Deytsia graceful planting and care. Deytsia: planting and care in open ground. Types and watering of action

Deutzia is a deciduous perennial (lives about 25 years) shrub 0.4-4 m high. It belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. Natural environment Habitats are Mexico, Japan, China.

The name of the plant is given in honor of Johann van Deitz, the mayor of Amsterdam, who sponsored the expedition to the East. Dutch merchants introduced Japanese and Himalayan species to Europe in the early 19th century, and Chinese species became known towards the end of the aforementioned century.

Botanical description

Root system mixed type: 1-2 rod processes combined with fibrous roots located in the upper part. The shape of the bush is erect or spreading. The branches are hollow inside and easily break under stress. The stems are covered with smooth bark dark brown, over time, the old bark peels off and hangs in rags - this is a natural process and is not a sign of any problems.

Numerous oblong-shaped leaves are attached to short petioles, arranged oppositely, and colored green - before flowering, deutia can be confused with honeysuckle. Racemose inflorescences begin to appear on last year's shoots at the end of spring. Flowering is abundant. The diameter of the five-petal corolla is 1-2 cm, the perianth is double.

Flowers are bisexual, painted white, crimson, pink, purple tint, double color occurs. They can be simple or terry. The core consists of the ovary and long stamens. Flowering lasts about 2 months and is accompanied by a subtle, subtle aroma. After flowering, spherical seed pods are formed.

Selection of seedlings and planting of action in open ground

Deutzia ‘Scabra Plena’

When choosing seedlings in a store, you need to carefully examine the bush for damage, signs of disease, and whether the buds are intact. You can choose a seedling with bare roots rather than in a container, since you can clearly inspect the root system (the roots should not be overdried or damaged) and the cost is more affordable. Purchase such seedlings immediately before planting; when transporting, wrap the roots with thick paper.

But the best survival rate is for seedlings with a closed root system, planted in a container. It is important to pay attention to the cleanliness of the leaves so that there are no stains or various damages.

When to plant

It should be planted in the spring, when the ground has already thawed and the buds have not yet opened. Pick up open area without direct sunlight in the afternoon.

Preparation for planting and distance between bushes

If the roots of the seedling have dried out and are exposed, you need to keep the plant for 2-3 hours in a container with a clay mash made from a light pink potassium permanganate solution; cut off broken branches. Container plants are lightly watered and allowed to stand so that the roots can be carefully removed along with the earthen lump.

The bush grows quite strongly, so it is necessary to keep it at a distance of 2.5 m from other plants or any buildings. The soil needs to be loose, nutritious and drained. If the soil in the garden does not meet these parameters, the planting holes can be filled with a mixture of humus, peat, sand in a ratio of 2:1:2. If the soil is too acidic, add 300 g of slaked lime. The depth of the planting hole should be 40-50 cm. Coarse sand can be placed at the bottom as drainage.

How to plant

The soil removed from the planting hole (if it is suitable for the plant) or the prepared soil mixture must be mixed with 100-125 g of nitrophoska. Place the seedling in the planting hole, cover it with soil, the root collar should be a couple of centimeters above the soil surface. Press the soil down a little and water the bush. To stimulate tillering, shoots should be shortened to 3-5 buds. Mulch the soil surface with a layer of peat about 5 cm thick.

Watering

Not needed often. It is enough to add 1 bucket of water once a week, but in hot weather you will need 2 buckets of water at a time. Stop watering from mid-August.

After watering, loosen the soil to a depth of 20-25 cm. Remove weeds regularly.

Feeding

Fertilizing should be applied only during the flowering period. Once a month, fertilize with organic matter (3-4 liters of manure solution for each bush). Twice a season, apply 120-150 g of complex mineral fertilizers to each bush.

Trimming

Pruning should be done in spring and autumn. In spring, shorten frozen branches and cut off broken ones completely. If almost all shoots have suffered from frost, it is best to radical pruning: cut them almost to the ground, leaving only the stumps. In the same way, the plant is rejuvenated once every 5-8 years.

After the end of flowering, it is necessary to shorten the shoots that have faded this year to the first strong bud or to the base. Cut off old branches, thin out the bush, give it the desired shape.

