Garage doors from the corner. We make garage doors on our own: the subtleties of organizing work. Swing gate options

At current prices for materials and finished goods there is only one way to save money - to do the work of making your own hands. This also applies to metal swing-type garage doors, which, if desired, can be welded independently. You will need to study the assembly algorithm, prepare tools with materials and involve one assistant in the process.

Welded garage doors

Gate manufacturing methods

There are 3 ways to weld Garage Doors:

  1. When the construction is not yet completed, the swing gates are welded separately as a single product. Then they are delivered and installed at the site of the future opening, after which the front wall of the garage is built around the steel frame.
  2. When the garage has already been built, the doors can be made according to the size of the opening, brought to the site and mounted.
  3. According to the finished opening, gradually welding the elements right in place.

The last assembly method is well suited for motorists who first set to work on building a garage entrance with their own hands. It does not require high measurement accuracy, straightening the diagonals of the valves and moving heavy iron parts. If all operations are performed correctly, then homemade construction will function successfully and last for many years.

Procurement of materials

In order to purchase metal in the right amount to fill the entrance opening, it is necessary to measure the dimensions of the latter and the thickness of the front wall. You will need the following rolled metal:

  • an equal-shelf corner of at least 75 mm wide - for framing the walls around the entrance and for making sashes;

Equal-shelf corner different sizes
  • the same, 60 mm wide for braces;
  • steel sheet with a thickness of 2 mm or more for door panels and connections between frames;

Stainless steel sheet 2mm
  • simple cylindrical canopies (hinges) for outdoor installation;

The main types of cylindrical loops
  • valves - 4 pcs., can be welded from round timber or bought ready-made;
  • locks.

Ties in the form of metal strips 10-15 cm wide, equal in length to the thickness of the wall, can be cut in advance. Since in the process of welding garage doors with your own hands you will need different stands and linings, it is worth keeping pieces of corners, shaped pipes and other rolled products available on the farm at hand.

The list of tools is also small:

  • welding inverter;
  • UShM - angle grinder (grinder);
  • electric drill;
  • clamps;
  • measuring instruments - tape measure, ruler, square and liquid level;
  • ordinary locksmith tools - a hammer, pliers and so on;
  • expendable materials: welding electrodes with a diameter of 3 mm, circles for metal, drills.

To install locks you will need fixing hardware- bolts, nuts, washers. At the end of the work, the canvases must be primed and painted with their own hands, for which the composition GF-021 and pentaphthalic enamel (PF) are usually used, respectively.

The initial stage - framing the opening

At this stage, it is important to correctly cut and weld the corners into a single structure - a frame that will be a support for the outward-opening sashes. Framing work begins at the threshold of the garage and is carried out in the following order:

  1. Cut off 2 corners along the width of the opening and lay them along the threshold on both sides. Weld them with steel strips (ties).
  2. Cut off 4 more side corners with your own hands, whose length is equal to the height of the opening plus 2 widths of their shelves. The resulting racks must be cut at both ends so that they clearly dock with the corners of the threshold.
  3. Attach the racks to the side ends of the walls and connect them together using ties. The latter must be placed opposite the places of welding of the hinges.
  4. Weld the frame of the threshold and walls together.
  5. Repeat the action described in paragraph 1, only install the corners on the upper end of the wall. Weld them to the side racks.

During the production of work, it is necessary to ensure that the framing elements fit as closely as possible to the walls. Steel strips of connections must be laid between the shelves of the corners and the wall, and then welded.

The first stage - the manufacture of the frame

Sash manufacturing

The essence of the method lies in the fact that first, one solid sash is made right in the opening and fastened on hinges on both sides. It turns out a frame inserted into a frame, which is cut in half at the end. In order for future gates to open well, it is important to properly maintain the gaps between these frames:

  • from ceiling beam to the sash frame - 1 cm;
  • the gap between the side stand and the same frame - 5 mm;
  • lower clearance above the threshold - 2 cm.

