Measure the curtains. How long should the tulle be? The use of short curtains and their main advantages

When finishing a renovation, people inevitably approach the stage of decorating a room with various accessories that make the room truly residential, warm and comfortable. Among decorative elements curtains are basic and require increased attention. First of all, it is necessary to find an answer to the question: how long should curtains be in order to fit perfectly into the design and interior?

Curtain length: special moments

In order for the window opening to look aesthetically pleasing, and for the overall impression of being in the room to be extremely positive, it is necessary to remember that curtains have a certain length, which depends on the purpose of the room and the style chosen as the main one.

It is also important that curtains largely determine such indicators of comfort as:

  • indoor microclimate;
  • amount of sunlight;
  • privacy.

Tastefully chosen curtains can tell more about a person than he thinks, since harmony in the home is a sign of good upbringing, having your own style and outlook on life. The length of the curtains and their style are also inextricably linked - small summer curtains for the kitchen cannot be lower than the window sill, and classic curtains from the Victorian era can reach half the window. That is why it is very important to know what the length of the curtain should be even before purchasing the fabric.

Length: positive and negative sides

It’s no secret that each length chosen for curtains will have its own positive aspects and negative aspects. Curtains that are too short will create a cozy atmosphere, but will not protect from the sun or prying eyes; flowing, long curtains are designed to become part of a private environment, but due to the fact that they often literally lie on the floor, they need frequent washing or dry cleaning. Meanwhile, correctly calculating the length of the curtain is not as difficult as it might seem.

Today it is customary to divide it into 4 main groups:

  • long curtains with a floor space of up to 6 cm;
  • floor-length curtains with a margin of up to 20 cm;
  • curtains of medium length (up to the window sill);
  • small curtains, the length of which is a quarter of the entire surface of the window opening.

The first option is considered the most common and popular today, as it is practical to use and visually looks great in most rooms. The bottom of curtains of this length practically does not get dirty, which allows cleaning the room. The disadvantage is the visual reduction in height, which does not allow choosing it in apartments with low ceilings.

It is best to choose the first and second length options if the ceiling height is not lower than 2.5 meters.

Floor-length curtains should be classics that are attractive and relevant. This length visually increases the height of the ceilings. However, if you want to sew them yourself, problems may arise. Curtains, bottom part which lies on the floor, are ideal for the bedroom or living room. At correct selection fabrics easily create an atmosphere of comfort and luxury. Meanwhile, there is also a minus, which is that numerous folds are prone to dust accumulation, so it may be difficult to clean the room.

Choosing curtains to the window sill allows you to indent a few centimeters up or down from the middle of the window. Such curtains are most often used for decoration in the kitchen, dining room or bathroom if it has a window opening. Such curtains are practical to use, which is positive thing choice, but they are inferior to long curtains in beauty and visual effect.

When determining the length of the curtains, it is necessary to take into account the use of accessories, for example, garters, which will slightly reduce it. If you leave long curtains just lying on the floor, they can lose their attractiveness or quickly become dirty.

Short curtains, on the contrary, have many visual advantages: they allow you to create an atmosphere of coquetry and romance. In addition, sewing them yourself will require a little fabric, and the difficulties in working will be minimal. Such curtains are less dirty, so they are ideal for the kitchen or country house. They allow air to pass through perfectly, so they can become part of natural ventilation in the bedroom. Children will not be able to paint them, so they will also become good option window decor. It must be taken into account that average length can slightly visually reduce the height of the room, so they should not be made of dense, dark materials.

How to correctly calculate the length: features and nuances of measurements

The length of future curtains determines the overall mood of the room, so calculations should be approached with all responsibility. In order to make all measurements correctly and purchase required material in sufficient quantities so that you do not have to rush to purchase the missing quantity, you need to consistently perform several simple but very important actions:

  • first, the total distance from the floor to the cornice where the curtains will be fixed is measured;
  • second, take into account the density of the fabric;
  • third, consider the methods and types of curtain fastening.