Transfer

If there is a desire or need to replant the bush, this should be done only in the spring so that the deutzia has time to take root in the new place before the onset of cold weather. Moisten the soil, carefully dig up the bush and transfer it along with the earthen ball into new planting holes. First place a drainage layer and 20-30 g of complex mineral fertilizer on the bottom. Add soil, tamp it down, water it generously. Old branches must be cut down, and young shoots shortened by 1/3 of their length. Adult bushes take a long time to adapt after transplantation, but young ones take root quickly.

Diseases and pests

The plant is resistant to diseases and pests. Occasionally, the bumblebee proboscis may eat the leaves - also treat with an insecticide.

Frost resistance of action and shelter for the winter

The frost resistance of deutia is low, so it must be covered for the winter. In areas with snowy winters, it is enough to bend the bush to the ground and cover it with snow. In severe winters with low temperatures, shelter will be required. The safest way to build an air-dry shelter (suitable for young plants): lay the bush on the ground, make a frame, cover it with lutrasil or other non-woven material, and additionally cover it with spruce branches. Adult bushes should be tied with twine or twine, and wrapped on top with breathable material (burlap, lutrasil, etc.).

Winter-hardy species suitable for the Moscow region and middle zone that can withstand temperatures down to -18°C are Deutia longifolia, Deutia Lemoine, Deutia Amurskaya, and Deutia Rosea. However, shelter for the winter is still necessary. Deytsia rough (rough, terry) also winters in the Moscow region, but is more thermophilic and is often damaged by frost. Requires reinforced shelter. Frozen branches are pruned in the spring.

Action from seeds

How to sow in the ground

  • You can sow seeds in open ground before winter (the crops must be covered for the winter with non-woven material, which is removed with the onset of spring warmth).
  • The bed is prepared in advance so that the earth settles.
  • Fill shallow furrows at a distance of 25-30 cm, sow seeds to a depth of 1-2 cm, maintaining a distance of 8-10 cm.
  • In spring, seedlings are weeded to remove weeds and watered moderately during the dry period.
  • For the winter, cover with a layer of fallen leaves.
  • Seedlings are transplanted to a permanent location after 2-3 years when they reach a height of 25-30 cm.

How to sow seedlings

  • To treat seedlings, use boxes with moist nutrient soil.
  • Distribute the seeds over the surface of the soil, spray with a spray bottle, and cover with film or glass.
  • Ventilate regularly and spray the crops with water from a fine sprayer.
  • Expect the emergence of seedlings in about 3 weeks, then remove the cover.
  • Continue to provide plants with moderate soil moisture and bright, indirect light.
  • Plant stronger plants in open ground in the spring of the next season, and be sure to cover them for the winter in the fall.
  • Full development of the bush will take about 3 years.

Propagation of action by cuttings

Most often, actions are carried out using cuttings.

How to propagate from green cuttings

  • At the beginning of July, cut green cuttings 20-25 cm long.
  • Remove the lower leaves and keep the cuttings in a growth accelerator solution for a day.
  • Rooting is carried out in a container with sandy-peaty soil, you can add humus.
  • Place the branches at an angle of 45°, deepen them into the soil by 5-10 cm. Cover with glass or cling film and take them outside. Bring them indoors for the winter and grow the young seedlings until spring.

How to propagate from woody cuttings

Collect lignified cuttings 20-25 cm long into small bunches, tie them, sprinkle the lower part with sand, and store them in a cool room until spring. In April, plant in open ground and build a film shelter. When the buds begin to bloom, the cover must be removed.

Reproduction by layering and dividing the bush

By layering

To propagate by layering, bend the branch in the ground, make a shallow cut and cover it with soil. Rooted cuttings are separated from the mother plant next spring.

Dividing the bush

Actively used during transplantation. The bush must be dug up, the roots carefully cleared of the soil, and divided into parts. Each division must have growth buds. Plant immediately in open ground.

The easiest way to propagate is by root shoots, since the bushes quite actively form shoots, then the mother plant does not need to be disturbed. The young shoot should be dug up and planted separately.

Deutzia x hybrida ‘Strawberry Fields’ photo

One of the most popular hybrids based on Deutia gracilis and purple, with beautiful pink inflorescences of large double flowers.