The process begins with the installation of the side racks of the frame and is carried out in this order:

  1. The corner, cut off taking into account the upper and lower gap, must be attached to the side frame with a clearance of 5 mm and grabbed to it with a piece of metal. Repeat the operation on the other side end.
  2. Weld horizontal corners from below and above to the vertical posts, trimming them properly. Before that, you need to make a slot of one shelf with your own hands exactly in the middle of each jumper.
  3. Install canopies and weld them lower part to the frame, and the top - to the frame of the sash. The hinge must be opposite the connection connecting the inner and outer part of the gate frame.
  4. Place 2 vertical posts in the middle of the opening, fixing them to the frame by welding.
  5. Make 2 horizontal jumpers exactly in the middle of each sash.

The resulting frame, built into the frame of the opening, remains to be cut into 2 parts, which open independently thanks to the hinges. Given that the shelves of the upper and lower corners have already been trimmed, you just need to cut them from the front side.

So that the gate without canvases does not immediately sag under its own weight, temporary braces should be placed from the inside and grabbed by welding. Then, with a grinder, you need to remove the tacks holding the side corners, after which the sashes can be opened.

On the last step you need to cut and weld canvases to the garage doors with your own hands. When closed, they should overlap the frame by about half, and with this calculation, you need to cut off a sheet of metal. Then weld it to the frame, and remove the braces. It remains to install the lock and latches, and then clean and paint the gate.

Garage doors are an expensive construction, which is why many car owners tend to make and install the gate on their own. Garage door assembly technology on their own is not as complicated as it seems, and if you strictly follow the instructions, then the “home” for the car will gain reliable protection.

Manufacturing features

The process of building a garage door structure begins with the design and drafting detailed diagrams and drawings. This does not require special skills. Take paper, ruler, pencil, measure all dimensions. First determine the width. It should be equal to the width of the car body, but have an additional tolerance on both sides of at least 30 cm. To make the measurement more accurate, it is better to carry it out at several points, and then stop at the arithmetic mean value. Then measure the height. This is easier, since the garage, as a rule, is built for a specific car, so the necessary parameter is already available.

Now you can create a drawing, thinking through all the structural elements in parallel.

Scheme swing gate the simplest:

  • draw two rectangles, indicate their dimensions;
  • if you want to have sashes of different sizes, indicate this in the drawing.

Similarly, drawings are made for other types of gates, but it must be remembered that lifting and sliding types have only one section. Here you need to be careful when defining stiffeners. When drawing sectional doors counts the number of sections.

Types of structures

There are several types of garage doors.

Rollback

Their main element is a sash that moves parallel to the garage wall.

Among the main advantages of these gates are:

  • non-failure operation;
  • duration of service life;
  • strength;
  • saving space;
  • relatively low price.

The main disadvantage is that such sliding gates can only be mounted on garages with a wide facade. Its width must be at least such that the sliding sash can fit entirely on it. Such gates can be made and installed independently. The sashes are made in almost the same way as the sashes of ordinary swing gates. The difference lies in the installation: instead of hinges, guides and rollers are used.

Lifting sectional

The canvas of these gates consists of separate segments, which, when lifted, are refracted, go under ceiling covering. Their basis is a lever-spring device and chain guides. Making sectional doors at home is almost impossible.

Their advantages include:

  • multifunctionality. There are gates for low and high openings of various widths;
  • high heat and noise insulation characteristics;
  • ease of use;
  • saving space in front of the garage.

Disadvantages - relatively low anti-burglary and high cost.

lifting and turning

This is a design in which the sash, when opened, rises under the ceiling covering. Lifting is carried out by means of a hinged-lever mechanism. The design of overhead doors is quite complex. To make them yourself, you need to have good engineering experience and have special knowledge. A novice master can try to mount the finished factory-assembled gate himself.

The main advantages are increased burglar resistance and space saving. The disadvantage is the increased requirements for space under the ceiling.

If there is not enough space, then use folding gate will not work.

Automatic roller shutters (roller or roller shutters)

This design is rare. It has not been widely used because of its unreliability. These gates consist of aluminum strips that slide into a box under the ceiling. Roller blinds can be installed at protected sites and in heated garages.

Folding (folding)

This design includes several separate canvases interconnected by a dense flexible material (rubber, synthetic fabric). When opened, they fold up. When closing, the canvas stretches, completely covering the opening.

