bench. If children will use it, then the nodes can be fixed with self-tapping screws and/or nails, but for a more serious load it is better to use bolts with nuts and washers.

The assembly should begin with the frame, or rather with the legs, of which there will be two or three pairs, depending on the length of the bench, and if it is designed for two people (meter-long), then the third pair is not needed. I would like to draw your attention to the rigidity of the legs.

Usually it's two vertical boards or two beams - one to the top of the back, and the other to the bottom of the bench. There are also two jumpers: the lower one connects the posts in the middle of the short riser, and the upper one forms the basis for fastening the boards to the seat. To ensure that such an assembly never becomes loose, gussets should be screwed under the lower and/or upper jumper - these are triangles from the same profile from which the frame is made.

All components are marked in the order in which they were assembled

Step-by-step instructions for assembling all components (check the picture):

  • Frame molding. Two vertical posts (No. 1 and No. 2) are connected by transverse jumpers (No. 7).
  • Increased rigidity. After this, another pair of legs is assembled in the same way (or two more pairs, if the bench is designed for three points of support), strengthened and connected. To do this, additional transverse jumpers are used (No. 4 and No. 5), and all pairs are connected to each other by a longitudinal bar or board (No. 6).
  • Installation of seat and backrest. This operation will require polished bars or boards - they are fixed to the structure frame (No. 3).

Moisture protection

Treating wood with antiseptics and varnishes

If you want the bench on your site to last for many years, it needs to be treated with antiseptics and/or alkyd-urethane varnishes, which were mentioned in the section “Materials for assembling a garden bench.”

Video: Assembling a very simple bench with a backrest with your own hands

Option No. 2 – bench with a back made of logs

Thick boards and logs were used for production.

Today, people are increasingly looking back to the past and, in connection with this, styles such as Russian and English country or French. All this can be combined under a common name in the group “ rustic style" You can look at successful homemade products, photos of making garden benches from logs with your own hands are located at the top and bottom of this paragraph.

Log bench with log table

But how to make a bench so that it matches this design, because the interior has nothing to do with it - it’s the exterior. However, it is possible to adhere to this direction even on personal plot, especially since in unity with nature it should turn out very attractive. In this case, you can use not only logs, but also unedged board, you just need to get rid of the wane first.

But it is advisable to start from the base, that is, you should build an improvised one on the ground, since you are unlikely to be able to put such a bench indoors or under a canopy at the end of the summer season - it is too bulky and heavy. As a foundation, you can make shallow holes of 7-10 cm, pour a 5-8 cm layer of sand into it, compact it, and cover it with bricks on top (length 50-51 cm, for two bricks). Standard length or solid brick— 250 mm, width -120 mm, thickness -65 mm. This is quite enough to raise the structure a few centimeters above the ground, saving it from water, and no concrete is needed.

Drawing of a very simple, but very beautiful bench made of logs

Pay attention to the drawing located at the top - you see that the length of the bench is two and a half meters and can comfortably accommodate 5-6 people. Of course, for a 50 mm board this is too much load, but for half a log, where the radius is 100-150 mm, it is not at all difficult to withstand such a weight.

On the left is a scrap for the base, on the right is half a log for a bench

The legs, in the literal sense of the word, do not have to be assembled and installed here - their function will be performed by two blocks of wood installed on bricks (foundation) in horizontal position. To prevent such stands from rolling, you need to make the bottom flat, as shown in the drawing above, by cutting off part of the log with a chainsaw. In this case, you will need to calculate these stands so that they lie strictly horizontally and are at the same level with each other. Grooves are made on the blank for the bench, into which the rounded stands will then sit - this is also shown in the drawing.

Note. If you do not find thick enough logs to make the final seat height 40-50 cm, then you can attach thinner ones to the supports from thick logs. In the end, it may turn out even more attractive.

Now let's talk about the back - it can be straight or inclined, it all depends on how you install the thrust profiles - strictly vertically or at an angle. In the first case, two round timber ø80-100 mm will be suitable as thrust profiles - they will need to be screwed to horizontally lying logs that serve as legs and to half a log, that is, to the seat. To create structural rigidity, the lower parts of these racks are cut lengthwise to the height of the bench. For fixation, it is best to use not ordinary long self-tapping screws, but anchor bolts For example, for an anchor with a cross-section of 10 mm, mounting holes of ø6 mm are drilled, or for a cross-section of 12-14 mm, a hole with a diameter of 8-10 mm will be needed.