Deutzia candidissima

Various interspecific hybrid forms with double flowers, bright white.

The hydrangea family (lat. Hydrangeáceae) includes 17 genera, including the genus Deutzia. According to their decorative characteristics, the plants belong to the group of beautifully flowering plants, characterized by long-lasting flowering of elegant inflorescences of white, pink, lilac-purple, odorless flowers.

Distribution area

Japan and China are considered the homeland of hydrangeas. Actions are widespread in Asia, North America, in certain areas of south-eastern Europe. In Russia, they are more often found in the southern regions of the Khabarovsk and Primorsky territories. They grow mainly on forest edges, wet rocky slopes, do not avoid light shady shelter.

Deutzia rough, variety “Candidissima”

The family is under state protection and is listed in the Red Book of Endangered Species. The reason was weak natural regeneration after damage and predatory destruction during flowering. Deutzia grows in the Far Eastern Marine Reserve and many botanical gardens of the Russian Federation. For the beauty of their flowering, many species of the genus are recommended for introduction into landscape gardening.

Description

The genus includes perennial shrubs and subshrubs, vines and herbaceous plants evergreen and deciduous. They are widespread in temperate climates and subtropics of the northern hemisphere.

The root system of deutia is fibrous taproot, consists of one or two powerful roots going deep into the soil and a large number of smaller fibrous roots located in the upper third of the main root. This structure of the root system contributes to drought resistance and easy tolerance of injuries when transplanting plants.

Deutzia scabra

In the bulk of the representatives of the genus, the leaves are simple with entire, serrated or serrated edges. Less common are plants with palmately dissected leaf blades, which give the plants an unusually elegant appearance of green lacy lace. The leaves are dark green, dull green on both sides, of different shades, petiolate, without stipules with an alternate or opposite arrangement. In autumn, the foliage takes on shades from green to yellow-brown.

Shoots are straight or curved and round. In other species they are slightly pubescent. During the flowering period, under the weight of the inflorescences, they bend towards the ground, giving the bush an extraordinary decorative effect. Young shoots are light brown, gradually darkening. In some types, the bark is gray or red-brown. The perennial bark peels off in small crusts or short strips. By autumn, the stem wood becomes woody and becomes dense and hard, but retains its flexibility. A peculiarity is the appearance in the second year of life of a through hollow hole in the center of the stem. Tubular hollow stems break easily, which must be taken into account when providing winter shelter. The growth of bushes, especially when freezing, is resumed by root shoots.

Deutia flowers are simple or double, small or medium in size (1.0-1.5 cm in diameter). Flowers with double perianth, actinomorphic, slightly zygomorphic forms are rare. By gender there are unisexual and bisexual. Moreover, based on the combination of heterosexual flowers on one deutzia plant, there are species with bisexual and female or bisexual and male flowers.

Deutzia Strawberry Fields (flowers)

A calyx of a flower with sepals of a triangular or rounded-linear shape. The sepals can be 5 or multi-sepal, loosely attached to a bell-shaped calyx, green in different shades, plexo-sepal or valve.

In species with simple flowers in the inflorescence, the corolla consists of 5 petals of white, pinkish or purple-crimson shades. In general, the flower resembles a miniature lily with a wide-open corolla and waxy, pointed petals. A distinctive feature of double flower forms is the pink or crimson color of the outer petals of the corolla with bright white petals of the core.

The flowers are collected in umbellate, oblong-racemose or complex corymbose inflorescences with drooping petiolate flowers. Inflorescences are usually located on the side shoots. Flowering is elegant and long lasting, at least 1-2 months (June-July). Inflorescences bloom on the branches of the previous year.

The fruits are presented in spherical or oblong-spherical capsules. When fully ripe, they crack at the top, scattering small seeds. Some cultivated forms do not produce fruits.

Growing and care

Natural spread of action in recent years limited, but breeders have bred a huge number decorative forms And garden varieties mostly low shrubs up to 2 m, intended for cultural use in landscaping parks and gardens, summer cottages, etc.