The distance from the floor to the cornice is the basic number, to which you should add or subtract a few centimeters, taking into account other indicators. So the fastening, be it eyelets or loops, requires adding to the obtained values or reducing them by 2-10 cm. Depending on the density of the material, they also add up to 4 cm for allowances in the upper and lower parts of the future curtain, in general it can be up to 8 cm

If the curtains are the length of the floor, then, on the contrary, you should subtract 1 cm, if at a distance from it - minus 5-6 cm, but if directly on the floor, then you will need to add up to 20 cm. short curtains the same manipulations are carried out, but the main reference point is not the floor or cornice, but the window sill.

Often the evenness of the floor, ceiling, window sill or window opening is far from ideal, therefore, in order not to make mistakes in the calculations and get the ideal result, you will need to take measurements at at least 5 points.

It is also important not to forget that the purchase of fabric should be made with a reserve in order to ensure that mistakes are avoided or if there is a desire to slightly change the style, you will not have to purchase additional material. Don't forget about the lining. This part of the curtain pulls the main material a little, so the margin is necessary in order to end up with a beautiful curtain.

Thus, a lot depends on the length, so you should approach its measurements carefully, take your time and take into account all the nuances and features. They can be distinguished from the style of the curtains and the desired length of the future product. It is important to remember that no matter the length, the accuracy and quality of the measuring work will guarantee that a person will receive a curtain that will become a real decoration of any room.

Before you start sewing curtains at home, you need to choose the model of the future product and calculate how much fabric will be needed.

Measurements needed to calculate fabric consumption for sewing curtains

  • The first (L) is the length of the cornice, which is measured using a measuring tape or a folding meter;
  • The second (H) is, in fact, the length of the future curtain. The size of this measurement depends on the length of the curtain (the curtain can be up to the floor, up to the window sill, ¾ of the height of the wall, etc. - i.e. it completely depends on your taste, imagination, as well as the style of your room). The size of this measurement is also influenced by the type of cornice and the method of processing the top of the curtain. You must immediately determine how you will process the top of the curtain - whether it will be curtain braid, or hanging thread loops, or large fabric loops. By default, this measurement is taken from the top edge of the cornice.

How to calculate fabric consumption for sewing curtains

To find out the width of the curtain, you need to multiply the first measurement (length of the cornice) by 1.5 - 3.5 and add 10 cm for processing the seams. You may ask what does “1.5 - 3.5” mean and how do you determine which number to multiply by?

“1.5 - 3.5” is the coefficient of gathering (pomp) of the curtain. The size of the assembly factor depends on the density of the fabric and the type of future curtain.

Remember a simple rule:

  • if you are sewing curtains from very thin fabric: organza, organdie, voile, mesh, etc. without a pattern, you will need fabric width three and a half times the length of the cornice,
  • for medium-weight fabrics: chiffon, tulle, thin fabrics with a pattern - two and a half times more,
  • for dense fabrics: velvet, taffeta, linen, gabardine - one and a half to two times.

You can also determine the curtain assembly factor using the following table:

To determine the length of the curtain, you need to add 10-15 cm to the second measurement (curtain length) for processing.

So, let's summarize:

Curtain width
  • for thin-density fabrics: L x 3.5 + 10 cm = fabric width;
  • for medium-density fabrics: L x 2.5 + 10 cm = fabric width;
  • for dense fabrics: L x 1.5 + 10 cm = fabric width;
Curtain length
  • H + 15 cm = fabric length

The width of the roll for most tulle fabrics is 2 meters 80 cm. Knowing this measurement, it is now easy for you to calculate the footage of the fabric being collected, provided that the height of the future curtain does not exceed the width of the roll minus the edge.

The width of a roll of curtain fabrics varies: 1 meter 40 cm, 2 meter 80 cm and 3 meters. If the length of the future curtain fits into the width of the roll, then the fabric consumption is calculated as described above.

If the width of the fabric turns out to be smaller than the height of the future product (i.e. curtains), then we calculate the fabric consumption differently: we will sew the fabric from several fabrics. The number of canvases is directly proportional to the gathering factor and fabric pattern.