Swing type

The most unpretentious system that does not require the use of expensive materials and serious time costs during installation. The box for it is made of a metal corner, the sash is made of iron sheets. The operation of the gate is the simplest, but the reliability indicator is extremely high.

The advantages of the system are:

  • maximum simplicity of design;
  • operate without electricity;
  • universal;
  • low price;
  • reliability.

Main disadvantage- the need for free space in front of the garage to open the doors. This causes some discomfort in winter: in order to open the gate, you must first clear the space in front of it from snow.

Since swing gates are quite simple to manufacture, it is better for novice craftsmen to opt for them.

As mentioned above, the manufacture of swing gates is simpler and less expensive than the manufacture of other types of structures, so it is the technology of their creation that should be considered. Independent production of swing gates does not require hard-to-reach and expensive equipment. Materials can also be purchased at any building trade center.

Before starting work, you need to stock up:

  • steel strip or reinforcing bar;
  • screeds;
  • seals;
  • canopy;
  • clamps.

Dimensions

First of all, you need to deal with the height and width of the future input structure. The smallest width must be such that the distance from the car to the gate frame on both sides is 30 cm or more. The minimum width is 5 m, but the generally accepted gate width ranges from 2.5-3 m. This size guarantees comfortable access to the garage. When determining the width of the gate, the distance between the frame and the perpendicular wall should be taken into account. It must be at least 80 cm.

The height of the structure is calculated according to the size of the car. Under the minibus, an opening of 2.5 m is required. For an ordinary car, 2-2.2 m is enough.

To avoid inconsistencies with the garage plan, experienced professionals recommend sketching the gate during the design of the room.

Tools and accessories

Along with the materials, you need to make sure that components and tools are at hand, such as:

  • angle grinder (grinder) with a set of grinding and cutting discs;
  • welding unit;
  • locksmith's square, tape measure;
  • building level, hydraulic level;
  • accessories;
  • fasteners.

How to make and install?

Assemble the box (frame) with your own hands. It consists of two structures in the shape of a rectangle, which will later be interconnected. On the outer side of the box, hinges are welded for the installation of shutters, the inner one holds the gate in the opening. They are made from the 65th corner.

Cut 8 fragments of the corner, corresponding in size to the height and width of the gate (4 pieces of each size). Lay out the corners on a flat plane, assemble the frames. By measuring angles and diagonals, achieve perfect proportionality of the elements to the opening of the garage wall. Weld parts of structures.

Insert the finished rectangular elements into the opening, adjust to the installation site. Weld the inner and outer elements together with crossbars made of reinforcement or a metal strip, dividing the height and width of the gate into equal segments.

When using reinforcement, you can make holes in the wall, and then drive pieces of the required size of the reinforcing bar into them, fixing them by welding on the frame. Typically, connecting fragments are welded over the boundaries of the opening.

Assembly and installation of sashes

Based on the drawings, measure and cut the elements from a 40x40 mm equal-angle corner, place them on a flat plane. Assemble the basis of future doors and doors (gates). Align by measuring the diagonals and corners of all rectangular frames, and weld. Cut out two pieces from the sheet. They should be 40 mm longer than the length of the garage opening, but cut out different canvases in width. One should be 20 mm less than the width of the frame, the second - 20 mm more.

Weld the canvases with the frame, while making sure that the canvases protrude beyond the borders of the frame by 2 cm along the perimeter. A similar protrusion should be on the gate. This is done in order to close the gaps between the box and the frame. This design will prevent the penetration of excess moisture and drafts through the gaps. When welding sheets, do not make a continuous seam. It is better to weld with a dotted line according to the 1x5 principle.

The final stage is welding the loops. The lower segment of the hinge with a pin is fixed by welding to the frame, and the upper segment - to the gate leaf. For reliability, you can strengthen the fixation of the loops by means of metal plates. An iron rod can be installed at the place where the hinge is fixed to the box to increase the area to be welded. Place the gate leaf in the place indicated in the drawing. Make sure that this position allows you to open the gate without difficulty. Mark the location of the second segment of the lower loop. Weld it according to the markup, aligning exactly vertically.

