How to sew beautiful chair covers. How to sew furniture covers with your own hands. Features of covers for high chairs

Every needlewoman has a desire to beautifully and effectively transform the design of a room and its interior, but not every one of them wants to make any drastic changes or resort to large-scale renovations. One of the simplest, but at the same time effective ways tailoring will logically complete the interior or emphasize it original covers for chairs and stools.

Such design elements can not only please the eye and give old furniture new life, but also protect it from various kinds of pollution and pests. To discover this practice, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with it in full. This material will tell you how to sew a cover for a chair, an attachment for a stool, patterns for chair covers, what fabric to choose for this, and what features the sewing process involves.

A cover can bring back the popularity of an old chair

Benefits of making your own chair covers

Firstly, the covers, which were created with your own hands, not only meet all the style preferences of the hostess, but are also made conscientiously, from quality material. Chairs with backrests and stools in protective covers do not lose any of their practical properties, but acquire new characteristics: beauty, elegance. Removable upholstery protects furniture from premature aging and abrasion.

Simple cover for kitchen chairs

During the sewing process, you can determine how well a particular fabric is suitable for the seat, how it sits and stays on it. It is impossible to check this when purchasing store products.

Important! If the case is sewn by hand, it will be of high quality and will cost a minimum cash or almost free if fabrics from old things were used for sewing.

Homemade stool covers

The advantages of making “upholstery” with your own hands are obvious:

  • The seats will be original and will fit perfectly into the interior of the room if certain requirements are met;
  • Furniture that has been improved through “cladding” will become more comfortable and will “live” longer due to its protection;
  • Manufacturing will take little material and money, and the appearance of the furniture will change dramatically;
  • Removable covers can be easily removed and washed if they get dirty.

Covers not only protect furniture, but also complement the interior

How to choose a style

Chair decoration is classified according to several factors: style, which includes the shape and function of the products, as well as the material used to make them. The latter will be discussed in detail in the next section.

Depending on the shape of the products, they are divided into several categories:

  • Solid ones that fully cover the furniture external influence. They cover not only the seat, but also the back and legs. They have a strong fixation, which helps to radically change the design of furniture and hide its shortcomings;

A one-piece cape, which has already become a traditional option for chairs with a backrest
  • Separate, which will include separated covers for the back and seat. Due to this, specific advantages appear: ease of care, since you can easily remove part of the decor and wash it, practicality.

Separate elements are practical and original
  • Only sitting. It only covers the seat and bottom part chairs. This option is the most practical and requires little time and economic investment.

The cover on the seat reliably protects it from abrasion

The choice of style also comes from the purpose and functions of the cases, based on which they are divided into:

  • Everyday accessories used every day. It is worth remembering that such covers must be washed more often due to constant load. To do this, when choosing a material for them, they rely on dense and highly resistant fabric that is easy to clean;

A simple cape for everyday use
  • Solemn. They are intended for festive events and have the main task of decorating the design and causing a “wow” effect among guests, focusing attention on the table. They differ from ordinary ones in that they are usually made from expensive types fabrics with various decorations in the form of bows, frills, ribbons and draperies.

Formal covers effectively focus attention on yourself and the table

Choosing fabric for sewing

Sewing can be done from the most different materials. It all depends on the final purpose of the cover. For daily use you need a practical and inexpensive fabric, and for the holidays you need a beautiful and elegant one. In addition, they take into account the room in which the chairs are located, its purpose and its own interior.

Important! For everyday use, you should choose a wear-resistant material that can be removed and washed or knocked out at any time. One of the criteria is also the absence of electrification and absorption of contaminants. Some of the best fabrics for sewing are considered to be cotton, microfiber, linen or silk.

Stylish case in light colors

Cotton fabrics

Among them, the priority is satin, calico, denim or twill. Their key advantage is that they hold their shape well, do not cause allergies in sensitive people and are machine washable. Cotton fabrics are inexpensive and come in a variety of shades, colors and patterns. They also have disadvantages: rapid fading and getting wet.

Cotton covers

Linen fabrics

These include matting, linen itself and canvas. They are environmentally friendly, high strength, dirt-repellent and can be subjected to reinforced machine washable and intensive use. Also, linen does not absorb dirt well, it is hypoallergenic and easy to care for. Rough, minimally processed linen fabrics are ideal for everyday slipcovering. The disadvantages are: difficulty in cleaning and ironing, rough texture. Linen covers are suitable for everyday use in country or ethnic style rooms.