For fabrics with a repeating pattern (rapport), it is necessary to take into account additional seam allowances for fitting, i.e., give an additional increase of one pattern repeat on each panel. When stitching the panels, the curtain pattern must match exactly.

Many people guess that the curtains play decisive role in the interior, giving it completeness and organicity. However, in this matter, not only the style of the curtains is important, but their length. In the photo you can clearly see that curtains of different lengths look completely different, each time giving the rooms playfulness, mystery, or solemnity, depending on its functional purpose.

It is also worth noting that the question of what the correct length of curtains should be is very controversial. This option will always depend on your desires and tastes, but options that are especially in demand in modern interiors, will be discussed below.

Common options

Most often, to design a window opening in different rooms curtains used in apartments:

  • floor-length;
  • lying on the floor (approximately 20 centimeters);
  • slightly above the floor (2-6 centimeters).

Curtains to the floor are classic version, which simply cannot lose its relevance. Curtains of this length always look elegant and aesthetically pleasing, and with them the ceiling height visually increases somewhat. But if you want to sew curtains exactly to the floor yourself, then be prepared to face some difficulties. The main difficulty here is that ceilings are almost never completely flat, so the height of the canvas can vary.

Curtains lying on the floor will add special softness and grace to the interior. This option is ideal for formal, elegant living rooms and cozy bedrooms. However, we should not forget that this curtain design is not good for everyone. Firstly, such long curtains require a lot of fabric. Secondly, this style is not acceptable if there are animals in the house. And thirdly, dust will accumulate in the draperies, so if you do not have the opportunity to frequently vacuum and wash the curtains, it is better to choose a different option.

The most popular today are curtains whose height is a few centimeters from the floor level. Sewing such curtains yourself is also quite difficult, since taking measurements requires the highest precision and skill. Remember also that this length of curtains somewhat reduces the height of the ceilings.

In the photo you can see another interesting and unusual option, ideal for the kitchen or bathroom - curtains up to the window sill. To make such curtains look beautiful when spread out, it is recommended to use some additional accessories: tiebacks, stylish holders, etc.

How to calculate length

To measure yourself correct length curtains and calculate the amount of material that will be needed to sew them, follow the following steps sequentially:

  • measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling;
  • subtract two to three centimeters for the cornice;
  • add a few centimeters on both sides for allowances.

If you want the curtains to lie elegantly on the floor, add a couple more tens of centimeters to the length of the material, and if you want the curtains to be slightly higher than the floor, subtract a few centimeters. Taking into account possible irregularities ceiling surface, take measurements in several places, and also purchase curtain fabric with a small margin.

Remember, in creating a single interior composition, the length of the curtains is no less important than their style or color, so be careful when choosing correct sizes serious but creative. Don’t forget also about the lining and various decorative accessories that will give the window decoration even more comfort and grace.

But also with the size of the panel, which is sometimes much more difficult. Correctly sized curtains can highlight all the advantages of the room, while too wide, long or short can ruin even the most ideal and stylish room. Therefore, before going to the store for curtains or when buying fabric for them, you need to clearly know what size curtains you will need.

We take measurements

Naturally, the process of determining optimal sizes curtains begins with taking the necessary measurements. So, the main data that we need to obtain is the width and length of the future curtains, and all other data, type of assembly, etc., are then calculated based on these data.

It is worth noting that it is worth taking measurements already after the cornice has been selected and installed. , can be attached to a wall or ceiling, but in any case, the length of the cornice must exceed the width of the window. If there is another room for relaxation, then you can attach a cornice to the entire width of the walls, effectively emphasizing the window area. In other rooms, the cornice should be 20-30 cm larger than the window opening so that the curtains can move, clearing the way sun rays, the exception is where, as a rule, only translucent ones hang, and the length of the cornice is almost the same as the width of the window. Please note that there are now curtain rods with adjustable length: if desired and necessary, they can be made a little shorter or longer.