Without loading the lower hinge, hang the sash. Mark the location of the top hinge on the door and frame, remove the sash. Weld the hinge segments according to the markup, hang the gate leaf, test its movement. If it opens freely and remains in the position given to it, then you can start mounting the second part. This process is similar to the one already given.

After mounting in one of the wings, install the gate, proceeding in the same sequence as for the gate itself. Install handles, hooks, locks, latches after complete installation sashes.

In a heated garage, it is advisable to sheathe, insulate and seal the gate. Also don't forget to grease the hinges.

Installation of other door models

Roller shutter and folding models involve the use of ready-made devices for opening and closing, therefore they are mainly purchased in a ready-to-install form, and also made to order, having created a scheme in advance. In such situations, you can only assemble and install the gate frame with your own hands, then hang the canvas, guided by the attached description.

A frame is not required to mount a sliding gate. Self-creation such a gate comes down to assembling one large canvas. To do this, you can apply a procedure similar to that used when assembling a canvas with a gate. For the installation of such structures, guides are placed at the top and bottom of the opening, and the web will move along them in the future. All equipment is bought ready-made.

Installation is limited only to the installation of parts according to the instructions.

The “sore spot” of such gates is the hinges. High load provokes stem breakage, displacement of loops, longitudinal deformation and other malfunctions. Systematic lubrication of the hinges will help to delay the occurrence of such breakdowns. The second problem is sagging. It may appear due to the lack of crossbars and deformation of the structure frame. In this situation, the alignment of the sashes or their replacement, as well as the installation of spacers, will help.

To date, a wide variety of garage door designs have been developed and successfully implemented in practice. We offer you a description of the most popular types of gate systems, as well as a guide for self-assembly and installation of swing gates - the easiest design to manufacture, with the arrangement of which almost every novice master can handle. As you gain experience, you will be able to assemble more complex systems.

In such gates, the sash moves to the side using a system of guides and rollers. Gates can be installed outside and inside the garage.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the main advantages sliding gate points to be noted such as:

The main disadvantage is the fact that such gates can only be installed on a garage with a wide facade. Its width must be at least such that the sliding sash can completely fit on it.

Such gates can be made and mounted independently. The sashes themselves are made in almost the same way as the sashes of ordinary swing gates. Differences are present only at the installation stage - instead of loops, guides and rollers are used.

A very convenient option. Most often there are systems in which the sash rises and is fixed above the opening. Gates are usually made of galvanized steel. Aluminum structures are also often found - such sashes weigh much less than their steel counterparts.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages are the following:

However, such gates can only be used to equip a private garage located on a protected individual plot. Lifting structures, especially those made of aluminum, have a relatively low rigidity, which does not allow them to provide the required protection of the garage.

Such gates are quite complex structure. For their self-manufacturing you need to have good engineering experience and possess the special knowledge necessary to select a suitable counterweight and install related mechanisms.

A novice master can only try to install ready-made lifting gate factory assembly. This is done quite simply in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

The structure is assembled from several horizontal sections interconnected by means of hinged loops. The end sections are equipped with rollers moving along the guide rails. The guides themselves are bent so that when the gate is opened, it can easily fit under the garage ceiling.

The design is characterized by sufficiently high rates of reliability and rigidity. Inside each section, as a rule, there is already a heater, which additionally increases the heat and noise insulation properties of the gate.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

The disadvantages are relatively low burglary resistance and high price.

To make such a gate on your own will not work. Of course, you can try, but it’s not a fact that a home-made design will work correctly. In addition, the production of sections will take an unreasonable amount of money and time.

Most often they consist of two wings. At the heart of the gate is metal carcass. Sandwich panels, steel sheets and other suitable materials can be used for cladding.

For greater convenience, a gate can be cut out in the sash.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

The main disadvantage is the need for sufficient free space in front of the garage to open the gate. This is especially inconvenient in winter - in order to open the gate, you will first have to clear the path in front of them from snow.

Swing gates are the easiest to manufacture. It is in their favor that it is recommended to give preference to novice masters.

Swing Gate Manufacturing Guide

Pre-plan the dimensions of the future gate in accordance with the dimensions of the opening for entering the garage and buy required amount materials. For greater convenience, draw up a drawing, or at least an elementary sketch.