Location

The homeland of origin of the deutzia predetermined the choice of location for its location in gardens and garden areas. Environment should be brightly lit, but with little sun. Therefore, deutia bushes must be located in places partially protected from the scorching rays of the midday sun. Deutzia does not tolerate drafts, but a warm breeze does not harm its growth and flowering. In addition, it does not tolerate flooding groundwater. In connection with these requirements, it is best to place the action in elevated places, protected from cold air currents.

Hybrid deytsia, variety "Mont rose"

Soil

The culture thrives on neutral, nutrient-enriched soils that are sufficiently moisture-absorbing, but not dense, and breathable. To successfully grow deutia, it is better to prepare a soil mixture of 2 parts mature humus, 1 part high peat, 2 parts sand. You can add (if available) 1-2 parts to this mixture leaf soil, 2 cups of ash, a glass of slaked lime. Mix everything with the top layer of soil from the dug hole.

You can do it simpler: add a bucket of humus or compost to the drainage layer, add 300 g of slaked lime and 2 cups of wood ash, soil from a dug hole. Mix everything. Plant the prepared bush in this mixture. Be sure to add 100 g of nitrophoska to the prepared soil mixture.

Landing

The optimal time for planting deutia is in the spring before the buds bloom on the trees. We buy seedlings on the eve of planting, preferably with an open root system, which will allow us to control the condition of the roots. Before planting, carefully inspect the seedling and cut off all broken branches and roots. We shorten the roots to 35-40 cm. If they are dry, soak them in a container with root solution for 2-4 hours.

When planting several bushes in one composition or forming a hedge, the distance between the bushes is left at least 2.0-2.5 m, which is necessary for the normal development of the root system and habit of the bush. We dig planting holes according to the size of the root. At the bottom we pour a drainage layer of 15-20 cm of fine crushed stone or sand, part of the soil mixture (in a slide). We lower the prepared seedling into the planting hole, spread the roots along the earthen hill and fill it with the rest of the mixture.

When planting, make sure that the root collar of the plant is at soil level. A depth of more than 1-2 cm from the ground surface is unacceptable. We carefully compact the soil, water it (at least 5 liters of water) and mulch with any mulch with a layer of 5-6 cm.

Deytsia graceful or slender

Watering

Deiciaceae are quite resistant to short summer droughts. Therefore, they are watered no more than once a month and only during a particularly long dry period, watering is carried out every 20 days. The water requirement for a bush is 5-15 liters, depending on the age of the bush. The volume of water can be determined by the time it takes to fill the bucket. The soil should be fairly moist, but not wet. After watering, mulching is mandatory. We loosen the dried soil, destroying weeds and increasing the supply of oxygen to the upper root layer.

Top dressing

Developing a large above-ground mass, deutzia requires additional supply nutrients into the soil, especially in organic form. In the spring, after pruning, we apply a solution of mullein or bird droppings under each deutzia bush. For 10 liters of water we dilute 2 liter jars mullein or 1 bird droppings. Let it sit for several days and, depending on the age and development of the bush, pour 3 to 6 liters of working solution under each bush into pre-loosened soil.

When using liquid fertilizers, water the top of the soil with clean water and mulch. Addition clean water necessary to avoid burning small young roots. If there is no organic matter, then we add 120-150 g of complete mineral fertilizer and a glass of wood ash to the tree trunk of an adult plant for watering or loosening. The next feeding is carried out in the swelling phase of the buds (before flowering) with organic matter or complete mineral fertilizer. The latter is applied with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers during full flowering.

Trimming

Pruning is a very important moment in agricultural technology. The splendor of flowering next year depends on the quality and correctness of its implementation. In action, several types of pruning are carried out twice a year - in spring and autumn.

Annual sanitary pruning carried out in the spring at the beginning of the growing season. Stems that have frozen over the winter are cut out, as well as old, shriveled, diseased, crooked (growing inside the bush), and old branches. If the bush is thickened, cut out up to 20-25% of the old branches at the very base.

Action trimming scheme

At the end of flowering, cut out the faded shoots of the current year to the first side branch or completely to the base of the stem, if it is old and the bush needs lightening.

Final autumn pruning combined with formative. During this pruning, the condition of last year's shoots (previous year) is monitored. It is on them that flower inflorescences are laid. And they form a bush by pruning the shoots of the current year, both faded and young.