It is, of course, desirable before taking measurements, already decide on the curtain model, since the calculation of the length and width of the required fabric will depend on the type of fabric, fastening, and number of layers of window decoration.

  • The width of the curtains can be measured tape measure or soft measuring tape from the first fastening to the last.
  • Curtain length is measured from the cornice or from selected fastening elements, for example, rings, to the mark you need.

Determining the width of the curtain

So, we measured the distance from the left hook to the right, but the resulting figure does not mean the required width of the curtain, because in this case it will only hang freely. In the vast majority of cases it is necessary drapery, but how lush and voluminous it will be depends on the nuances of the individual room.

It is worth noting in advance that you need to be especially careful with drapery:

Remember that this rule works regardless of how many panels are used to decorate the window - one or two. But in the latter case, another 15 cm is added to the calculated length of the curtains so that the curtains can overlap each other when closed, creating a spectacular darkening.

Many years of experience of curtain sewing experts gave us the basis to develop approximate values of the width of the fabric depending on the length of the cornice. You can use the rule described above, or you can take into account the following data:

As a rule, the size of the room and windows is proportional, so such simple tips and calculations will help you without unnecessary problems determine the desired width of curtains to make the room look neat and comfortable.

Please note that sometimes The width of the curtains depends on the selected models. So, for example, abundant draperies are appropriate for translucent curtains, but on massive thick curtains there should be folds, but they may be less voluminous, so here you should rely on your own taste, or use verified data on the gather factor for each type of fabric.

So, for curtain fabric this coefficient is 1.7, for a veil and organza with a pattern - 2, and for thin organza without a pattern - 3.

Width and length of Roman blinds

Lambrequin width corresponds to the length of the cornice, so if you decide to decorate the window with a similar element, then it will be unnecessary to use any correction factors and carry out additional calculations.

Width of Roman, roller, Japanese curtains

It is worth mentioning separately such types of curtains as Roman, roller, Japanese blinds and other similar structures. Roller blinds and Roman blinds are usually placed directly in window opening, therefore their width corresponds to the width of the window, measured from bead to bead. Sometimes roller blinds placed on the wall above the window, then their width should be 10-15 cm larger than the window opening, completely covering the window and extending slightly beyond the boundaries in order to hide residents from the rays of light as much as possible.

Width they are chosen exactly according to the width of the window opening, and Japanese curtains, consisting of many panels, can extend far beyond the window, or can cover only the transparent part without going beyond its boundaries. It all depends on the design decision and features of the room, its area, etc.

Determining the length of the curtain

The length of the curtains is an even more important parameter than their width. Here you need not only to measure everything correctly, but also to imagine in advance, what length of curtains would be more appropriate?. The choice depends on the functional purpose of the room, as well as on its features: area, height, lighting, etc. If this is the case, then long curtains may be inappropriate, with the exception of translucent tulle with vertical stripe. In the kitchens in most cases, long curtains are also not suitable: they will interfere and clutter up the already predominantly cramped rooms. But if the kitchen is spacious, and there are a lot of windows near free space, no stove or sink, located dining area, then you can experiment with floor-length curtains. Rooms such as bedroom and living room, require the use of long curtains that will cover the entire window opening and fall to the floor.

So, once you have decided where the curtains will end, it's time to take measurements. Measure the length from the eaves to the floor or to, or to any necessary point. Please note that you need to think through the curtain fastening system in advance, and if these are hooks or rings, then you will need to measure the length of the curtains from them, and not from the cornice.

In and bedrooms Many experts recommend choosing the length of the curtains so that there is still 3-4 cm left to the floor - for reasons of comfort and convenience. If the window decoration consists of from several layers, That curtains should be several centimeters longer than curtains to completely cover their edge.

Many apartments cannot boast of a flat floor or ceiling, in which case it is better to curtain length measurements on the left, right and in the middle, then use either the average or the maximum value depending on the deviation present.

