Hello, dear friends of gardeners!

Few household plots do without a bed of white cabbage. And there are many reasons for this! After all, it contains almost all known vitamins, essential amino acids, “useful” sugar, enzymes, and easily digestible vegetable protein. A huge variety of dishes are prepared from it, used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.

cabbage varieties, adapted to various weather conditions (cold-resistant, heat-resistant, drought-resistant), allow it to be grown in almost all regions of Russia. In terms of ripening, white cabbage is early ripening, mid-ripening or late-ripening. If there is a desire and climatic conditions allow, then you can enjoy fresh cabbage from your own garden from the end of June, planting several varieties of different ripening periods in the garden.

cabbage varieties

Ultra-early varieties of cabbage(vegetation period from 50 to 90 days): Transfer F1 (50-60 days), Express F1 (44-48 days), Zemlyachka (45-50 days), Premiere (50-55 days).

Early ripe varieties of cabbage(vegetation period 100-120 days), the yield is lower than mid-season and late-ripening varieties, but it has very tender and juicy foliage. Is one of the first spring suppliers of fresh vitamins. It is used fresh or for cooking various dishes, but is not subject to storage and fermentation. Early maturing varieties and hybrids of cabbage include: June (90-117 days), Kazachok F1 (95-110 days), Golden hectare 1432 (115-125 days), Number one Gribovsky 147 (93-110 days), Kraft (105-110 days), 115 days), Malachite F1 (100-108 days), Dawn (95-110 days), Early maturing (95-100 days), Dithmarscher (95-110 days), Nozomi (105-115 days), Matryona F1 (95-110 days 105 days) and others.

Mid-season varieties of cabbage(vegetation period 130-150 days), in turn, are subdivided: medium-early and medium-late. They give more high yield than early-ripening varieties of cabbage, have a denser head, are used for fresh consumption, pickling and storage. Mid-season varieties and hybrids of cabbage: Belarusian 455 (115-130 days), Ladoga F1 (135-150 days), Nadezhda (128-135 days), Stakhanovka 1513 (130-140 days), Slava 1305 (125-135 days), Gift (130-140 days), Dobrovodskaya (125-135 days), Merchant (135-150 days), SB3 F1 (120-135 days), Siberian (130-150 days), Taininskaya (130-150 days), Favorit F1 (140-150 days) and others.

late-ripening varieties of cabbage(vegetation period 160-180 days) - the most productive. It has a much higher taste and consumer qualities, it is perfectly stored (when right conditions it stays fresh until the next season). It is believed that in cabbage late deadline maturation accumulates less nitrates. It is used for long-term storage, for processing and fresh consumption. Late-ripening varieties and hybrids of cabbage include: Amager - 611 (155-170 days), Kolobok F1 (165-175 days), Krumont F1 (150-160 days), Wintering - 1474 (170-185 days), Kharkiv winter (160- 170 days), Lezhky (155-165 days), Monarch (170-180 days), Late Moscow 15 (150-165 days), Aros F1 (155-165 days), Garant (170-180 days), Bianca (155- 165 days), Blizzard (160-180 days), Dominant (160-170 days), Understudy (155-160 days), Belfry F1 (160-180 days), Stone head (175-185 days), Late Langedijker (175 -180 days), Prestige F1 (150-165 days), Extra F1 (155-170 days) and others.

There are enough varieties of white cabbage, which can be grown in almost any region of Russia, for example: Moscow late 15, June, Golden hectare 1432, Krumont F1, but, of course, it would be better to give preference to varieties adapted to the climatic conditions of a particular region.

For the Northern and Far Eastern regions, such varieties of cabbage are suitable as: Sibiryachka 60, June, NIIOKh 80, Parel, Khutorok, Number One, Blizzard. For the Central region: Albatross, Aros, Hermes, Solo, Belorusskaya 85, Ladoga 22, Krumont F1, Moscow late and others. For the southern region: Kubanochka, Quartet, Marathon, Orbita, Bowl and others.

Pre-sowing preparation of seeds

If seeds from your garden will be used for planting cabbage, then first you need to sort them out and leave only those that are larger than 1.5 mm. Before planting, they need to carry out antifungal treatment. This is done as follows: the seeds are dipped in warm water (temperature 48-50 degrees) for 15-20 minutes. After that, they are immediately lowered for 1-2 minutes in cold water and lay out on a towel to dry.

To dress cabbage seeds, you can use a warm 1% solution of potassium permanganate (soak for 25 minutes) or use special preparations from specialized stores. For example: Maxim, Fitosporin-M, Albit, Baktofit. The processing time for cabbage seeds is from 8 to 18 hours, depending on the preparation used.