Rejuvenating and thinning pruning carried out as the bush ages. During rejuvenation, all above-ground shoots are cut off to a stump. During the summer, young shoots form from the root shoots. Of these, 4-5 of the most developed and strong are selected, the rest are cut down to soil level in the fall. A young bush is formed from the remaining shoots. Flowering occurs in 2-3 years, usually on the shoots of the previous year.

Shelter for the winter

Being heat-loving crops, deutias often freeze in winter, and in cold winters with frosts down to 20-25 * C, the entire above-ground part of the bushes freezes. Therefore, shrubby forms of plants must be covered for the winter. Young shoots of deutia up to 1 meter are quite flexible and can simply be bent, covered with earth by 15-20 cm and pinned to the ground, covered with spruce branches and dry leaves on top.

With established snow cover, it will serve as additional shelter. Older stems lose their flexibility and often break when bent. Such bushes are hilled, tied, giving the shape of a “sheaf” and wrapped in several layers of covering fabric (Lutrasil or spandbond), and covered with spruce branches on top. It opens in the spring when warm weather sets in. The bushes should not be allowed to get wet.

Preparing the action for winter

Reproduction

Deytsia is easily propagated vegetatively and by seeds. Vegetative propagation can be carried out by cuttings (green and lignified), dividing an old bush that forms many root shoots, layering.

Green cuttings held in June. Cuttings are prepared from large, well-developed annual shoots. Cut cuttings 20-25 cm long. A couple of leaves are torn off from below and dusted with root or dipped in the prepared solution for 2-3 hours. The container is filled with a mixture of garden soil, humus and sand. Moisten the root with the same solution.

The cuttings are planted obliquely, deepening 0.5-1.0 cm into the soil mixture. Containers with cuttings are covered with film and taken to a greenhouse or placed in the shade in the garden. Spray systematically. After rooting, the cuttings are transferred to a prepared bed for growing. They need shelter for the winter. Planted permanently next year.

Propagation of action by cuttings

Lignified cuttings harvested in late autumn. Cut into 15-20 cm long (for 3-5 buds), they are tied into bundles of 10 pieces. Store in boxes until spring, covered with almost completely damp sand. The container is placed in the basement. The temperature is maintained around 0*C. In the spring, they are planted in a prepared bed and grown, just like green cuttings.

Reproduction dividing the bush and layering are carried out using generally accepted methods of propagating bushy forms of plants.

It is also possible to grow deutia from seeds, but this method is rarely used by amateur gardeners. Long preparation of seeds and the inability to obtain maternal qualities in seedlings limit the use of this method of propagation.

Action against the background of the lawn

Diseases and pests

Actions are disease resistant. Among the pests, bushes are sometimes visited by bumblebee-like proboscideans (bumblebee moths). In July-August, bright green caterpillars appear with a long horn at the end and two stripes on the body. Caterpillars eat young foliage. Control measures: spraying chemicals(decis, etc.). Bioinsecticides can be offered for protection. During the mass emergence of caterpillars (July-August), spray the bushes with bitoxybacillin or, better yet, lepidocide-BTU according to the recommendations.

Flowering hedge of deutia

Use in landscape design

Large perennial bushes with a white-pink cap of flowering inflorescences are used in solitary plantings of garden and park trimmed lawns, mixborders, alpine roller coaster, along the paths. At dachas, areas are landscaped with uncut hedges. They look great in single plantings against a background of green conifers. Varieties of varieties and hybrid forms of deutia with double flowers in large inflorescences are an excellent decoration for alleys, paths, walking routes in public recreation areas (parks, sanatoriums, rest homes, etc.).

Hybrid actions (Lemoine, Strawberry Fields, magnificent) are an excellent option for decorating both public and private garden plot. The flowers of the Turbilon Rouge variety are incredibly elegant, repeating traditions in their rich inflorescences ancient China. Real oriental beauties are called deutzia rough or star-shaped, graceful, pink, purple and others decorating gardens and parks. Varietal and hybrid actions in plantings of any type look like garden aristocrats.

Planting action in open ground and caring for this shrub is not particularly difficult. In addition, the plant is little damaged by pests, for which it is valued by gardeners.