Even if you are planning to choose for a room curtains to the floor, it is better to follow the practice of professional seamstresses and measure distance from the eaves to the window sill and from the window sill to the floor. When you come to the store and start choosing a specific model, there is a high probability that you will like cascading curtains, with tiebacks or other elements. In this case, you will know exactly all the parameters of your window opening.

Lambrequin length it can be anything: it all depends on your preferences and the interior features of the room.

If you are buying fabric for making curtains, then to the obtained data on length and width you need to add 5 cm, which will be spent on bending and processing.

Eat curtain models that lie effectively on the floor: if you want to hang the same ones at your place, then add another 20-50 cm to the measured length to form a spectacular wave.

If you want to sew curtains yourself and choose patterned fabric, and the curtains, for example, will consist of two parts, then you need to correctly combine the pattern. If the pattern is repeating, then you need to measure that part of it that is constantly duplicated. For example, it will be 70 cm, and we add the resulting result to the final value of the fabric length.

Another important point: Now widespread artificial fabrics, which are very durable in use and almost do not shrink when washed, so if you want to sew curtains from them, you should not make any additional allowances for shrinkage. If the fabric is in stock more than 60% natural fibers, then the likelihood that it will shrink a little after washing increases, so In this case, the fabric is taken with a reserve- about 10%. If you want the window to be decorated with original and unique curtains that are not available in the store, then you need to buy required quantity fabrics for sewing them. So, how much fabric will be needed for curtains and drapes for our conditional window?

Standard roll width semi transparent tulle is 2.8 m, which should be quite enough for standard height windows, so the length issue remains resolved. As for the width, for a given window width and the selected CS, 2 * 2 = 4 m of fabric will be required. But since 5 cm is left for allowances on the sides, the resulting amount of fabric will be 4.1 m.

Width of curtain fabric, as a rule, is 1.4, 2.8 or 3.0 meters. It’s good if the width of the canvas ideally matches the length of the window opening, but it may be that the width is not enough, and then you will have to measure the fabric lengthwise and use several canvases to cover the window opening. Here it is important not to forget about the combination of the pattern and the length of the repeat - a repeating element of the ornament. In this case, you can sew a special fabric together, or maybe just make curtains from two parts.

The calculation in this case will be like this:

amount of fabric = ((window opening height + allowance)*number of panels) + repeat * (number of panels – 1)

If the window width is 2 m and KS = 2, and the width of the fabric in the roll is 1.4 m, then to make curtains, for example, you will need 3 canvases: 1.4 * 3 = 4.2 m, with a repeat value of 0.35 m we get the following data:

amount of fabric = ((2.7+0.2)*3)+0.35*2=9.4 m

If after cutting the fabric and sewing the curtains there will be leave a lot of fabric, and this may be when it was selected large drawing, then from the leftovers you can sew tiebacks for curtains or small pillows for the sofa. When the curtains and other textiles in the room are made in the same style, this gives a special effect to the room.

It’s easy to sew the most common curtain models yourself, but if you doubt your professionalism or are planning to decorate a window with an elaborate model, then it’s better to resort to the services of specialists.

In conclusion

The length and width of curtains are important parameters for window decoration, which need to be given no less importance than fabric, pattern and color. A correctly selected size will decorate the room and make it more comfortable, so before you go to the store for ready-made curtains or fabric for them, you need to take all the necessary measurements from the window opening, write them down and then base your choice on them.

Curtains, blinds or curtains are interior items that perform several functions in a room, but their length, width (and even thickness) depend not only on their purpose. And to determine the size of curtains correctly, you need individual approach, even in standard solutions.

Window curtains

Before taking on meters and centimeters, we must first determine for which room we are choosing a curtain. Of course, in any of them (be it a bedroom, children's room, kitchen or living room) window curtains perform the same functions:

  • protect from outside light;
  • protected from views from the street;
  • decorate or complement the interior and exterior of the house.

At the same time, the destination must be taken into account in order to choose the right material for curtains. For example, for a children's room and kitchen it is better to use smooth-textured synthetic fabrics - the material is not easily soiled and is easy to clean.