Linen fabric looks practical but beautiful

Flock and microfiber

These materials are new generation materials. Their main advantages were:

  • Wear resistance;
  • Attractiveness;
  • No creasing;
  • No deformation when washing.

Important! Despite this, microfiber and flock cannot be subjected to heat treatment: dry on a radiator and iron. This is not necessary if there is no creasing.

Microfiber chair cover

Silk

Silk fabrics include: brocade, satin, crepe-satin. Their advantages are that they are durable, noble and resilient. Silk fabrics make it possible to create spectacular folds and draperies. There are also disadvantages: high price, demanding care and washing, gentle ironing. Such canvases are suitable for creating holiday covers in classical and neoclassical, Indian and Arabic styles.

Silk covers can emphasize the solemnity of the event

How to take measurements and make a pattern?

The first thing you need to do when sewing is to take measurements of the furniture. The pattern directly depends on the design and dimensions of the chair or stool. To take measurements, take material that holds its shape well and cover the chair with it, securing everything with pins. At this stage, they take into account: how much the legs of the chair will be covered, whether there will be fasteners on the back, and so on.

Luxury and functionality combine in brocade

Measurements can also be taken using tracing paper. To do this, a layer of paper is first applied to the seat and secured with pins. After this, a stroke is made along the contour. For allowances, add one and a half centimeters on each side. Subsequently, the parts are cut out. The back is measured in the same way if sewing is done for a chair.

For the front of the cape, measure the length of the legs and the width of the front edge of the product. After this, a given rectangle is drawn on tracing paper, adding 5 cm at the bottom and 10 cm at the sides. To all this add a 1.5 cm seam allowance at the top edge.

Practical and stylish capes

Patterns for the sides of the “skirt” are made in the same way. Add 15 cm to the edge adjacent to the outer part of the back. The pattern is made in several copies. Measuring the outer part of the backrest is done as follows:

  • A large sheet of tracing paper is applied to it at the top of the backrest;
  • The edges of the outer side are marked;
  • Lines are drawn along the legs to the floor;
  • Add 5 mi at the bottom and 1.5 cm for the seam allowance.

Translucent cape on the back

Important! Centers are marked at the top and bottom of the patterns, along which the fabric is then folded and cut into two even parts.

Transferring the pattern to fabric

The drawing is done on tracing paper in the section above. After it is ready, it is transferred to the fabric, taking into account the position of the lobe threads. Transfer can be done with pencils, soap or chalk. It is worth remembering that the pattern is made in two copies.

Measurements for the case

Step-by-step instructions on how to sew a cover for a chair with a backrest

You can order tailoring from purchased fabric from a craftsman, but it is much more profitable and enjoyable to do it yourself. The only caveat: all measurements must be accurate and take into account seam allowances and fabric shrinkage when washing. For this, one or one and a half centimeters should be enough.

Instructions for sewing a simple product

To get started, you need to prepare all the necessary materials and tools:

  • Threads and needles;
  • Sewing machine;
  • Adhesive tapes;
  • Scissors and awl.

Taking measurements from a standard chair

Step-by-step manufacturing instructions are as follows:

  • Make a pattern on tracing paper or film that will fit well on the furniture to take all measurements;
  • Cut out the seat from soft synthetic padding and make allowances of 1 cm at the edges and 3 cm at the back;
  • Attach the padding polyester to the seat and measure out the recesses for the legs at the back. Cut notches along the contour;
  • Determine the height of the cover and, leaving the bottom of the furniture open, measure the sides and back wall chair;

Case decorated with bows
  • Transfer the pattern to the selected material and cut it out, not forgetting to leave allowances for seams and shrinkage;
  • Round the corners on the sides for a better “seat” of the cover;
  • Sew all the parts together using a sewing machine. Make notches on the rounded edges to avoid wrinkles in the fabric;
  • Sew decorative elements in the form of braid or beads around the perimeter of the seat;
  • Try on a chair cover;
Case for children, decorated with a flower

Features of covers for high chairs

If the cover is made on high chair, then the most correct thing would be to make it from hypoallergenic types of cotton fabric that are durable and wear-resistant. This material is breathable and easy to wash. The fabric itself is quite cheap and it wouldn’t be a shame to throw away such a cover if it gets damaged by a little tomboy.