The first stage - the mounting frame

Start by making the base frame. Raw material - metal corner. The frame will consist of an external and internal support frame.

First step. Measure the opening.

Second step. Cut the corner into blanks of the required dimensions for the manufacture of the outer frame. Lay out the resulting elements on a plane, align them horizontally and align the corners.

To adjust the horizontal, use linings, check the corners with a square. In its absence, you can simply measure the diagonals. Correct any deviations immediately.

Thus, you need to lay out the blanks in the form of a future outer frame.

Third step. Weld the carrier frame. Its outer side should be as smooth and absolutely even as possible, otherwise the gate will not fit tightly enough to it. To ensure the required smoothness, grind the welding seams with an ordinary grinder.

Fourth step. Weld vertical trimmings of the corner into the corners of the structure. They will provide the necessary rigidity of the frame, i.e., allow it to remain geometrically unchanged.

The second stage - the frame

Start building the frame. In the future, you will attach a finishing metal sheet to this frame. The frame itself can be made from a metal profile with a section of 6x2 cm.

First step. Lay the frame face up on a suitable flat surface.

Second step. Insert the rails into the base frame. Align each side of the structure carefully.

Third step. Provide a gap of 15-20 mm between the carrier frame and the inner door frame. To do this, use inserts. Thanks to this gap in the future, the sash will be able to move without difficulty.

Fourth step. Make sure the corners of the frame are straight and finally weld the profiles.

The third stage - sheathing

Be as careful and accurate as possible at this stage. The aesthetic qualities and a number of the most important functional properties of the finished structure fully depend on the correct execution of the skin.

First step. Cut the steel sheet to fit the garage doors. At the same time, the left gate leaf should overlap the right one with a 1-2 cm overlap - take this into account.

Second step. Temporarily fasten the sheets to the frame. To do this, grab them at several points below.

Third step. Trim the lining of the right gate leaf by 10-20 mm (needed for overlap, mentioned earlier).

Fourth stage. Finally weld the sheets to the frame. Weld the material first at the corners and in the center of each box, and then fix it around the perimeter. Thanks to this, the sheets will not move during operation. After welding is completed, the corner and center fixing points must be cut off.

Fourth stage - loops

Hanging hinges are best to buy.

Weld the lower hinge element to the carrier frame. Weld the top element to the outer sash. You can use a curved metal strip to strengthen the connection. It must be attached to the top of the hinged hinge and to the gate leaf.

Additionally, the rigidity of fixing the loops can be increased by welding a reinforcing insert to the inside of the product.

Fifth stage - locks and constipation

The gates in question are most often equipped with hinged or mortise locks. Additionally, it is recommended to install stoppers and a high-quality deadbolt. These products will allow you to close the garage door from the inside.

Pin stoppers without problems are made on their own. To make such a design, drive a piece of pipe into the ground or the floor of the garage, and immerse a metal rod inside it - the movable element of the stopper. The rod must be passed through a loop previously made in the sash. Make sure that the pipe is not clogged with snow and various dirt.

Locks also require timely and competent care. Protect your gate locks from moisture, especially in winter. Periodically lubricate the locks with oil.

Stage six - painting

The paint layer will provide additional protection of the metal sheet from corrosion and other damage.

Coat the metal with a primer, let it dry, and then apply a double coat of your chosen metal finish paint.

Carry out any painting work either outdoors or in a well-ventilated room!

The seventh stage - installation

First step. Install the outer and inner element of the door frame. Fix to the slopes of the gate opening with metal pins about 18 cm long.

Second step. Cut off the protruding edges of the metal pins, scald them and carefully grind them with a grinder so that in the future they do not interfere with the gate closing. You can paint the pins if you like.

Third step. Fasten the inner and outer parts of the frame with jumpers ( metal plates) in 40 mm. Weld jumpers in increments of about 50-60 cm.

Fourth stage. Hang the sashes. If you wish, you can equip the gate of your garage with automation. This is very convenient - you do not have to constantly open and close the doors yourself.

The eighth stage - warming

In the absence of high-quality thermal insulation, up to 50-60% of heat will go through the gate. If you plan to use the garage in the cold season and are going to equip it with some type of heating, be sure to resolve the issue with the arrangement of insulation.