For an inclined back, a 40×70 or 50×100 mm board or ø100-120 mm round timber is used as racks. If it is still round timber, then in the places where it joins the supports (legs) and the bench you need to make cuts to create a plane for rigidity. But when using a 40x70 mm board, you can even use a router to select grooves in horizontally lying logs in order to hammer these stops into them. The groove must be coated with wood glue or PVA, and the board must be screwed to the bench.

The backrest, both on strictly vertical and inclined stops, is fixed according to the same principle as the seat - seating grooves are selected in half of the log, and, having coated them with glue, they are screwed on with self-tapping screws. Upon completion of assembly, the structure is treated with an antiseptic and/or water-repellent paint and varnish materials type alkyd-urethane varnishes. Below is a video where the master tells how he made a bench from logs.

Option No. 3 – semicircular bench in the garden

Semicircular bench in the garden

You may think that this complex design and its independent construction is beyond your power, but this is only at first glance. It is noteworthy that in this case, for such a design you will need a fairly uniform material, this is a board 40x70 mm, 50x100 mm and timber 100x100 mm. And, of course, fastening materials.

Assembling a semicircular frame for the seat

The top photo shows how the frame is assembled and it is very simple: first, cut five pieces of boards of the same length, for example, one meter long. Then, from four pieces, assemble two small meter-long frames using jumpers 40-45 cm long (three jumpers for each frame). Then another frame will have to be assembled between them in the middle, joining the side boards at an angle. Here it is advisable to use a 50×100 mm board, and fasten it with self-tapping screws.

In total you will need 4 pairs of legs (8 pieces)

If we take into account that the generally accepted height of a bench installed in the garden is about 40-50 cm, then for the legs you will have to cut eight fragments of timber 400-450 mm long.

The legs are screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws

The legs are screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws, but in order for the beam in the upper part to be flush with the frame, a board is placed for leveling, as shown in the photo.

When all the legs are screwed on, proceed to installing the seat.

When all the legs are screwed on, the frame is turned over to its normal position and the seat installation begins. Please note that the sheathing begins from the outer edge of the middle frame in order to set the direction of the 40x70 mm boards. To avoid fiddling around for a long time, you can screw several boards at once and cut off the excess with a circular saw right at the installation site. But you can also put a mark on each board by drawing a pencil from below. It is advisable to leave a small blockage between the boards - it will be more beautiful.

Supports under the backrest are attached to the legs and frame

Attaching the backrest to the supports

The supports for the backrest are first attached to the legs (to the side of the beam), and then to the frame using reinforced steel corners. When all the inclined stops are set, one or two 40x70 mm boards are screwed to them along the top as a backrest. Upon completion of assembly, the structure is treated with an antiseptic and/or paints and varnishes.

Option No. 4 – garden bench with a back made from old pallets

Corner garden bench made from old pallets

Straight garden bench made from old pallets

I think that in order to get such a garden bench with a back, no drawings are needed. Here the usual block assembly takes place using self-tapping screws, where the size of the structure depends on the geometric parameters of the block.

Standard pallet 1000×1200 mm

There are two types of pallets, ours (produced in the countries of the former USSR) and European ones. Our standard perimeter is 1000×1200 mm, and for Euro pallets it is 800×1200 mm. But those experts who have been making furniture from such materials for a long time recommend European stands, since the boards on them are planed, therefore, less time is spent on polishing.

Soft garden corner made from old pallets

You can even arrange a rest in the garden on soft benches; for this, the structure is temporarily covered with pillows, which can always be removed in case of bad weather.

Wood processing in this case is no different from other options, that is, it is coated with an antiseptic and/or paints and varnishes.

Conclusion

If you want, you can choose one of four options for making a garden bench with a back, made by yourself. You can also use the drawings given in the article, but if necessary, change the dimensions in accordance with specific needs, that is, focusing on the conditions of the site.

Benches and benches in the country house and in the garden are primarily a place of relaxation. But just putting up a bench is not interesting. After all, you can create a beautiful corner. To not just relax, but to enjoy nature and the fruits of your labor. There are many interesting ideas. Moreover, the most simple designs such that these benches can be made with their own hands by any person whose arms grow from their shoulders.

