Fiberglass is nonwoven fabric made of fiberglass, outwardly resembling a thin "blotter". It is produced by pressing, not by weaving fibers. By itself, it does not have strength, it is easily torn, but after gluing to the surface, subject to strict adherence to technology, it forms a reinforcing coating that is very resistant to deformation effects.

Fiberglass is sold in rolls of 45-50 meters with a width of 1 meter, and may differ in density. It has a front and back side, which must be taken into account during installation.

The price of the material is low, depending on the density, a roll can cost from 300 to 1000 rubles. This is not something worth saving on, since repeated repairs as a result of the appearance of cracks will cost much more.

Auxiliary materials and tools

Of course, the fiberglass itself will not stick to the wall, for this you need special glue and a standard set of tools:

  • Glue sometimes comes with fiberglass. If this is not the case, buy glass wallpaper glue - no other, including PVA or a compound for heavy wallpaper, does not fit;

Note. counting required amount glue, multiply the consumption declared for glass fiber by 1.5-2, since fiberglass has a high absorbency. In addition, the instruction requires that already glued canvases be smeared with adhesive on top.

Preparing walls for reinforcement

Before gluing fiberglass to a wall or ceiling, the surface must be leveled with putty (see Leveling walls with putty according to all the rules). This stage can be skipped only if it has already been puttied earlier, the coating is even, durable.

The presence of small cracks with a thickness of not more than 1 mm is allowed.

  • Large cracks on the plastered surface are embroidered and sealed in several stages with putty or a special joint compound;
  • Joints between drywall sheets (see How to putty drywall joints according to technology) and other sheet facing materials, as well as the places of their attachment to the frame, are also puttied, and the seams are necessarily reinforced with sickle;

  • After the “patches” have dried, the entire surface is leveled with putty and polished until a flat plane is obtained;

What is fiberglass for painting, not everyone knows: this innovative finishing material appeared on the market relatively recently and is actively gaining popularity due to its valuable properties. Like other types of modern materials, painting fiberglass gossamer gives previously inaccessible advantages in the process finishing works.

Scope of material

What it is? Fiberglass is a non-woven fabric obtained by pressing and consisting of the smallest glass fibers. This is a thin translucent material, therefore, in professional jargon, fiberglass painting is often called a gossamer.

Why do you need painting fiberglass? It allows you to guaranteed to avoid visible damage to the walls and ceiling. The appearance of cracks on surfaces covered with plaster and putty is not always associated with the unprofessionalism of the workers who performed the repair. Cracking is due to the physical properties of traditional building materials which, under the influence of dry air, shrink over time.

Another reason for the appearance of cracks is the constant vibration characteristic of houses located next to a highway or railway. Due to the appearance of cracks, it used to be often updated decorative coating.

The use of fiberglass allows you to get perfectly smooth, durable and not subject to cracking walls and ceilings.

Painting fiberglass is a light fibrous material obtained from natural raw materials, which is quartz sand.

The gossamer fiberglass is supplied in rolls, the length of the web is 50 m, the width is 1 m.

The density of fiberglass varies from 25 to 50 g/m 2 .


For walls, it is better to choose fiberglass of a higher density, and for a ceiling - less.

Application of the material is possible at temperatures from - 40 to + 60 ° C, which makes it suitable for any climatic conditions.

The web is breathable and hygienic: it does not electrify, does not accumulate dust, withstands wet cleaning, mold and fungus do not form on it. The material does not release into the air harmful substances and does not support combustion. All this, coupled with resistance to mechanical damage and the possibility of quick application gives the gossamer an advantage over other types of finishing materials.

Precautionary measures

Fiberglass gossamer forms a hard wear-resistant coating on the wall that can be washed, but it acquires these qualities only in combination with glue. Before talking about getting on the walls, you should take care of the precautions.

The material not yet glued is fragile enough, and its small particles can get into the respiratory tract. Once on the skin and mucous membranes, glass fibers cause irritation, so it is imperative to use a respirator, goggles and overalls when working.

It is possible to glue the cobweb only at a certain temperature (from + 15 to + 25 ° C) and air humidity not more than 60%. During the execution of work, drafts are unacceptable; it is required to exclude direct sun rays.