Deutzea (Deutzea) from the Hydrangeaceae family grows naturally in the mountainous regions of the temperate and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Using the inherent ease of hybridization and the formation of new forms, Victor Lemoine, a French breeder, created many hybrid forms at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Actions were brought to Europe from Japan and China in the 19th century by Dutch merchants and Catholic missionaries. The lifespan of the plant is up to 25 years.

Options for using action in garden design

In garden design, action has not only a decorative meaning, but also a practical one - it can hide the site from prying eyes, protect it from the wind, and hide ugly buildings. The shrub grows quickly and does not require particularly careful care.

  • Deutzia is a silhouette shrub. It can be used as a single plant or in a group with other shrubs. Low-growing forms of deutia are used as a potted crop, for planting in containers, along fences and paths.
  • The traditional use of shrubs is in borders, especially multi-tiered and mixed ones.
  • Deutzia hedges, which do not require shaping, divide the garden into zones. Before planting a hedge, you need to calculate the distance between the bushes - add up the estimated height of two adjacent plants, divide the result by three. The distances between the bushes can be temporarily filled with annuals or biennials, ground cover plants, and currants. Filler plants are removed as the action grows.
  • Deutzia is used as a drapery plant to hide unsightly objects on the site.

Deytsia: growing features (video)

Deutzia shrub: botanical description of the plant

Perennial shrub with a height of 0.5 to 4-5 m. Flowering begins at an average daily temperature of 15-19º C, Inflorescences are few or many flowering, corymbose, up to 4-7 cm in diameter. Oblong racemose up to 7 cm in diameter. Broad pyramidal up to 8 cm in diameter. Flowers are 1-2 cm in diameter, white, pink, lilac.

Deutzia develops better and blooms earlier if the spring was warm and humid. The total flowering period of numerous varieties of Deutia is 90 days, which allows you to create a garden of continuous flowering on your site. Grow on humus-rich soils fertile soils. Requires full sun and partial shade.

Main types of action

Deutzia is capable of developing such a mass of flowers that it will completely hide the foliage underneath.

Deutzia pink

An elegant, medium-growing shrub with a foam of pale pink flowers. The hybrid was created using two types - Deutzia purpurea and Deutzia graceful. Medium-sized bush up to 1 m high.

Tall bush up to 2 m in height. Double flowers up to 3 cm in diameter are collected in large inflorescences up to 12 cm long. Flowering time is June-July.

Deytsia graceful

The bush is up to 1 m high and spreads up to 1.5 m wide. Early flowering time is May-June. The leaves are oval, olive color. The flowers are snow-white, star-shaped, collected in racemes. IN favorable conditions gives annual growth of up to 25 cm in height and up to 30 cm in width.

Deytsia terry

The terry variety D. rough plena (D. scabra plena) is widespread. It blooms with white flowers on the inside and pink-purple on the outside.

Deytsia hybrid

Garden hybrids not only combine best qualities parental forms, but also superior in abundance and duration of flowering. Variety D. Contraste has purple-lilac flowers.

Popular varieties of deutzia

Deutzia blooms earlier than all the shrubs on the site.

A spreading shrub up to 2 m high, growing up to 1.5 m wide. It blooms in spring with bright pink or lilac flowers with slightly curled petals forming apical racemes. The leaves are oval, large, dark green in summer, golden in autumn.

Hybrid. Collected in paniculate inflorescences large flowers up to 3 cm in diameter, painted in lilac-pink tones. The bush stretches up to 1.5 m.

Giving growth of 30-40 cm per year, it grows up to 2 m. Solid, raised branches form a spreading crown, like an umbrella. Blooms in summer, in June, white, with pink tint, double flowers.

The most stable species for the Moscow region. A medium-sized bush up to 1.5 m high. It blooms in May with deep pink flowers with white cores.

Winter hardiness of shrubs and rules for preparing for wintering

Deytsia is a relatively winter-hardy crop. North winds, lack of snow cover, fluctuations low temperatures can lead to damage to the root system, dehydration and drying out of the aboveground part of the bush. Plants native to the northern parts of their range and the high mountainous regions of Northern China tolerate winter well.