It is best to put a water-repellent cover on the high chair that will wash without problems. Since all furniture has its own design, you will have to take all measurements individually on a chair or on a standard cover.

Stool seats wear out quickly without a cover
  • Fold up the unstitched side and stitch it in any way;
  • Mark the places where seat belts should be located if necessary;
  • Decorate the product with bows, ruffles, ribbons or thermal appliqués.

Beautiful examples of cases

To expand the reader's creative potential, below are options for beautiful and elegant slipcovers that can restore any furniture to its former glory.

A colorful throwaway fabric can easily change the look of a simple bar stool.

Thus, the pattern for chair covers is not particularly complicated. Anyone, even a novice craftswoman, can do this and other stages of work. There are many styles of covers; they are divided into formal and everyday. Based on this, the material for manufacturing is selected, the availability decorative elements and other things.

Sewing chair covers with your own hands is fashionable again. This not only prolongs and saves furniture from unnecessary cleaning, extends the life of the new one and allows you to postpone the difficult and possibly expensive restoration of the old one until better times. By covering the furniture, it fits into the interior without great expense, and by changing the covers, you can change its accents according to the circumstances: a celebration, a visit of an important guest, just to suit your mood, according to the season, etc.

Style selection

The cover for a chair with a back makes a mark. Features:

  • Saving - protects from damage, hides flaws. Pos. 1 and 2 in Fig;
  • Accentuating – fits furniture into the interior, at the same time complementing and/or completing the concept of its design, poses 3-6;
  • Props, pos. 7 and 8 - takes on a leading role in the appearance of the interior, most often together with the tablecloth. This allows you to hide design flaws or obscure decisions that are inappropriate in the circumstances;
  • Decorative, pos. 9-11 - mainly at celebrations. In this case, universal covers (see below) make it possible to organize an extensive feast with “different-sized” chairs.

It is quite possible to sew covers for chairs that combine several of these functions, but then you should also be guided functional purpose case:

  1. Everyday and accent - made from durable, hygienic, easy to wash, clean and iron fabrics, see below.
  2. Prop - since they are not used every day, the requirements for durability and washability of the fabric are reduced, but in return, pomp and luxury are required, otherwise it is impossible to visually draw the main accent of the interior onto the table with chairs.
  3. Decorative - the main thing here is the possibility of catchy decoration at low cost, the cheapness of the fabric, its minimum capacity for fat and liquids and maximum washability if the covers are reusable, for example. rental It’s clear what the covers and the furniture under them can turn into after a wedding or anniversary if they get wet well.

About capes

Covers for kitchen chairs are often made in the form of simple protective covers, see fig. right. Make them conceptually accentuated with bows, decorative buttons (see at the end), floor-sweeping skirt, etc. accessories in this case are irrational. However, the kitchen also needs style with accents; especially if they are hosting guests. In this case, knitting will help out: knitted furniture covers are an unconditional sign of good taste, skill and wealth of the owners. Meanwhile, chair covers can be crocheted very simply from fragments without a pattern or the ability to knit at all, see next. video:

Video: DIY knitted chair covers

Which case goes where?

Let's look again at Fig. at the beginning with illustrations of cover styles. Chair covers for the kitchen are, by definition, energy-saving; their accents - what they will turn out to be. Building a cohesive design style for a kitchen that is cramped and cluttered with cooking equipment is oh so difficult. If the original concept or its material expression is incorrect, then the accents of the chairs will do little to correct it. Therefore, among the decorative elements for kitchen chair covers, short gathered skirts (anything can end up on the floor) are sufficient, with organza or tulle braid sewn onto the seam between them and the cover itself. This solution leaves enough room to vary the appearance of the kitchen by choosing fabric colors, poses. 1 and 2.

Decor of chairs in the living room, pos. 3-6, it is possible and even necessary to be more sophisticated, because in this place, the accentuating role of everyday covers is at least equivalent to a saving one. Therefore, firstly, the requirements for fabric for covers are changing, see below. Secondly, it is not advisable to make the cover skirt sweeping; between it and the floor there needs to be a gap of at least 2-3 cm, pos. 6.