How to glue fiberglass? It is necessary that the walls are pre-aligned and puttied. Before gluing, it is necessary to carefully putty and reinforce the seams between the plates and further ensure that they do not coincide with the boundaries of the glass sheets. Fiberglass is glued to the putty only after applying a deep penetration primer, which will avoid overspending of the adhesive.

The technology assumes that the cobweb can only be glued with special compounds that do not contain starch, for example, Bostic, Oscar, Wellton adhesives produced by fiberglass manufacturers. The same compositions

Sticking rules

You need to stick the material as follows:

  • cut the material into strips, according to the height of the walls with an allowance of up to 10 cm;
  • according to the instructions, prepare a solution from dry matter - the preparation time should not exceed 15 minutes (the finished solution is also sold, but it is much more expensive);
  • evenly, without gaps, apply glue to the wall or ceiling - you need to cover the area with glue a little more than the width of the first canvas;
  • strictly vertically, pressing with a roller or a flexible plastic spatula, glue the first canvas, - gluing starts from the corner closest to the window, the canvas is back to back;
  • apply the next portion of glue and overlap the second canvas - in order for the paint to look even, the pile on the canvases should be directed in one direction;
  • cut off the excess under the ceiling, above the floor and exactly along the joint with a clerical knife (to make it even, it is convenient to press a wide spatula to the borders and cut along its edge);
  • cover the pasted canvases with glue on top - you need to stop when the color becomes uniform.

It is important that the room remains closed until the adhesive has dried completely. A draft can completely destroy the results of the work, causing peeling of the canvases.

How to prepare fiberglass for painting

Masters are often interested in questions: is it necessary to prime fiberglass, and is it necessary to putty fiberglass and why is this done? It is not necessary to prime the coating before or painting, because the walls have already been primed before gluing it. In addition, the adhesive acts as a primer.

The question of whether puttying is necessary does not have a definite answer. Fiberglass has a beautiful texture, which is sometimes preferable to keep, but the paint consumption will be very high and at least 4-5 layers will be required. The paint will make the joints noticeable: even if they are made perfectly, their very presence will by no means decorate the room. Puttying fiberglass before painting is better for another reason: small fibers can get into the air, which is harmful to health, and putty completely excludes their penetration.

What to putty? There is no special putty on fiberglass, you can use any finishing mixture on a gypsum or polymer base, the main thing is that it be of good quality.

How to putty painting fiberglass? The technology has some features:

  • by the time the putty is applied, the glue must be completely dry;
  • if the coating was pasted a few days ago, it must be cleaned of dust;
  • the adjacent surface is protected with masking tape;
  • putty is applied in two layers with an interval of a day;
  • the thickness of the first layer should not exceed 2 mm;
  • the second layer should be just as thin and completely overlap the first;
  • after drying, the putty is polished with a bar with sandpaper with a grain size of not more than P150.

Puttying fiberglass allows you to get a perfectly flat, durable surface.

Fiberglass painting

How to paint fiberglass? If it is decided to paint fiberglass without prior puttying, no priming is required, but its texture will be visible even under many layers of paint. And yet, painted walls or ceilings will have a more attractive appearance if they were previously puttied; in this case, a primer must be applied. To paint the walls, it is better to choose paints on water based that fit well and are easy to use.


Fiberglass painting is carried out using the same technology as painting other materials.

The paint is applied with a roller until there are no uneven tone areas on the painted surface.

Is it possible on fiberglass? Yes, because this material is not finished. Fiberglass for wallpaper is a common finishing option, but the surface must be puttied and primed before final finishing.

Fiberglass is rarely used as a decorative coating, but as a reinforcing material it is indispensable. Its application will allow you to achieve a perfectly smooth surface, and redecorating won't take much longer.

In terms of structure, fiberglass is a non-woven fabric made of fiberglass filaments, which are pressed, like paper, onto special equipment. They look the same - smooth and thin, but, unlike paper, they are not afraid of water, do not burn in fire, do not accumulate dust, and are resistant to most chemicals. Density from 25 g/sq.m. (similar to office paper) up to 50 g/sq.m.