To protect against freezing, dry leaves are raked under the bush in a layer of 20 cm. In the autumn, before all the leaves have fallen, the deutzia is tied with covering material, pinning the lower edge to the ground to avoid drafts. The roots are covered with earth, and then with fallen snow, and covered with straw. Flexible branches of young plants no more than 1 m high are bent to the ground and covered with earth or snow.

Covering with spruce branches for the winter begins in November, when the average air temperature becomes stably negative. Previously, in October, the crowns are tied in a spiral, bent to the ground, tied to pegs. The best covering material is spruce spruce branches. It holds snow well, provides good air exchange, prevents damping off and rotting, and protects the plant from small rodents.

Deytsia: basic rules for planting and care in open ground

Deytsia is not demanding on the soil - it grows wherever water does not stagnate. Seed germination lasts from 1 to 3 years. The plant propagates by sowing seeds, dividing the bush, layering and cuttings.

How to propagate by cuttings

  • In June or September, cuttings 7-15 cm long and 5 mm in diameter are taken from semi-lignified annual shoots. In this case, the cuttings must have at least three buds;
  • the lower cut is made 2-3 mm from the kidney at an angle of 90º;
  • truncated leaves are left in the upper part, leaf blades are removed from the lower half;
  • cuttings are treated with a root stimulant;
  • cuttings are placed in sand at an angle of 30º;
  • spray with a spray bottle several times a day;
  • duration of root formation - about 23 days;
  • Rooted cuttings are planted in a container.

How to propagate by layering

  • select a flexible young shoot, make a 4 cm oblique cut and insert a match into it;
  • place the shoot in a hole 15 cm deep and fill it with peat soil mixture;
  • pin the cuttings to the ground with a twig, tying the end to a peg;
  • leave connected to the parent plant for about 6-12 months until rooting;
  • After rooting, cut it off from the parent plant and replant it in a new place at the same depth.

Planting actions in the ground

  • Prepare a hole 50 ⅹ 50 cm deep;
  • pour drainage - sand in a layer of 10 cm at the bottom;
  • distribute the roots evenly in the hole and cover them with a planting mixture consisting of humus, compost or peat and sand in equal parts;
  • to neutralize acidic soil, add 200 g of slaked lime or wood ash to the pit.

Cuttings can be planted in open ground in October. In this case, the formation of callus and the first roots in cuttings occurs in May of the following year. The younger the mother plant, the better the cuttings take root.

After early spring pruning, mineral fertilizers are applied. Feeding with diluted manure (1 kg per 10 l) will improve flowering. I mulch with peat in a 5 cm layer.

Pruning is carried out after flowering or during the dormant period. All branches are cut into two eyes. It is necessary to cut out old unproductive branches and weak liquid shoots. If you are late with pruning, the plant may get sick or miss flowering this year. Pruning under the stump is done for the purpose of rejuvenation. It is done in the spring before the sap begins to flow, or late in the fall.

If there is an old deutzia growing on the site, you should remember that it may not withstand radical pruning. In this case, pruning is carried out in several stages:

  • in the first year, a third of the oldest branches are evenly cut off, leaving stumps of 15 cm and observing whether the young shoots will grow back the next year;
  • in a year early spring, before sap flow, another third of the bush is removed, making inclined cuts just above the buds;
  • in the third year, the remaining branches are cut out.

Features of growing plants in the Moscow region

In the temperate continental climate of the Moscow region, deutzia develops well and blooms profusely. The shrub is fed in spring or in the first half of summer. Feeding at a later time is undesirable, as it can lead to late growing season, which will stop the hardening of the plant necessary for wintering.

The plant requires watering during drought - 15 liters for each bush 2-3 times a month, but does not tolerate waterlogging. Early frosts can damage the ends of non-woody shoots with flower buds, which can delay flowering by one year. It is necessary to thin out thickened bushes and carry out pruning correctly. Hilling and shelter will help you survive the winter.

Deytsia is characterized by rapid growth. Under favorable conditions, it blooms in the third year after sowing.

Action: care and reproduction (video)

Due to the ability to grow quickly and recover after frost, deutia are widely used in decorative floriculture. In modern green construction such decorative flowering shrub, as action, is a significant component, the use of which increases the effect of a garden or park composition. In addition, deutzia grows well in city conditions - it is resistant to dust, smoke and gases.