The skirts of fake covers, on the contrary, should sweep across the floor and be made primarily with flounce. This is what draws the visual perception of the appearance of the interior to the chairs with the table, and the richer-looking fabric is a secondary factor here, positions 7 and 8.

For holiday covers, the main thing is an elegant and catchy applied decor, pos. 9-11, so the cut of the cover (see below) does not matter in this case. Moreover, for holiday chairs they often use unsewn so-called. semi-covers, when a piece of fabric is simply wrapped around a chair, with a decorative knot and drapery with folds. For more information on decorating chairs for the holiday, see the master class below.

Fabric selection

Woolen, half-woolen and viscose fabrics are unsuitable for chair covers; especially for everyday cases. The main reason is the allergenicity of wool. If there is at least one person in the house with a tendency to allergies, covers with wool will soon turn a potential allergy sufferer into a clinical one. In addition, wool warms well, which is not necessary for covers, but it is very difficult to clean and wash. For the same reasons, velvet, velor and dug velvet are undesirable for furniture covers.

Note: velvet, velor and dug velvet together are often simply called velvet or velor. A more precise division is as follows: velvet has a long pile, up to 1.5-2 cm. Velor has a shorter pile, up to 2-3 mm. Buried velvet is velor, the fibers of which are collected as if in beds.

The following fabrics are suitable for sewing chair covers:

  • Cotton, or simply cotton - linen, satin, twill, canvas, denim, cotton gabardine.
  • Linen - linen, canvas.
  • Silk - crepe-satin, silk gabardine, satin, brocade.
  • Synthetic clothing and furniture so-called. biflex, i.e. stretching equally along and across the lobar thread.
  • Synthetic furniture - flock, microfiber, with certain restrictions, see below

Cotton

Cotton fabrics are inexpensive, absolutely hypoallergenic, durable, and wash well. The main disadvantages are that they get wet instantly, and the paint on them fades from washing and exposure to light; a method for dyeing cotton once and for all has not yet been invented. Therefore, cotton furniture covers are unsuitable for interiors designed to maintain tone for years. Cotton canvas, satin and twill can be used for covers of children's chairs, if their seats and backs are waterproof and easy to clean, or if the covers have soft liners, see below. Cotton gabardine is a good choice for accent covers in the living room. Jeans and cotton canvas will be appropriate in country and rustic interiors, but in the latter case it is better to replace them with linen.

Flax

The main advantage of linen fabrics is their extraordinary durability and self-cleaning ability. In the old days, peasants wore linen portages for 10 years, given the backbreaking labor and unsanitary conditions of that time. Unfortunately, linen is difficult to dye, wash and iron. The texture of linen fabrics is rough. Ancient Egyptian craftswomen knew how to draw threads No. 200 (!) from linen yarn, but now this art has been completely lost. Linen chair covers will fit well into rustic interiors and are suitable for country furniture. Then once a year in the spring it is enough to wash them and hang them up to flutter in the wind for half a day, most of the folds will come apart.

Silk

Crepe satin is one of the the best materials for chair covers. It gets dirty a little, gets wet a little, and is easy to wash and clean. It stretches only slightly worse across the base than along it. Silk gabardine stretches almost evenly along and across; it also has all the other qualities of crepe-satin, but is somewhat more expensive. The satin is resistant and suitable for accent skirts in flounce and festive ones, because... holds creases well. But the satin seat and back of the cover will have to be cleaned frequently. Brocade is a material primarily used for prop cases; its heaviness enhances the accents of the case. It is not easy to clean, it cannot be ironed and cannot be washed, because... contains metal threads in the weave. The disadvantage of all silk fabrics, except brocade, is that they are too slippery; fidgeting on the chair will cause the cover to slide off.

Biflex

Almost all thin fabrics are woven with supplex furniture fabrics and stretch clothing - lycra, spandex. Based on their combination of qualities, they are suitable for any furniture covers, they are very resistant, easy to wash and clean, and do not get wet well. Spandex stretches in any direction, almost like rubber, and is used to make universal rental covers that can be put on any chair, see video:

Video: using universal covers for different chairs

However, in a consistent style interior, only covers made from furniture supplex would be appropriate. The reason is the same why Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus will not be allowed to sing at La Scala, even if they bought the hall for a year in advance: slacks are made from lycra and spandex, etc. provocatively tight pants.