To do this, mount a crate of wooden bars on the inner surface of the gate leaves. Select the fastening step of the elements individually according to the width of the insulation boards. For thermal insulation, it is recommended to use mineral wool and other materials based on it.

Before laying the insulation, fix a plastic film over the crate. Lay the insulation in the cells of the crate. Lay the insulation as tightly as possible, without cracks and gaps. For most regions, a 5-centimeter thick insulation layer is more than enough. Cover the insulation with vapor barrier film. On top of the crate with insulation, fill the clapboard or other facing material.

There is nothing super complicated in the independent design and installation of garage doors. You only need to follow the instructions and be careful at every stage of work. Having understood the procedure for arranging simple swing gates, you can independently build more complex structures.

Successful work!

Swing gates - the most common in the world, simple and reliable mechanism moving fence. It is not difficult to weld the gate correctly: the two-leaf design has been tested for hundreds of years. The "in place" technology is traditional for fencing of this type.

In order to weld the gates to the garage correctly, you need to select their type, type, size before construction begins.

The dimensions of the enclosing structure of the garage are calculated based on the type vehicle. The dimensions of the existing car (they are measured along the edge of the mirrors) are increased to the dimensions of the intended one in the future. Add to the resulting value:

  • 0.6 m - if the car moves straight at the entrance to the garage;
  • 1.0 m - if the entrance is from a turn.

Approximately for passenger cars, the width of the section is 2.4-2.5 m; for SUVs, it is necessary to provide for a width of 3-3.5 m. The height of the opening is designed within: 2-2.2 m.

Pre-project work

The task that must be solved before you weld the gate with your own hands is to determine their type. If the envisaged manufacturing method is homemade, only sliding gates can be an alternative to swing gates. Fences of other types - rolled, sectional, folding, it is better to order in a specialized company.

The design of swing gates that open outwards consists of two main components:

  • embedded carrier box
  • sashes directly;
  • smaller assembly units - hinges, handles, locks.

At this stage, you need to decide on the materials. The design will be lighter if the sashes are made of corrugated board - rolled metal sheets thickness from 0.35 to 1.2 mm. The frame in this case is assembled from wooden beams or metal profiles. Connections are made detachable - on self-tapping screws or screws. Gates from the profile can be insulated with foam or mineral wool and lining the inside finishing material. The disadvantage of such a fence is obvious: it can be easily disassembled into parts using a wrench. You can eliminate the likelihood of such an opening in one way: weld garage doors

If the garage is located outside the zone of constant observation, experts recommend welding metal gates. For this purpose, you need to choose:

  • for movable canvases, a steel sheet with a cross section of 2-3 mm;
  • for the frame - a profile pipe 20x40 mm.

The box is made from a corner, not less than 63 mm in size; the 70th or 75th corner is also used.

Metal parts of this thickness can be connected by a weld, forming a single one-piece structure.

The choice of frame design and drawing

The box consists of two frames fastened with jumpers. The design of the frame (shown in the photo) resembles a ring with concave edges, which covers the ends of the walls along the entire perimeter of the alignment along the ribs. The first frame - the outer frame - is made from a corner directed by the shelves into the garage. When assembling the second frame - the inner trim, the corner is laid with shelves outward.

The parts of the box must be butt welded. In this case, the corner shelves at the junction are cut at an angle of 45o. The smaller length of each corner should be equal to the distance between opposite edges of the wall minus 10mm. This centimeter is a technological gap (2x5 mm), it is necessary for the convenience of mounting the frame. Thus, the internal width of the garage opening inside the box will be equal to:

  • The width between the ends of the walls - 10mm (double the technological gap) - 16mm (double the thickness of the corner shelves).

  • The dimensions of the frame of profile pipes in width should be less than the openings between the frames by 20 mm (quadruple clearance): it is necessary for the free movement of the wings.
  • The length of the vertical guide is equal to this distance; the lengths of the horizontal ribs are reduced by 80 mm: by two thicknesses of the vertical pipes.

The design of the stiffeners should include:

  • outer frame;
  • transverse, longitudinal, and, if necessary, diagonal elements.