Fiberglass is an absolutely eco-friendly and hypoallergenic material. It contains only natural substances: quartz sand, lime, soda and dolomite. The surface of the canvas allows steam and air to pass through, unlike vinyl, and will not start under it. Additional benefits:

  • reinforces walls and ceilings, prevents cracks,
  • withstands most household mechanical damage (furniture, hands and toys),
  • it holds screws and other fasteners well,
  • does not burn (withstands temperatures up to 1300 degrees) and does not emit toxic substances,
  • it can be washed, including with means household chemicals brushing.

Unlike glass fiber, fiberglass does not have a relief, its surface is smooth and exceptionally suitable for painting. After sticker and painting, it looks like a perfectly leveled and plastered wall, but the cost of creating such a coating is much lower. This material can be glued on both concrete and drywall, brick, even sandwich panel partitions.

Fiberglass - great choice for new buildings, which will still shrink for several years. They can paste over not only walls, but also the ceiling, and door and window slopes.

What will be required

In order to stick fiberglass on walls or ceilings, you will need a minimum of materials.

  1. Special glue is needed - Glufix 99, Wellton, Holtex or Oskar, the latter is more common.
  2. Primer, for example the same Oskar, latex-based. You can also use slightly diluted glue (2 parts water to 1 part glue).
  3. A short-haired roller for applying glue and a shallow paint tray, for working in corners - a flat, narrow brush.
  4. A sturdy utility knife and a plastic spatula for trimming the edges.
  5. Water-based paint with latex, through which the walls can "breathe".

Also, do not do without a partner. One person should glue the panel at the top, and the second should align it and glue it from below.

When choosing fiberglass in a store, you need to look at its edge: it should be even and not disheveled.

Preparation: easy

If there was already a decorative coating on the wall before, it must be removed: both wallpaper, and falling off plaster, and layers oil paint. An exception can be made for firmly adhering plaster with minor damage - chips, cracks and traces of furniture.

Before sticking the wall, it is still better to level and putty large cracks and chips, it is possible not as carefully as before painting or plastering. Small irregularities and depressions are allowed. The wall or ceiling is swept with a stiff brush from dust, if any. greasy spots removed with a solvent. Then or diluted glue.

Fiberglass is sold in rolls, standard width which are 100 cm, but the length can vary - 10, 20 and 50 m. First, it must be cut into panels of the required length, adding a few centimeters in reserve. It is better to cut a piece later than to find out that literally a few millimeters were not enough.

Sticking fiberglass on walls

Fiberglass is glued, as are non-woven and glass wallpapers. It is not the cloth that is smeared with glue, but the wall itself, the area is a couple of centimeters wider than the wallpaper. The cut panels are glued end-to-end, starting from the top corner and making sure that they go strictly vertically. The seam and the canvas itself are additionally smoothed and pressed with a spatula, the excess from the bottom is cut off with a clerical knife.

If the edges of the roll are still damaged during storage, or you need to paste over small plot complex shape, then adjacent pieces can be overlapped so that the disheveled areas completely overlap. In this case, the joint is not sealed, but is immediately cut in the middle with a clerical knife. The upper strip with the edge is removed, gently lifting the edge of the panel, a piece is removed from the bottom. It is important to make an even cut to the base, then the seam will be invisible. The seam is smoothed with a spatula, if necessary, you can add a little glue under the panels, removing its remnants with a paper towel.

The glued fiberglass is treated with a primer or, again, with highly diluted glue and left for 12 or more hours to dry. Such processing will significantly reduce the amount of paint that will be required for staining in the future. Fiberglass is not as sensitive to temperature changes and drafts as wallpaper, but windows are best left closed. When it is completely dry and adheres well to the surface of the wall, you can start painting. You can repaint this coating many times, it will not deform or deteriorate from this.

The adhesive is applied directly to the wall. The canvas is cut off, which has a margin of about eight centimeters and is glued in a vertical direction. It is advisable to use a plumb line to mark the place where the pasting will be carried out. Gluing subsequent fibers is similar to wallpapering, they are joined to each other. Use a rubber roller or spatula to smooth out any unevenness. Excess fiberglass is cut off with a mounting knife. When the glue is completely dry, and this takes from one to two days, proceed to the staining process.