Flock and microfiber

What these furniture fabrics have in common is that they draw dirt into the pile and therefore maintain their appearance for a long time without cleaning. Flock holds dirt less easily and can withstand several cleanings; it cannot be washed. Microfiber retains its appearance for up to 5 years, but cannot be cleaned or washed at all. The so-called flock and microfiber are used to sew. European covers for office chairs of the types Bizplastico, Domilfo, etc., see next. video:

Video: using European chair covers

Note: From flock and microfiber you can sew an inexpensive cover for a chair “to look like fur.” But, firstly, it is unlikely to last more than 3 years in the kitchen and 5 in the living room. Secondly, a guest can see the same “Mexican jerboa” in some office or, excuse me, in a prostitute’s lair, and draw a conclusion about the reputation of the owners.

Measurements and cutting

A diagram of chair measurements for constructing a pattern for a cover for it is given in pos. 1 rice; on pos. 2-4 – names of parts of the case. Letter designations sizes - standard (typical), you can find them on the patterns of covers, see below.

A cover for one chair requires 2-3 m of fabric, so cutting it, in order to save material, is done almost exclusively by straight cut, i.e. the warp threads of the fabric should run lengthwise from the apron through the seat and back into the yarn over, red arrows at pos. 2. But then, if cotton, linen or heavy natural furniture fabrics are used, for example. jacquard, the lobe on the ceremonies (side wings of the cover) will turn out to be horizontal hanging (blue arrow), and dips will form under the seat, which is clearly visible in pos. 2.

Supplex fabrics are free from this drawback, therefore, in the patterns of covers made from them, the apron with rituals are combined into a single skirt. In this case, it is possible to use an uneconomical, but giving effective folds, diagonal cutting, pos. 3. In covers made of natural fabrics, a smoothly sagging skirt is sewn separately. If the cover is made of crepe-satin, silk gabardine, satin, brocade and other silk fabric, the skirt can be tailored and sewn with a flounce, pos. 3. A shuttlecock made from supplex furniture fabrics will not be as impressive, and from lycra and spandex it won’t really work.

Note: In fact, the ideal material for a chair cover in all respects and almost eternal is synthetic canvas - Dacron, Mylar. There is only one drawback - the insane price.

About soft cases

Covers for hard chairs are often made with a soft liner. The ideal pocket material for it is linen. The pocket is sewn with an armhole without a fastener, in which a fold is made inward, like in a pillowcase for a pillow. It is better to cut the insert itself from furniture foam rubber with a density of 35-45 (grade 35-45) or synthetic felt. Sintepon and holofiber soon cake under the weight of the person sitting and cannot be washed.

Examples of patterns

All of the following patterns can be modified based on the measurements of your chairs, see above. The simplest chair cover is one-piece. Can be saving and accentuating; The height of the skirt can be changed arbitrarily. The pattern for the ties and bow is given on the left in Fig. How to modify it for a tie with an elastic band is shown on the right: the yarn over is cut in a wedge shape, expanding downward by 10 cm in both directions, and a drawstring for the elastic is sewn on the inside. The hem allowance is 2 cm, please note that there are none on the pattern! The disadvantage of this type of cutting is that there is a lot of fabric waste; covers are needed for all the chairs.

Pattern for the trail. rice. – cover for a kitchen chair. You may not have noticed, but the size of kitchen chairs is smaller than that of living rooms, as far as ergonomics allow. Modification for an elastic band - according to the same principle as in the previous one. case, see on the right in Fig.

Not all chairs have seats and backs with right angles. The pattern for cutting and sewing (from the inside out) of a cover for the seat of a kitchen chair with rounded corners is given on the left side of the trail. rice. The double crochet back is sewn to the flap at the top.

On the right in Fig. – a diagram for constructing a pattern of a cover for a “completely round”, for example, Viennese, living room chair and instructions for sewing it. However, using modern fabrics, a cover for a chair with a round seat and back can be cut directly on site and sewn more easily, see next. video tutorial

If a sweeping skirt is undesirable, then its height (the corresponding dimensions are highlighted in color) is reduced by 2-10 cm. In this case, cutting will be more economical, because Patterns for pairs of chairs can be placed on one section, mirrored horizontally.