If cabbage seeds were purchased in a store, then the package should indicate whether they were pre-sowing treatment. In this case, they should not be heated or pickled. If the seeds are colored in different colors (encrusted) - this means that they have already been fully prepared and they can be sown immediately in the soil (without pre-soaking). Before sowing, unencrusted cabbage seeds must be soaked for 12 hours in any nutrient growth stimulator: Potassium humate , Epina (2 drops per 0.5 tablespoons of water), Zircon. Then the seeds need to be washed clean water. The next step in preparing cabbage seeds for sowing is soaking them for 12 hours until completely swollen. Plates with cabbage seeds are placed in a warm place, every 4 hours the water in them must be changed, and the seeds mixed. During soaking, cabbage seeds should only swell. After this procedure, the seeds in wet rags (gauze) are placed on the top shelf of the refrigerator (+1 ... + 3 degrees) for 24 hours. Such a hardening procedure allows you to accelerate the germination of plants and increases their cold resistance.

It’s worth mentioning right away that it makes sense to grow cabbage seedlings in room conditions, only ultra-early and early-ripening varieties of cabbage, in order to get tasty vitamin products on your site in the early stages. The first reason is that in room conditions it is difficult to create the recommended conditions for growing high-quality seedlings (more on this in the next article). And mid-season and late-ripening varieties of cabbage are planted for seedlings at a time when already natural weather conditions make it possible to grow cabbage seedlings directly on the site. I prefer mid-season and late-ripening cabbage varieties to be sown with seeds immediately on pre-prepared beds at the optimum time. Perhaps such a technique is not acceptable only for the regions of the Far North.

Sowing dates for early cabbage varieties for seedlings depend on the region of residence, but it must be remembered that 35-45 days should pass from the moment of emergence of shoots to transplanting into open ground. Considering that well-rooted seedlings of cabbage can withstand light frosts, for central Russia and the North-Western regions, the optimal time for planting early-ripening varieties of cabbage for seedlings is March 5-15.

Sincerely, Sergey Mozgovykh

Cabbage is grown on almost all continents. Considering the area allocated for it, this vegetable is number one among garden crops. The most common among all types of cabbage is white cabbage. This is due to its valuable properties: good taste and nutritional characteristics, resistance to low temperatures, high yield.

White cabbage is one of the most important vegetable crops also because thanks to different terms ripening, eat it fresh throughout the year. All its varieties (early, mid-season, late) have independent value. Anyone who is going to cultivate cabbage in his garden needs to know what her the best varieties for open ground.

Used in salads, soups. Not suitable for pickling. Among them, the most highly productive varieties are: June, Malachite, Gribovskaya, Golden hectare, Nakhodka, Yaroslavna, Rosava, Zora; hybrids: Transfer, Aladdin, Express, Pharaoh.

It is possible to harvest early cabbage from the beginning of June. A good and high-quality vegetable is obtained if it is correct: they choose varieties, a plot for crops, prepare seeds for sowing (calibration, drageeing, dressing), grow seedlings, harden them in a timely manner and plant them in open ground, use fertilizers and plant protection products.

Usually the seeds of early cabbage are sown in closed ground in early February at the rate of 8-10 g/m2, the width between rows is 4-5 cm, the depth of the hole is up to one centimeter. Plants dive at the stage of the first true leaf into seed boxes or into a greenhouse in a container with peat with a diameter of 6x6 cm. Hardened seedlings (55-60 days old, with 5-6 leaves) are planted in open ground. The best time for this is the end of March-beginning of April.

To obtain a crop at an earlier date, the plants are planted under a film. This speeds up the maturation of the heads by about 15 days. Seedlings are planted in wide rows, between which 45-65 cm, between plants in a row 35-40 cm, to a depth of the first true leaf. Care must be taken not to damage the core of the sprout.

They take care of the plants in the future, feeding them in a timely manner with organic fertilizers (manure diluted with water 1:5, bird droppings - 1:10) or ammonium nitrate (25-30 g per 10 liters of water) - they start five to six days after planting. Approximately 0.5-0.9 liters of the working solution goes to one plant. Every 7-10 days, row-spacings are fluffed to a depth of 8 cm, if necessary, watered, then they fight pests and diseases, and also destroy weeds.

They are fed once or twice, depending on how much the soil is enriched with nutrients, watered 1-7 times (depending on the weather): in the first growing season per 1 sq. m. - 25-30 liters of water, in the second - 35-40 liters. Plants spud before the formation of cabbage heads - due to this, an additional root system increasing their durability. Harvested selectively when the cabbage reaches about one kilogram in weight. Cut off hard heads with 2-3 cover sheets.