Due to the fact that fiberglass has a fibrous structure, much more paint is required. To avoid this, you should putty the surface again, but with fiberglass. The consistency of the putty should be liquid, and the application is carried out with a rubber spatula. Putty, as it were rubbed into fiberglass. This procedure is carried out carefully and slowly so that there are no minor errors, since staining will be carried out after it.

The advantage of using fiberglass is that in the process wet cleaning, when using high quality paint, the surface does not lose its original appearance for many years. Therefore, this material is indispensable in the process of finishing the kitchen or children's room. Also, fiberglass does not burn, perfectly passes air, has antiseptic properties, and most importantly, it is completely safe.

How to glue fiberglass on the ceiling

Before proceeding to the direct gluing of fiberglass to the ceiling, it must first be prepared for this process. Preparatory stage work includes the following:

1. Remove old plaster, paint, lime or wallpaper from the ceiling. For these purposes, use a spatula. To remove old wallpaper, you need to pre-soak them with water and wait half an hour.

2. If the ceiling is covered with lime mortar, especially if there are several layers of this material on it, it is recommended to clean it with a spatula. So, as the adhesion between the fiberglass and the ceiling will be very weak.

Tip: If the lime ceiling is difficult to clean with a spatula, another treatment option is possible. Using a brush or roller, wet it with water and wash it with a woolen cloth several times.

3. After cleaning, you should begin to close up small cracks and depressions that formed during the cleaning of the surface. Before that, it is recommended to walk along the ceiling with a roller with a primer.

4. It is possible to glue wallpaper directly on such a ceiling, but it is better if the entire surface is plastered.

5. When gluing fiberglass onto a plasterboard ceiling, you must first seal all joints and caps of self-tapping screws and make the surface perfectly flat. Before proceeding to the next step, the putty must be completely dry.

6. If fiberglass is glued to a layer of insulation, for example, extraction polystyrene foam, then surface preparation also includes puttying all joints and dowels with which it is attached to the ceiling.

How to glue fiberglass video:

The process of gluing fiberglass includes:

1. Pre-cutting the sheets to be glued into pieces. To easily join the sheets together, leave one centimeter of stock on each segment.

2. Decide on the place for gluing the first sheet, using a level and a pencil, draw its location. Better yet, make a complete markup, according to which gluing will be performed.

3. Pour glue into the bath and apply with a roller to the surface of the ceiling. Apply such a strip so that it is slightly larger than the area on which the fiberglass is glued. In awkward areas, such as corners or near a chandelier, apply the adhesive with a brush.

4. Then attach the cut piece of fiberglass to the ceiling and level with a rubber spatula. Do not press the edges too hard to easily join them with the next sheet.

5. The second sheet is glued in the same way, the joint is wiped with a dry cloth, and processed with a wallpaper spatula.

6. After gluing all the fiberglass sheets, there should be no drafts in the room. This action will allow it to dry faster and stick to the surface more firmly.

Painting fiberglass - features of gluing on walls

The procedure for gluing painting fiberglass on the walls begins with their preparation and complete cleaning. Then the walls are leveled and covered with this material.

Consider the phased application of fiberglass:

  • apply a rough starting putty to the surface of the walls;
  • wait for it to dry completely and treat with a deep penetration primer;
  • after the primer has dried, apply glue with a roller;
  • start gluing the first sheet from the corner;
  • to improve the reinforcement of the surface, iron along the edges of the fiberglass with a roller;
  • give Special attention joining two sheets - apply one sheet to the other with a gap, and then use a mounting knife to cut the joint and remove excess fiberglass;
  • the joint must be smoothed with a spatula;
  • when the wall is completely dry, you need to cover the wall with finishing putty;
  • after it dries, treat the wall with an abrasive mesh;
  • apply a primer and start decorating the surface.

Tip: apply glue about one millimeter thick so that it saturates the wall and evenly spreads over the surface.

If the fiberglass is glued with high quality and correctly, the walls seem perfectly even. It is an excellent basis for finishing with decorative plaster. Subject to all technologies, cracks, fungus and mold will not appear on the walls.