Spanish experience

Spain has long been famous, among other things, for the art of decoration. Spanish decorators decorated the Louvre and Versailles, that means something. Therefore, below we provide Spanish versions of patterns for chair covers. You don't have to learn Spanish to understand them. Firstly, for those who have ever sewed anything, everything is already clear. Secondly, the inscriptions on the patterns and the explanations for them are not the original of Don Quixote; any online translator can easily cope with them. So, for starters, a pattern for a cape kitchen chair with a rounded back in Spanish:

The third option is a cover for a Viennese or rattan round chair on the patio, on the veranda or, in our opinion, on the dacha:

And finally, a pattern for a decorative cover with a flounce for a wedding; without heart appliqués - for any holiday:

A little about jewelry

Bows, ribbons, flowers, etc. Holiday decor is another theme. But as for chairs, we need to mention decorative buttons to decorate their covers: they should be larger than usual and not cut into the body of the person sitting.

Photo of DIY chair covers

The house should be beautiful and cozy. Each person has his own understanding of what is beautiful, so we furnish our homes differently, but always “to suit ourselves,” our mood and the tastes of our household members.

A cozy home for me is where you are welcome, where you can relax and gain strength, where it is clean and beautiful. In such a place, even the walls are healed, and harmony lives in the soul.

To get even closer to a corner where you can hide from your hectic life modern world, I propose to make textile covers for chairs.

As always, sewing begins with a pattern, which is what we’ll talk about in today’s master class. I hope you find it interesting.

To sew a chair cover , it is necessary to take several measurements, but first we need to decide what kind of cover we will sew. Covers come in:
- backrest
- seat
- back and seat

There are also different chair covers depending on the occasion. It all depends on the pattern and fabric you will sew from, as well as ribbons and other sewing accessories. Before you start work, you need to make a pattern, think about the reason for wearing the covers (holiday or for every day) and buy the right amount of fabric.

Making a pattern for the covers is quite simple, since most often chairs have straight sides, which can be easily measured and a schematic drawing made.

The easiest way to make a chair cover - This is to prepare two strips of fabric and fasten them with ties. The seams can be sewn, or you can leave them, but fasten them with another pair of ties in the front.

If you do not have the opportunity to sew a cover, then you can simply cut it out made of fabric whose edges do not fray, then the pattern of the cover will look like this.

Although you will still need to sew on the ties, this can be done without using a sewing machine.

The pattern for this chair cover is two different pieces. (pattern of the back cover and pattern of the seat cover). We sew a cover on the back, like a bag. The seat cover consists of two parts (seat and skirt) that are connected together. We fold the skirt at the corners. We fasten the cover to the chair with ties.

Chair cover with round seat (and rounded back) not much scarier than the previous pattern (even easier in some ways, because you don’t need to make folds on the skirt).

The schematic pattern of a cover for this type of chair consists of 4 main parts: a round seat, 2 parts of the back (long back and short front) and a skirt. To make the cover beautiful, it is proposed to sew triangular ties to it. If desired, these can be ribbons.

As you can see, making a pattern is not difficult. The main thing is to sew the cover so correctly that it looks beautiful.

Good luck!

Features of chair covers with backrest: not only beautiful, but also functional

A cover is not just clothing for your chair, but its second life. Sometimes sprucing up a worn-out piece of furniture is much cheaper than replacing or buying it, especially when the furniture is dear to your heart and brings back memories. Certainly, old chair You can paint it, but won’t it lose its uniqueness?

In this case, the case will hide all the imperfections without touching the most precious things - memories and original appearance. Modern furniture can also be updated using covers. For example, when a purchased pair of chairs does not at all match the new set in style or color scheme.

In addition, this is a great way to protect furniture from dirt or hide flaws in its assembly.

Classification of covers for chairs with backrest by type

If you think that there is nothing simpler than a chair with a backrest, you are very mistaken. Like any cape, furniture clothing can be different types and styles. With a complex structure, for example, drapery, hand finishing, or a simple and strict, tight-fitting chair.

Features of manufacturing tight-fitting covers

Such capes tightly fit the seat and back of the chair. Compared to human clothing, it's practically a turtleneck. For chair only. They can be made of stretch fabric and secured with ties and Velcro.