Mid-season varieties

The crop of mid-ripening cabbage is harvested in late July-early September. These varieties are mainly used fresh and after cooking, they are suitable for fermentation. Best mid-season varieties: Gift, Stolichnaya, Slava 1305, Braunshveitskaya, Belorusskaya 455; hybrids: Hermes, Haniball, Megaton. Seedlings from open ground are planted in a permanent place immediately after harvesting early cabbage and at the same time as late cabbage (May 15-June 20, depending on the region).

Part of the seedlings of these varieties are usually grown indoors, and the other - in the open, in special nurseries. Plants of a mid-season variety (age 50 days) are planted in a permanent place according to the scheme 65-70 cm x 45-50 cm, to a depth of the first true leaf, in the afternoon, if necessary, watered (per plant up to 0.5 l of water ). After 5-7 days, they check whether they have taken root. To provide the soil with a sufficient amount of moisture, the covered pits are sprinkled with dry earth, peat, etc. after irrigation. In the future, they take care of mid-ripening cabbage in the same way as for early ones. Mid-ripening cabbage is harvested when dense heads weigh an average of 3-5 kg, always with two or three covers. Plant residues are immediately removed from the bed, using them for feeding animals or for compost.

Late varieties

The group of late cabbage varieties is one of the most widespread and occupies up to 80% of the area allocated for this crop. Exactly late cabbage provides the population with fresh and processed products in the autumn-winter and spring periods.

The most high-yielding varieties are: Moscow Late, Blizzard, Geneva, Sugar Loaf, Kamenka, Snow White, Khalif, Turquoise plus; hybrids: Extra, Aros, Amager, Bartolo.

Late cabbage is grown by seedlings and sowing seeds. Importance in increasing the productivity and shelf life of the vegetable has right choice varieties, timing of sowing or planting seedlings in the ground. If seeds are sown or seedlings are planted too early, cabbage heads may crack at the end of the growing season, impairing their storage and marketability. Delay in planting plants leads to the formation of small and loose heads, which means that the crop is partially lost.

For planting seedlings, the best time is the last decade of May-first half of June (in the southern regions - the second decade of June), and for sowing seeds - the end of April. Seedlings, which are 40-45 days old (5-6 true leaves), are planted in a permanent place with a row spacing of 55-90 cm and a distance between plants in a row of 45-60 cm. To a depth of 6-7 cm (to the first leaf). Water if necessary. Overgrown and damaged seedlings should not be used.

During the growing season, cabbage is fed up to two times nitrogen fertilizers, organic fertilizers are applied to the site (and part of the phosphorus-potassium x, the rest of the mineral fertilizers - in the spring for cultivation). Late varieties through sowing seeds are grown on soils that are clean from weeds. Before this, the soil is fluffed and its surface is leveled. Sown according to the scheme of planting seedlings. 4-6 seeds are laid in a nest to a depth of 1-2 cm. Sprinkled with humus or peat on top, which contributes to their good germination. Emerging shoots are treated with pesticides. Delay in processing for a day or two can lead to the death of plants. At the stage of 2-3 true leaves, plants are thinned out - the best ones (up to 4) are left in the nest. In the phase of 6 true sheets, thin out again, leaving the strongest. Care in the same way as for seedlings. At the beginning of the growing season, plants are watered at the rate of 300-400 liters of water per 10 square meters. area, and during the period of active growth - 500 liters per 10 square meters.

Late cabbage tolerates temperatures down to minus five or six degrees. However, the heads intended for storage must be collected before freezing, preferably in one go. Watering is stopped 15-20 days before this - this prevents cracking of the heads and improves the storage of the vegetable. If you are late with the harvest, the heads may freeze slightly and will not be stored well. Intact dense heads of cabbage are selected for storage, leaving up to five cover sheets and an outer head up to three centimeters long on them. Cabbage uprooted from the ground is well kept.

Late varieties are stored in trenches, special storages at -1 + 1 degrees and relative humidity of 90-95%. The room must be ventilated. Selection of the best varieties of white cabbage, optimal time planting seedlings or sowing seeds, proper care behind the plants provide a conveyor supply of vegetables to the table.

How to choose white cabbage varieties

Care includes watering, weeding and row spacing, fertilizing, pest and disease control.