When selecting texture and color, a decorator, artist or interior designer may not be needed. Especially when the room has been furnished for a long time, and curtains are purchased to update its interior decoration.

It’s easy to learn the basic rules for selecting interior elements on your own. For example, the basic color principle says: to warm tones For wallpaper, artistically plastered or painted walls, fabrics are selected in warm colors, and for cold ones - cold tones. In particular, if the curtains are matched in color, but are 1 - 2 tones (on the color scale) darker than the wallpaper, they will bring a little more homely warmth and comfort to the room. It’s even better if the width of the curtains allows you to leave soft folds on their surface, even when the windows are completely closed.

Curtains of a color contrasting with the wallpaper visually reduce the space of the room. The same color as the wallpaper does not affect the visual perception of the cubic capacity and is suitable for small rooms. If you need to bring a wall with a window closer, then bright curtains in rich colors (preferably warm colors) will be successful. If you need to move it away, then you should select:

  • lighter colors;
  • cold tones.

When photo wallpaper or wall paintings are used in the room, or the walls are decorated in different colors, then the curtains should be selected to match the main background of the interior.

Technical nuance: Before calculating the length of the curtains, strengthen the curtain rod above the window. The optimal distance from the top edge of the window opening to the cornice is 7.5 - 12.5 cm. In order to effectively move the curtains apart and allow in or block out external light, the cornice strip should protrude 15 - 20 cm along the side edges of the window.

Room

The room can be intended for receiving guests, for relaxation (bedroom), for work (study/office) or be universal - an office-bedroom; studio-living room; kitchen-dining room. In any case, when choosing fabric and calculating the size of curtains, the considerations will be the same for all listed rooms.

Meters

How long the curtains should be in the room is determined based on the size of the windows; ceiling height or distance from the floor to the rail (curtain rod) plus or minus the size of the fabric clips. To ensure accuracy in cm, it is better to use a tape measure with a rigid centimeter tape or a meter ruler.

There are several standard options for window decoration. design solutions by length:

  • to the windowsill;
  • below the windowsill;
  • to the floor;
  • to the floor with a margin.

In the latter case, a margin of 5–25 cm is usually recommended for a large tulle curtain (such as a fishing net). The length “Up to the window sill” is good for simple chintz curtains, without a pattern. At the same time, openwork trim around the edges or openwork structure of the entire mini-curtain will look good. Such solutions are appropriate in a studio or living room decorated in the original Art Deco or Country style.

Overall, most versatile for standard apartment with standard windows the size is 200x260 cm. This “standard” equally applies to transparent and thick curtains. A width of 260 cm can be combined if two curtains of 130 or a combination of three are used, for example 100+80+80 cm.

If the width of the windows is about or more than 3 meters, then it is often recommended to use two thick curtains standard width 200 cm. As a rule, it is recommended to use one tulle curtain for a room window. In this case, a margin of width is recommended, in particular for a 3-meter window the width can be 3.3 - 3.6 m. Second option: two tulle curtains 180 - 200 cm wide.

Styles

For rooms in a minimalist style (plain wallpaper, some laconic furniture, a simple floor covering), blinds or roller shutters are more suitable than soft fabric products. At the same time, fabric curtains (including classic ones) are not excluded, and a soft, medium- or coarse-mesh tulle curtain selected in color gives a special coziness to minimalist interiors warm shade. Photo 1 shows an interior in a minimalist style, but with a fabric solution for windows. Such solutions (laconism rather than minimalism) are typical for Scandinavian-style rooms.

Curtains in a minimalist interior

Baroque, Rococo, Victorian abundance and respectability of the interior will be successfully complemented by heavy curtains with fringe and flounces - either alone or in combination with openwork tulle (see photo 2). Dimensions usually do not go beyond specific standards: 200x260 cm; 220x200 and 260x180 (for rooms with high ceilings). In a double combination, tulle and curtains are selected to match the prevailing shades in the interior, in particular, for a white ceiling - white tulle, for pink walls - wine-red curtains.