Assembly and welding

Watch the video on how to weld the gate.

The box is laid out on the technological table. It consists of four support platforms installed in the corners of the structure at the same height. Brick or cinder block can be used as platforms. Before welding:

  • mating corners are laid out taking into account the level and equality of the diagonals:
  • fasten with clamps;
  • "grab" with dots;
  • adjust joints;
  • weld;
  • measure diagonals.

The difference between them should not exceed 5 mm.

The operation is repeated for the second box. In a way, as in the video, the skeleton of the valves is welded from profile pipes.

The fastening of the sheets to the frame of profile pipes is carried out by welding every 100 - 150 mm. The right canvas is made wider than the left by 20-50 mm.

The hinges are fixed in the following way: the sashes are inserted into the opening and adjusted in height and level. The movement step is 5 mm. This is enough to correct a minor technological error: the vertical free travel of the blade in accordance with the drawing is 20 mm.

Garage hinges are welded in this way: the lower half (with a support rod) to the frame, and the upper half to the moving canvas. After the final adjustment of the fencing mechanism, the fastening of the hinges is reinforced with steel plates, which are scalded around the perimeter. The box is attached to the slopes with metal rods from 150 mm long.

Alternative types of fencing

Installation of sliding gates from a professional pipe with a leaf from a profile will require additional work:

  • construction;
  • plumbing;
  • assembly;
  • electrical installation.

Construction work includes, firstly, the construction of a support beam. To do this, a foundation is poured in front of the garage across the entire width of the opening, into which a 200 mm embedded channel is mounted with shelves down. Secondly, reinforcing columns are erected near the end walls, on which the structure will rest.

Gates made of corrugated board are hung on mortgages from corrugated pipes (as in the photo), which are mounted in columns. From below, carriages with rollers are attached to the sashes - at one end and an end roller - at the other. The movement is carried out along the reference channel. An electric motor is used as a drive. AT wiring diagram trip relay provided.

Final operations

All metal surfaces must be cleaned, primed and painted. Finished garage doors can be insulated. Upon completion of the work, it is worth calculating: how much it costs to weld the gate if you do the work yourself.

Most car owners try to build a spacious garage so that, in addition to the car, all tools, spare parts and consumables can be placed there. But at the same time, they don’t think about what size the gate should be, and in the end it turns out that the opening is not standard. After that, they start looking for gate manufacturers to order and realize that their cost is much higher than the budget. You have to choose from two options: to narrow or expand the garage opening, or to spend significant financial resources. There is also a third option - to independently weld the gate to the garage .

What are the requirements for gates?

Gates must:

  • easy to open by the owner of the garage and have a high degree of protection against burglary;
  • provide sufficient space for the unhindered entry of the car;
  • be protected from corrosion and other negative impacts external environment;
  • not interfere with other persons and objects when opening;
  • have a simple but solid construction.

Preparatory work

At the initial stage, the amount of material required is calculated, since a correctly drawn up estimate will allow you to avoid unnecessary expenses and shortages of material. First you need to decide on the type of gate among the following:

  1. Swing, consisting of two opening sashes, the length of which is half the width of the opening. One of them should have a door to enter the garage. Doors are attached to the sash with hinges. This type of gate is the most common and easy to manufacture.
  2. lifting and turning they are a single sash, which opens with the help of a lifting mechanism upwards with a shutter to the ceiling, or without it, but with a safety mechanism against falling. Can be equipped with an entrance door.
  3. Roller shutters consist of several sections that fold into the ceiling part automatically or manually. Usually they have electronic locks and are opened by a radio remote control. For self assembly such gates are quite complicated, as they will require a lot of time to adjust the roller shutters and adjust the operation of the mechanisms.

Note! For self-production, it is most reasonable to make the first two types of gates. They can only be made by welding metal profiles and steel sheets.

However, first, appropriate measurements are made: the opening for the gate is measured, after which a drawing is made, according to which an estimate is made. Add to list necessary materials includes:

  • metal profiles with a square section for the convenience of welding with a wall thickness of 3 mm or more and dimensions of 30 x 20 or more, depending on the width of the frame, to ensure structural strength;
  • sheet metal according to the size of the wings with a thickness of 2 mm to provide anti-vandal protection and additional strength;
  • corners to weld the frame of the gate;
  • four hinges for sashes and two for doors;
  • lock and bolt.