Photos of original benches (ideas for cottages and gardens)

Everyone knows what ordinary benches look like—they’ve seen them more than once. But I don’t want the usual one - the simplest one. Especially if you have already started the process of decorating the site or are just planning it. Why not start from the bench? And then other decorations will follow. You just have to start.

In the garden or near the house I want to have more greenery: beautiful and different flowers. - that's good, but why not combine them with a bench.

What could be simpler? Two wooden boxes in which flowers are planted and between them a couple of planed and sanded boards. This bench can be placed near the wall, and a couple of long boards can be placed on the wall to create a backrest.

Not everyone likes flower beds made of wood: wood requires maintenance, and without it it quickly loses its appearance. It is especially difficult to care for a tree that is in contact with the soil. Instead of wooden boxes there may be, for example, stone or concrete pedestals.

It’s very easy to make such a bench at the dacha with your own hands. You can find ready-made concrete flower beds or do something similar. You can buy a processed board, or you can do it yourself. Instead of a board, there can be half a log - depending on the style of the site. It is easier to secure the seat using metal corner. It is attached to concrete using dowels, to wood - with self-tapping screws from below or through bolts.

If anyone has large plants in durable flowerpots, you can implement the following idea. In this option, the bench covers the plants. To avoid surprises, flowerpots must be very durable...

There is a similar version of a bench made of boards and without plants: it may need to be placed on or in. The supports are made of boards of the same size, and the seat is made of timber.

Bench made of boards - a non-standard option

And more variations on the same theme: hollow ones are used as support building blocks. Treated bars are inserted into the holes. This is the seat of the bench. Just round the edges of the beam, or it will be uncomfortable to sit.

For this garden bench, it is advisable to find large blocks with thick walls. If not, you need to securely fasten the blocks to one another. The whole task is to first secure the blocks (for example, with pins), and then attach the bars to them (with bolts or dowels).

Log benches

If your site is decorated in a rustic or ethno style, the standard approach will not suit you. It is best to use logs in this case - with or without bark - it’s your choice.

The seat for the bench is made of logs - a trunk of large or medium diameter sawn lengthwise. The back is either a smaller diameter trunk, or simply a cut closer to the edge. The legs can also be made from narrow pieces of logs (look at the photo below).

Log bench - quick and easy

The legs and seats are connected to each other with metal pins: a hole of slightly smaller diameter is drilled in both parts for the pin. The pin is driven into one of them, the second part is pushed in and is also driven in, but this time they hit the wood rather than the pin. To avoid leaving traces, lay a piece of unnecessary board and hit it with a hammer (or sledgehammer). Such a connection should be quite reliable, but to be sure, you can install two or three pins, or you can cut a little log, making a flat area of the same size on both parts being connected. By increasing the support area, you will increase the reliability of the seat fastening: after all, the log weighs a lot.

Bench option without backrest

Another interesting option in the “ethno” style is shown in the photo above. It is made in stone, but this bench can also be made from logs. The seat is a very thick board, the legs are a large part of a large diameter deck. A groove is cut in the deck for laying the seat. If you have a tool (you can make a cut with an axe, grinder or chainsaw), it’s easy to do.

Often in the countryside a work desk is needed. From a log you can make not only a bench, but also a table. A version of such an ensemble is shown in the photo. Only the tabletop is made of boards, all other parts are logs different diameters or from half.

A greater degree of processing is inherent in the next bench in the same style. The back, legs, and armrests are made of thick and not very thick branches, the seat is made of sanded and treated (barked and sanded) unedged boards.

The other bench was made almost the same way. Only the boards and branches are located in a different direction and the result is a different look. A DIY bench of this type does not require much skill. In this case, the more careless the work, the more decorative the result.

Wicker back - not often seen

You can make a rest area and a bench around the tree. The designs are simple, making the flooring is generally easy.

You can also supplement your recreation group. And above the bench you can put it - this is the “progenitor” of the usual arch - one of the types of light gazebo. And to make the relaxation completely complete, you can do, or.

Made of metal and wood

Few people will install completely metal benches in their dacha. They, of course, can be very beautiful, but in the summer they heat up to incredible temperatures, and when it gets a little colder, you can’t sit on them because they are too cold. Benches made of metal and wood do not have these disadvantages. Legs and load-bearing structure made of metal, and the seat and back (if any) are made of wood. Moreover, there are also interesting shops in modern design.