Painting fiberglass painting

It is possible to use unpainted fiberglass, as this material looks very aesthetically pleasing. But, if you need to paint the walls, fiberglass is an excellent material, which, in addition to providing a perfectly flat surface, also increases the adhesion of the paint and the wall.

Advantages of using fiberglass for painting:

  • if you need to drive a nail into the wall, the plaster will not pour out of the hole;
  • complete absence of cracks.

If fiberglass is used, which is intended for further painting, it is recommended to use water-based paints. Thus, the material will not lose its properties, and after a while it is possible to repeat the staining procedure.

Among the choice of paint tone, it is better to give preference to semi-gloss. The question of direct puttying of fiberglass depends on what type of finish will be used next. If desired, in coloring and obtaining a smooth surface, the fiberglass must be puttied, otherwise it must be immediately covered with paint.

To save on paint consumption, it is cheaper to first cover the fiberglass with a layer of ordinary glue, and then paint it.

In the process of staining is used:

  • roller,
  • brushes,
  • winglet,
  • bath.

The minimum number of layers is two. The interval between them is twelve hours.

The wing is used for rolling seams, as the roller is not able to evenly color this part.

2. Be sure to determine the front side of the fiberglass, as it practically does not differ from the wrong side. To do this, study the label of the material.

3. Wear long-sleeved gloves, a respirator and goggles to avoid getting small glass particles in your nose or on your skin.

4. When gluing fiberglass onto a drywall surface, make sure that the seams of this material do not coincide with the seams of the drywall sheets. Otherwise, the surface will lose its aesthetics and the seams will be very visible.

5. The optimum temperature for gluing fiberglass is from 18 to 25 degrees. The absence of drafts is a must.

6. Start work from the side opposite to the door.

Painting fiberglass gossamer - a popular option for repair and finishing materials made of fiberglass. You can recall another similar material, the so-called fiberglass wallpaper - but this is a ready-made finish and it is suitable for even walls. And if the walls need to be leveled, cracks removed, then the fiberglass gossamer will cope with this better and faster than plaster. It is a thin (25–50 g/sq.m), opaque and pliable canvas, which, thanks to its texture, perfectly strengthens and levels the walls before painting.

How is fiberglass cobweb made?

Despite the name, fiberglass gossamer is not woven. Fiberglass sheets consist of glass fibers, which, according to the technology, are distributed and joined together by pressing with an organic resin additive. The canvas undergoes crystallization, and it is easy to twist it into a roll. In this form, packed in a shrink film, the gossamer is delivered to the consumer.

Why do you need a fiberglass web?

Fiberglass gossamer as a new generation material meets modern requirements for wall repair. In addition to good plastering properties, a fiberglass sheet creates a reinforced, non-collapsing layer on which painting or wallpapering can be carried out. And this is done, unlike a number of plastering and painting works, quickly - by sticking to the wall.

The finished result is a flat surface: textureless, rough, resistant to moisture and mechanical damage, environmentally friendly, breathable and fireproof. And, most importantly, durable - it can be repainted over and over again at will.

Where can it be applied?

Manufacturers recommend cobweb fiberglass for already plastered walls and ceilings, or lined with drywall. Fiberglass can successfully replace the finishing putty. Especially on surfaces that are prone to cracking: the gossamer will prevent cracking and the formation of damage and flaws - that is, all those imperfections that we usually see on walls prepared without fiberglass layers.

You need to work from the corner of the room. Applying to the smeared surface, smooth it with your hands, leveling it with respect to the corner, and spread the glue under the canvas with a spatula, removing air bubbles. The standard technique is from the middle to the edge, as is done with ordinary wallpaper. On the ceiling, it is better to glue the sheets along the room from the door to the window.

It is required to comply with elementary safety precautions: in work, use gloves, in which to fill the sleeves of clothing, put on a hat and a respirator. This precaution protects against getting the smallest sharp fibers of the material on the skin and in the respiratory tract.

Further processing can be carried out after the glue has dried - usually in a day. Before painting, the surface is puttied. In one or two layers - it's up to the master, it depends on whether you need to hide the texture and reduce the amount of paint.

In practice, puttying is often skipped and glue is applied liberally instead.