When calculating, it should be borne in mind that the main frame must be not only along the perimeter of the wings, but also along the diagonals. The frame for fastening consists of fastenings to the wall with internal and outside. On one of the wings, an additional reinforcement of the frame is created at the place where the door and locks are attached. When choosing steel, select low carbon annealed nickel or chromium alloyed steel or galvanized sheets. If you buy a regular steel sheet, you will need a primer, paint and solvent.

Before you weld a garage door, you need to make a frame. For this:

  1. Profile corners are cut to size with high precision so that there are no distortions during welding. Moreover, it is better to cut off at an angle of 45 0 in order to ensure maximum strength and length of the seam, although it can also be done end-to-end. Just in case, an overlap of about 200 mm is left. As a tool, you need to use a grinder (angle grinder) to get a flat surface and work with minimal cost time.
  2. After that, parts of the frame are laid on a flat surface and arc welding is performed, since frame structure requires high metal welding. The correctness of a flat, flat surface is checked using a level. Any deviation must be corrected at the initial stage, since these errors cannot be corrected later.
  3. In order to tightly fix the frame in the garage opening, it is necessary to weld on several pieces of reinforcement (at least 2-3) with a diameter of more than 10 mm and a length of about 15–20 cm on each side.
  4. Drill holes in the walls, insert the frame, and then carry out concreting.
  5. If the design of the garage does not allow making such recesses, then a second frame is welded, which is installed with inside garage and with the help of fittings, these two parts are welded directly at the installation site.
  6. One of the frames should be concreted, and the other should be left for fastening the wings. The frame can also be fixed with anchors. Another mounting option may be to form a groove in the wall and mount the frame there. All options have sufficient strength and can be used depending on the main material of the walls.

gate leaves

The manufacture of the sashes must be no less accurate than the manufacture of the frame. First, a frame is made for the sashes along the height of the frame and to the floor of the width of the opening. Profile pipes are taken from required dimensions, stacked on a flat surface and tacked by electric welding. After that, the correctness of their size is checked on the spot, and then a full welding is done, or an additional size adjustment is made. If it is planned to install a door, then an additional post is welded on one gate leaf, to which the hinges will then be welded.

The next step is to weld the hinges to the frame. More convenient to use spot welding so as not to strongly melt the metal, although it is possible to use an electric arc, it will have to be cooked very carefully. Then the position of the hinges on the sashes is measured, and the hinges are also welded in place.

After the gate frame is ready, it is necessary to cut the sheet metal, taking into account the fact that one leaf should close the other with an overlap of about 10 cm, as well as with the calculation of the door, if its installation is incorporated in the design. The edges of the sheet with the help of a grinder are cleaned of burrs, after which they are welded to the body of the valves with a continuous seam. With the formation of metal streaks, the outer surface is polished.

We install locks and additional bolts

Locks must be installed on doors and sashes. To do this, a special flange for the lock is welded onto them, and holders for bolts on the gate from the inside. But before welding, the lock is attached to it so that the fasteners are not accessible from the outside of the garage. Next, a hole is made in the frame for the lock.

Note! Bolts can be made in the form of L-shaped valves, fixed with special loops on one of the wings to provide additional fastening to the frame, or in the form of a bolt at the level of the middle of the gate.

Wall insulation and decoration

A warm garage is easy to make by insulating the gate through which the bulk of the heat escapes. Therefore, a heater is laid on the inner surface, and then sheathed with an internal finishing material. For this, it is better to choose polystyrene, as it is simply mounted and easily processed. It can be planted on an adhesive base, and the gaps can be minimized and covered with sealant to reduce heat loss. Sheathe the inside with facing plates or plastic. After completion of all work, it is necessary to paint the metal parts of the gate in a suitable color.

Conclusion

Welding a garage door is a rather laborious, but quite feasible event, since it does not require special skills, but only patience and care. With absence welding machine you can involve an experienced welder in the work, or you can rent a tool. The savings are significant.