Rectangles are welded from the profile, jumpers are welded to the side walls, on which the seat boards rest. Simple, stylish, reliable, functional.

In a more advanced form - with armrests, a backrest, soft cushions on the seat, such a design may look like in the photo. The wide seat turns the bench into a sofa, and cushions - fabric-covered furniture foam - add comfort. The tables are made in the same style - a frame made of corrugated pipe and a table top made of boards.

One important point: if you make a seat or tabletop from several adjacent elements, they do not need to be butted end to end. There should be a gap of 3-4 mm between adjacent boards/bars. The wood swells and shrinks. In order for the surface to remain relatively flat during these processes, a gap is necessary.

If smoother lines are needed - for families with children - you can bend the pipes and make garden benches and a table with rounded edges. This garden furniture is completely safe. An ordinary round or corrugated pipe is bent, leaving the sides in the shape of the letter “P” with a wide back. The length of this backrest is the length of the bench. For the table, the dimensions are made a little larger: the legs and back are longer.

Make two identical blanks for the table and bench. Next, cut the boards to equal lengths. For the seat, about 40 cm, for the tabletop, at least 55 cm. They are fastened to the pipes with furniture bolts with a flat head. To prevent the caps from sticking out, drill a hole of a slightly larger diameter under them.

Benches made of boards

The largest group is benches and benches made of boards. There are designs that are more reminiscent of sofas, especially if you put soft pillows on them - and you can lie down.

Garden furniture in modern style It’s easy to assemble: rectangles with partitions made of thinner boards, connected to each other.

Even the usual design of a country bench can become exclusive if you approach it with imagination: instead of legs and armrests, wooden wheels. The result is a designer item.

A bench made of boards with a back and wheels instead of sides - looks interesting

And the simplest possible is a board with legs in the shape of the letter “X”. Such shops were built centuries ago, and you can still see them today.

From the boards you can make a bench in a modern style: in the shape of the letter “P”. With this design, the main task is to ensure rigid fixation of the legs and seat: the pushing forces are not compensated for in any way. In this case, it is important to take a thick board or timber so that it does not sag. You can place the board “on edge”: this way the rigidity will be greater. To increase reliability, you can install corners from below.

The photo shows an option with a 45° cut. Having a miter box or circular saw Accurate cutting is easy to achieve. By accurately joining the workpieces and fastening them, we obtain an angle of 90°. If the seat does not sag, it will last a long time...

Interesting and reliable option The benches are shown in the photo below. The legs are assembled from boards of different lengths: each second is shorter by the width of the board for the seat. Interesting idea. It is easy to make such a bench: it is important to maintain the dimensions, and everything is connected very simply: with nails into the face of the seat.

Original benches

It seems like there’s more that can be thought of... but it turns out there’s a lot. For example, attach the seat to a large stone.

Make a structure from bamboo trunks.

Or a stone.

Sitting in winter will be unpleasant, but beautiful...

How to make a bench: photo reports

We won’t make benches out of stone—not everyone has the equipment, but we can make them out of different pieces of wood. Let's talk about making simple but unusual designs. So that a handmade bench can be a source of pride.

Bench without back

The design is simple, but looks interesting due to the specific material. For the legs, timber with rounded edges was used. If you have logs small size, you can trim them on the sides. You'll get almost the same effect. THIS material is not so rare; the legs are assembled from it in an unusual way: the bars are laid flat on top of each other. This adds zest and appeal.

This bench without a back has a length of about 120 cm, a width of about 45 cm, and a height of 38 cm. You can round the edges of the beam using a cutter, or you can find a similar profiled one. It costs more, but it will be easier to work with: it is already well processed and is easy to connect.

Depending on the found cross-section of the timber, calculate the length you will need. Determine how many bars will have to be stacked on top of each other to achieve the required height. In this case, 5 bars were used for one leg. Total 45 cm * 5 pieces - 2.25 m. Two legs required 4.5 m of timber. The seat used a board 40 mm thick and 90 mm wide. For the seat you need 5 boards 1.5 meters long. It turned out 1.2 m * 5 pieces = 6 m.

First we cut and process the boards for the seat. Their edges must be rounded. If not grinder or a router, you will have to work with sandpaper, but you can find such a board or arrange at a sawmill to have it processed and sanded for you: it will be much less work. So, we cut the boards to the same length, sand them and varnish them (with or without tinting - your choice).