Boxes with seedlings are placed on the windowsill, every other day the soil is sprayed with water. At a temperature of 18-20 degrees shoots appear on the 5-7th day. After the emergence of seedlings, it will be correct to move the box with seedlings to a room whose temperature does not exceed 7-8 degrees. If this is not done, the seedlings will quickly stretch and then die.

What varieties are there and how do they differ

Mix cabbage, apples and carrots with salt. take a big enamel pan, scald it with boiling water, cover the bottom with half of the prepared upper cabbage leaves. Put part of the cabbage mass on the leaves, shift with cranberries, then add the next part. Put the cranberries back in. And so on. The last layer should be cabbage.

Early varieties

For seven kilograms of cabbage, you need to peel a kilogram of carrots, half a kilogram of onions. It will take one hundred grams of salt and a bay leaf with black peppercorns to the bottom of the dish.

Our grandmothers are sure that they only fit well winter varieties cabbage for sauerkraut. Actually it is not. The main thing is that the head of cabbage is dense, the leaves are juicy, the hands are skillful, the rest will follow. - I really liked Kiloton cabbage, Megaton is a large juicy tasty, it is good in pickling, it is stored well, it is still like new -. I like varieties with bitterness, so I refused the "Gift" variety, I grow Slava and Moscow late, they are juicy and without bitterness, both varieties are suitable for fermentation, but Slava has a drawback - it is prone to cracking, so it will not be worthy until late autumn , but in fresh salads good. Varieties that are intended for long-term storage should also be used a few months after harvest, during storage they accumulate sugar and become tastier (Kolobok, Amager, etc.).

Medium varieties

And I like the variety "Sugarloaf", and also Extra.

Early varieties of cabbage are not particularly productive and are only suitable for fresh consumption. Its heads of cabbage grow medium-sized and quite loose, and when they grow, they usually crack. But although such cabbage is not suitable for processing and long-term storage, it is impossible to replace it - after all, it ripens in just 60-80 days after planting seedlings in the ground. To prevent cauliflower seedlings from stretching, immediately after hatching for 5 days, they create favorable Conditions: Having determined for yourself the time when to plant cauliflower seedlings and having properly prepared the seed material, you can proceed directly to sowing it. But before that, take care of the nutrient soil in which the seedlings will be grown. It can be purchased or prepared as follows:

Late varieties

The first two weeks, the plants are carefully watered every 2-3 days at the rate of 8-10 liters per sq.m, then watering is carried out once a week (12-15 liters per sq.m). It will be correct to transfer the watering time to the morning or evening. Water temperature for irrigation is not lower than 18-20 degrees. The most intensive watering should be carried out during the formation of heads. It is necessary to ensure that cabbage leaves do not wither from a lack of moisture in the soil, which leads to the death of thin roots in the plant.

Cover the cabbage prepared for sauerkraut with the remaining upper cabbage leaves, cover with a plate of a smaller diameter than the pan, oppression is placed on it. Leave in this position for a day right at room temperature. Chop the cabbage with thin lace (experiment by turning a piece of head to get exactly lace) and grind it with salt. Grate the carrots with a combine or a coarse grater, thinly chop the onion into half rings. Stir, rubbing again, onions and carrots with cabbage. Put a bay leaf and pepper at the bottom of each jar, tamp the cabbage on top. She must be under oppression for some time. Juice will stand out and flow over the edge, so it’s better to put the jar on a plate.

Zoned varieties are always better

Varieties and features are not much different from those listed above. It should only be noted that it makes no sense to leave early or mid-season varieties for storage. Hybrids are especially good for storage, they have surpassed their base in this.

After about 10 days, the seedlings are picked. Before picking, the plants are watered with a solution of potassium permanganate. Seedlings dive into pots or cups 6x6 cm in size, filled with the same soil mixture. Each seedling, when picking, deepens into the soil to the cotyledon leaves. Pots with pickled seedlings are kept at a temperature of 17-18 degrees. When the seedlings take root, after 4-5 days the temperature is reduced during the day to 12-14 degrees, at night - up to 10-12 degrees. Seedlings are watered as the soil dries out, the water temperature for irrigation is 18-20 degrees. The room is regularly ventilated.
After a day, remove the foam that appears on the surface with a spoon or slotted spoon. Pierce the cabbage to the bottom in several places with a wooden splinter. Return oppression. And let it wander further.

Medium varieties of cabbage, which are conventionally divided into medium-early, mid-season and medium-late, are something in between early and late varieties of cabbage. In comparison with the former, they are more productive, have a denser head, but are not so delicate in taste and ripen much longer: 85-120 days pass from planting seedlings in the ground to harvesting. Late varieties averages are inferior in yield and shelf life.