Deutia bush is a genus with 60 species of flowering plants in the Hydrangeaceae family. The natural habitat of this genus is eastern and central Asia (from the Himalayas east to Japan and the Philippines), central America and Europe. Also, a huge number of plant species are observed in China (about 50 varieties).
Deutzia flowers are named after the 18th century Dutch philanthropist and botanist Johann von der Deutz.
Deutia bush is quite a new plant for modern gardens, the only exception is the effect of scab, which was noticed in Japanese gardens from Enegelbert Kampfer and Karl Peter Thunberg. But actually for the first time this flower appeared in Europe only after 1830, and two or three species noted by the Royal Horticultural Society were collected from wildlife only during the 20th century.
Deutia bush is grown as ornamental plant thanks to its pink and white flowers. Many varieties and hybrids are also used for growing in the garden, including varieties with double flowers: for example, Deutia lemon is a hybrid of Deutia gracilica and Deutia parviflora. Creating hybrids allows gardeners to reap greater benefits—for example, one species with drought tolerance and even more fragrant flowers. Sometimes, without careful study, it is very difficult to understand which specific family a particular variety or hybrid belongs to. We bring to your attention photos of the action and detailed description the process of planting and care during the growing process. In addition, descriptions of the most popular varieties actions, such as white and pink, hybrid and terry, wool, strawberry and pink pom pom.
Deuterium flowers are often used as a border plant due to their height. Some varieties of deutia are recommended for use as ground cover, for rock gardens, or simply for growing in containers and pots.

Description of the action and its photo

Deutia is mainly a shrub, ranging from one to four meters in height. Most are deciduous, but some subtropical varieties can be evergreen. The leaves are opposite and have serrated edges. Look at the photo of the deutzia shrub in the variety of varieties presented:

Deutia flowers grow in the form of a panicle or shield. The flowers are mostly white, but some varieties can be pink and red. They can be single with five petals or double with more petals. They grow in loose clusters and bloom from late spring to early summer. Deytsia is good because it does not cause allergies.
The bushes, which have shredded bark, produce small fruits in the form of a dry capsule containing numerous small seeds. Recognizing species is very difficult, often requiring knowledge of microscopic details such as leaf structure and seed capsule structure.
Not flowering plant easily confused with a honeysuckle bush.

Deutzia shrub care

Many varieties of deutia do not tolerate winter cold, so the plant should be placed in a room well protected from drafts and frost. The Deutia plant is very patient when cared for. various types soil and water conditions. But when caring for a flower, you should make sure that it is grown in the sun in moist but well-drained soil with humus and neutral acidity. It is not forbidden to plant deutia in partial shade, but you should know that there will be much fewer flowers than when in the open sun. When organizing the care of deutzia shrubs, you should follow the rule of providing diffused sunlight throughout the daylight hours.
As a rule, the plant is not vulnerable to various diseases and pests.

Caring for deutia includes the process of pruning, since all species grow on woody growths that appeared after the previous growing season. This procedure is very important for its growth, but you need to choose a time when flowering has already ended - most often this is mid-summer. If you prune them too late, they won't have enough time to produce new stems to flower. next year. Pruning in winter leads to the fact that the deutzia will remain without flower buds for the entire next summer. And next spring the flower and stem will not appear either.
It is required to shorten the plant by about one third of its entire length. If you prune down to the soil level, this will stimulate the growth of new root shoots, which will soon acquire their full length and ensure the continuity of healthy shoots for the next year.

Planting action

Deutzia propagates without problems using cuttings 8-10 centimeters long and soft shoots in May or June (or in July, when the wood is harder). They are placed in a mixture of sand and sandy peat and subsequently in a greenhouse, under glass or under plastic film. Before planting, young plants must be placed in good soil into the nursery space, and the roots should be pinched a little so that the flower bushes better. Only after two years is it recommended to plant the action in a permanent place. And the best result can be achieved only if the plant is placed in loamy soil, but not too dry.
Also fertilize the soil by placing well-rotted manure over the roots or periodically applying fertilizer. this completes the planting action and then you should organize proper care behind the bushes in order to get excellent results in the very near future.
