Diablo from Blizzard Entertainment is rightfully considered an unattainable standard. A milestone, a model and Jupiter, which, one way or another, one has to follow. In the world of video games, there are several Patriarchs, which both game makers and the players themselves focus on. Therefore, often when describing, retelling the quality and style of play from word of mouth, one often hears general characteristics: “Like StarCraft,” “Like Civilization,” “Like Fallout,” “Like Doom,” and, of course, “Like Diablo.”
The Diablo series is considered by many to be the best RPGs of all time. However, there are some discrepancies here: aesthetes rightly insist that Diablo is an RPG in the click & slash style, because, let’s give the game its due, such an important thing as solving moral and social problems, as well as an extensive dialogue system, is absent in Diablo. From this point of view, the first two parts of Fallout should be considered an ideal RPG. However, no matter what anyone says, these two great games: Fallout 1 and 2, and Diablo 1 and 2, cannot be compared at all.
Let me note right away that for the author of these lines, Fallout ended with the collapse of Black Isle and the subsequent release of a misunderstanding in the form of Fallout 3. Diablo for the author ended when the old generation left Blizzard and a new one came, which began experimenting with donations, online stores and constant connection to the Internet. As a result, the game turned almost into an MMORPG.
What died in Diablo 3? What was alive in Diablo 1 and 2? The first two parts were adult games. Games made by serious adults for smart, decent, adult players. Those games had a viscous, oppressive atmosphere and an amazing cult of weapons. You could spend a lot of time fascinatingly comparing the characteristics of weapons, armor, amulets and rings. In Diablo 3, almost nothing of what was left remains. It was made by the same adults, serious people. But they did it only to make money. There's not enough talent in the game. Everything is very high-class, but it’s clear that no one bothered to put their soul into the third part. It’s like a joke from the heart, said by a cheerful person in a warm company, and a mathematically clearly verified joke, specially invented by a scientist-philosopher. Everything is cool, but there is no drive. Besides, Diablo 3 was made for children and their consoles. The atmosphere disappeared, as did the cult of weapons.
However, this does not stop idolaters. Diablo clones have been made and are being made. Exact quantity They are very difficult to install. And there is no need. Some fairly high-quality clones such as Nox, Dungeon Siege or Divine Divinity are unlikely to interest anyone due to moral and, most importantly, technical obsolescence. Therefore, for those who like Diablo, but for those who already know it inside and out, we offer a short tour of the most famous more or less high-quality Diablo clones, which can be run on modern operating systems of modern computers without any noticeable problems. Let's go.
Sacred 1, 2.
This game was made by the German studio Ascaron. Many consider the first part of Sacred to be the best Diablo clone. In Sacred there is a change in the time of day; hints of this innovation appeared only in Diablo 2, when the sun set in Lut Gholein. In addition, in the German Diablo Clone it was possible to use a mount and shuffle skills, finishing off enemies with a whole series of different blows. The graphics of the game, released in 2004, look quite good today. Sacred is quite rightly considered the best Diablo clone. However, even this unofficial title does not deprive the game of a lot of shortcomings. Firstly, Sacred has a completely different atmosphere: green grass, colorful monsters, bright sun - all this is not at all what we saw in Diablo. Secondly, despite the large and relatively open world, the locations in Sacred were monotonous, and monsters were constantly generated, making the second half of the game very tiring. Sacred passed, as a rule, by inertia. Thirdly, the huge amount of weapons and equipment that was in Diablo was not even close to that in Sacred.
Sacred 2 was released in 2008. The world of the game became many times larger, and the game itself turned from hand-drawn to three-dimensional. The style of passing has also changed. Sacred 2 has more dialogues and more story tasks. It became possible to make a character “good” or “evil”. In general, the second part became like a real role-playing game. She became no worse, she just became different. The spirit of Diablo has completely disappeared.
Sacred 3 is a cheap craft that would be more suitable for mobile devices. Do not under any circumstances buy this game. In it, the heroes don’t even have inventory, not to mention other bullying from the new developers who cheated.
Those who do not agree that Sacred is the best Diablo clone are confident that only Titan Quest has the right to claim this title. The author, by the way, has the same opinion. This game is even more similar to Diablo, with the only exception that its plot is based on the myths of Ancient Greece. The whole thing is developing somewhere on the shores of Hellas with the appropriate landscapes: beaches, sea, colorful boats. I want to lie down on the hot sand and drink cocktails, and not fight monsters. The game was released in 2006 and still looks great today. Especially if you run it not on widescreen monitors. WITH open world there were certain problems here, just like in Diablo. The hero moves strictly forward, periodically going into branches. After his death, he was reborn in nearby fountains. Things were already better here with the cult of weapons. The developers managed to make the game addictive with their promises that they are about to give a new weapon, that they are about to give new armor, after the next boss falls at the hero’s feet. The game, by the way, was made by the same person who created the first part of Age of Empires. So you can feel the atmosphere.
But things didn't work out with Titan Quest 2. The game was canceled in 2012. Nothing more was heard from her, which is a pity.
Tourchlight 1, 2.
Another game that really wanted to be like Diablo. However, despite a considerable army of fans, cloning was not very successful, although in a number of cases, for example in the structure of the interface, the game is simply a complete copy of Diablo. The first part of Tourchlight was released in 2009. Essentially it's the same click-&-slash game, but it looks like an MMORPG from somewhere in Korea. Cartoon graphics, a completely inexpressive inventory with small item icons, a riot of colorful special effects, the arcade movement of the hero, when after taking two steps he ran a distance of five steps, pop-up damage numbers and much more do not allow us to recommend Tourchlight to all fans of the first two parts of Diablo.
Tourchlight 2, which was released in 2012, looks more interesting. But the console arcade feel still hasn’t gone away, as have the pop-up damage coefficients that spoil everything. The picture has become less cartoonish, but instead of some of the originality of the first part, it has turned into an almost exact copy of DotA 2. Therefore, if someone tells you that Tourchlight is an excellent replacement for Diablo, do not believe it. It's just a decent, but completely separate game.
By the way! While we have not gone far from Tourchlight, the same can be said about such games as Victor Vran and The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 1, 2 and 3. The first project was completed by the Bulgarians, the second by the Hungarians. And if the first is complete mediocrity, then the second, presented in a whole series, is a completely worthy game. However, other than the click&slash mechanics itself, there is nothing else in it that would make it similar to Diablo. At the same time, the developers of Van Helsing did not try to be in any way similar to a clone of the famous game from Blizzard, while the developers of Victor Vran, on the contrary, declared even before the release that this was our Bulgarian answer to Metelitsa.
It would be possible to talk more about the three parts of Dungeon Siege, but the first two are already quite outdated morally, and the third turned out to be too experimental and was not a complete success. A lot could be said about Grim Dawn, but the game, despite its two years of age, is still in early access, although it is beautifully made, and all Diablo fans would definitely like it. Instead, we will focus a little on MMO projects, fortunately, among them there are also quite decent candidates.
The very first part Diablo was published at the end of the distant 1996, and since then the army of its fans has been steadily growing every year, and new parts do not disappoint gamers. Having become an undoubted hit and one of the most significant games of the past century, Diablo inspired dozens of clones and imitations from game developers.