Place the bars for the legs one next to the other, aligning their edges. Using a square and a pencil, draw lines where the fasteners will be placed. The distance between the lines is 7-10 cm.

You can take metal pins, or you can make pins - carved from wood. Holes slightly smaller in diameter are drilled for them; the depth of the hole is half the length of the pin. Then they are hammered into one part, and a second part is inserted into the same hole on top. The connection is reliable, but to be sure, you can add glue, although then the structure will turn out to be one-piece.

With a pin connection, the main task is to make the holes strictly one above the other so that the parts mounted on the pin give a smooth edge. We've done part of the work - we've drawn lines where we'll drill, now we need to measure the same distance from the edge. For this we will create a template. We take a piece of plank about 1.5 cm wide. We will drill holes at this distance from the edge of the bars. Having placed it exactly along the edge, we mark the places of intersection with the drawn perpendicular lines.

We will install the pins in checkerboard pattern, therefore we will drill holes through one intersection. We also make holes on one block from different sides in a checkerboard pattern. In a similar way, using pins, the legs are connected to the seat: two pins for each plank.

Technologically, this type of connection is correct, but it is complex and requires a certain skill. It could be easier. Place all the bars one on top of the other, secure with clamps, drill through in two or three sets - in the center and along the edges, connect with a long pin, with washers placed under the head and nut. You can nail the seat strip legs to the legs assembled in this way with nails from above or try to make a pin connection.

The bench was made by hand. Finishing work remains

If you nailed the seat, take some wood mastic suitable color, add some very fine sawdust and stir. Apply this mixture to the joints. When dry, smooth it with sandpaper. Sand all parts smooth and coat with varnish or wood paints for exterior use (preferably not covering ones, but those that leave the wood texture visible).

Read how and with what you can paint wood. It talks about lining, but the painting techniques remain the same, and the compositions must be taken for external use.

DIY bench made from broken chairs

In any household you can find two old chairs. They should be the same and still strong enough. We disassemble the chairs, leaving the part with the back and legs. We connect the two backs using bars of a suitable cross-section.

For greater rigidity at the bottom, at a distance of about 20 cm from the floor, where previously the chairs also had jumpers, we make another frame with transverse crossbars. It can be used as a footstool or to store some things.

After sanding, we paint the resulting structure. This time the paint should be normal: different breeds Wood can only be painted with covering paints. Apply with a brush or from a spray can.

All that's left to do is cut the seat to size from thick plywood (8-10 mm thick) and cover it with foam rubber and fabric.

Garden chair/bench made from pallets

Everything is useful on the farm. You can even make it from cargo pallets garden furniture. Moreover, there is no need to disassemble them: we use one for a seat, and from the second we will make a backrest. You will only need well-processed planks for the armrests and bars for the legs.

In one of the pallets we strengthen the fastening points by inserting pieces of bars. Having inserted it, fasten it with self-tapping screws on one side and the other.

From a timber with a cross-section of at least 100*100 mm, we cut four identical sections 80 cm long. We screw them in those places that we have just reinforced. We leave 20-25 cm on the legs. We fasten with four long screws - 150 mm and no shorter.

It is important to maintain verticality and leave the same distance on the legs. Then the seat will be level. If there are errors in height, you can try to file it down, but then you will have to cut it from the top too - so that the armrests are even. So try to screw it straight. Deviations from the vertical can only be dealt with by screwing the leg back on.

We attach a second pallet to the rear posts, and boards for armrests on the sides.

All that remains is to cut a piece of furniture foam rubber and cover it with fabric. You can also make pillows for the back. If you are not going to process everything thoroughly, but make a loft-style chair, use sandpaper or a sander, sanding all surfaces until smooth. You can coat it with paint, giving the wood a dark color.

Drawings of wooden benches

Video lessons

Several videos on how to make benches with your own hands.

A bench made of wood is one of the oldest items furniture that has been used by humans. Previously, in order to create a comfortable bench it was enough to take an ordinary wooden driftwood, carefully trim it with a stone ax and it’s ready. It was she who became the great-great-grandfather modern furniture, in particular wooden benches, which are relevant and in demand to this day. It is the bench that can become a sought-after element, both in the house and in the surrounding area of the dacha.

Style

At first glance it seems that the bench is not important element landscape design, however, this is absolutely not the case. Experts confirm the fact that it starts from the bench garden design and that’s where it ends. After all, why then such a rich variety of choice and why come up with original, bizarrely shaped benches if they are not so important and no one can enjoy them?

It is because of its importance that you need to pay a little attention to the placement of the piece of furniture. It is best to install it where the most beautiful and charming view opens up, and the bench itself should become an elegant accent that complements the perfect beauty of the country garden.

A comfortable bench in the garden of a summer cottage can become exactly the place where you can retire, break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, relax and take a slight breath, just enjoy the view of nature, feel unity with it. For complete enjoyment you can read good book, listen to quiet and calm music, or simply go on a mental journey. In addition to aesthetic use, functional use is also possible, because a bench is primarily a piece of furniture, as well as a “weapon” that can be used to zone the adjacent area.

A garden bench for a summer residence has a number of functional purposes, namely:

  • Front door - installed at the porch of the house, near the entrance. It is a wooden bench with decorative ornaments, hand carvings, and can be used as a place for a photo shoot.
  • Dining room - placed near the grill or barbecue, on the terrace or in any other place where the family prefers to dine outdoors.
  • Garden - a small bench that is installed near flower beds, flower beds or in areas where you can sit down and relax a little while carrying out land work in the garden of a summer cottage. Often these are simple benches without any decorative ornaments or unnecessary frills.
  • Relaxation - often such benches are “hidden” somewhere in the quietest and most secluded corner of a summer cottage, away from anyone’s eyes. This place should be the quietest and most comfortable so that you can enjoy your holiday fresh air. The main requirement for such a bench is comfort; in addition, it can be of impressive size so that you can not only sit down, but also lie down.

Optimal dimensions for a bench that will be placed on the territory of a summer cottage:

  • The height is about half a meter, the legs will reach the ground, but not rest too much, which means they can rest.
  • The width of the seat is 50-55 cm, in addition, you can tilt it by 10-15 degrees to make it more comfortable to lean on and seem to “fall” inside.
  • The height of the backrest is from 30 cm, but no more than half a meter; it is best to place it at an angle of 15-45 degrees, so that you can lean on it and lie down slightly on it.
  • Armrests (if installed) should be located at a height of 15-29 cm from the seat.

The best material for making benches is wood, the most resistant to moisture and decay - larch, cherry, hazel and oak. The most the best option is teak, which contains natural resins in its species that protect the piece of furniture from rot and various insects that destroy wood species.

The shape and appearance of the bench depends only on the whim and imagination of the person who will create it. By taking up the construction of a bench, you can personally bring all your ideas to life. If Country style was chosen, then the shape of the bench should be as simple as possible, and the color brown or natural. If you build a bench in the Provence style, you will have to make an antique bench, and then paint it white or blue (blue, purple, blue).

If the dacha has a tendency oriental style and the bench must correspond to this, then it can be made of bamboo. In general, near wooden dachas Benches should be installed from a similar type of wood.

Making a bench

Often, a bench is made from wooden blocks, slats or boards as they are easy to manufacture and have a long service life. The approximate parameters of the bench are indicated above; the length of the bench depends on desire and possibility. It is important to note that the slats cannot be placed closely, as they may begin to rot due to stagnation of rainwater. It is necessary either to place the slats at a short distance, or to use one continuous wide board.

In order to create an original bench, it is not necessary to spend money on expensive materials, because a masterpiece can be created even from branches and roots. Having processed it correctly natural wood, pallets and fallen wooden tables you can create an unusual and interesting bench with natural shapes.

The most elementary example of an ascetic bench is the “Monastery” bench, which is made from wood sawn along the trunk and mounted on two round supports. The support is made from small cuttings of a small diameter trunk.

Garden bench care

High humidity is main problem for wooden benches, so it is best to use mobile type benches, which are winter period Can be brought into a barn or house. It is also best to install the bench on special pads made of rubber or brick in order to prevent ground moisture from entering the wood.

  • Regular painting (varnish) is required. It is best to do painting in the spring, first clean the bench of previous paint.
  • During hot weather, it should be placed in the shade, since constant direct rays of the sun harm the quality of the tree.
  • If rot appears on one of the boards, it urgently needs to be replaced to avoid the problem spreading.
  • It is necessary to regularly check the fasteners (screws, nails and bolts); if necessary, they must be secured (tightened) so that the structure does not become loose.