Baroque curtains in the fireplace room

Rustic Country style (Provence) with large windows welcomes solutions of a complex cut with drapery, tassels and floor length (see photo).

Curtains in the Provence style living room

For small-format windows, white curtains with a simple relief (white or light embroidery) or perforated pattern are suitable. The size of the curtain is selected according to the width of the window opening with a minimum margin (5 - 7 cm), and the length can be either the floor of the window or the entire height of the window opening.

Curtains of the same color, but several tones lighter or darker, for example, light pink and fuchsia, will harmoniously fit into an interior decorated in smooth lines; azure and sky blue, green and aquamarine, gray and silver. Wood-trimmed walls will be successfully complemented by cognac color.

The pattern applied to the curtains can match the wallpaper pattern (like a tie matches a shirt), or it can create contrast. Both are accepted, depending on the overall interior style. Tan with sparkles and mother-of-pearl will fit well into a Baroque interior with its bronze and golden stucco molding. Geometric patterns on curtains will successfully complement the same figures on the walls, but you should not strive for commensurability. Large (10x10 and even 15x15 cm) figures on the fabric will successfully complement small centimeter squares, triangles, circles in the wallpaper design. There are several options for this contrast:

  • large figures on fabric and medium or large ones on the wall;
  • small or medium – large or medium;
  • small – medium or small.

All of them will create their own mood, and you need to choose either according to your taste or on the recommendation of a design specialist.

Kitchen, children's room, bathroom

It is known that the size of curtains is influenced by the habits of the users of the room and (or) the purpose of the room itself, that is, the microclimate. Special microclimate and additional requirements All interior materials in any apartment, any house are different from the kitchen, children's room and bathroom or adjacent bathroom.

Kitchen space

As you know, the kitchen is a room in which we move more actively than in the bedroom or, for example, in the living room. The second nuance is the cleanliness of the air - even if there is effective hood, kitchen fumes occur. The third circumstance that affects the size of the curtains is the presence of an open fire (though only when the stove is in close proximity to the windows). According to the conditions, kitchen curtains should be:

The length of kitchen curtains should not be lower than the window sill, or even only half the window. The width of the transparent tulle must be selected according to the width of the window. The width of dense, light-protective fabric is selected individually (as well as its color). As a rule, 200 cm is enough, but options are possible, for example, “100+100 cm”; "120+120"; “70+70”, etc.

Children's

Children, as you know, move more actively than adults, and are more careless when using curtains than their parents and grandparents. Therefore, shorter formats that are easier to use are welcome in the children's room:

  • to the windowsill;
  • 3 – 10 cm below the window sill;
  • 2 - 5 cm above the floor.

Children sometimes use window curtains as sanitary napkins or towels. Accordingly, you should choose a colored material (even better - with a pattern that masks possible stains); of course, it must match hygienic requirements for children's premises.

If the window is a little over a meter wide, the width of the tulle curtain can be strictly the size of the window or 10–30 cm larger. For light-protective curtains, the dimensions are selected with sufficient margin. Practice shows that the “adult” standard of 200x260 cm is often suitable for a children’s room.

Bathroom/WC

Windows in the bathroom are quite rare, but if they are, then curtains are usually needed in the same way as in other rooms. The air in the bathroom is different high humidity, which is why the curtain material should be non-hygroscopic (preferably) and resistant to rotting. Synthetic fabrics in light colors are welcome, preferably warm, if the bathroom is cool, and bright, cold colors when coolness is needed.

The height and width of the window in the bathroom rarely exceeds 1 meter, so you can’t really go wild with the size of the curtains here. Of course, there are also larger windows in the bathroom, but in any format, the width should completely cover the window opening, and the length of the curtains can be any - from “Floor-length” to “Window-length”.

The rules for selecting curtains by color and pattern are the same as for ordinary rooms(see above). It is also appropriate to use something like a roller blind, which usually goes very well with tiled walls.

In conclusion, it should probably be recalled that long curtains both decorate the interior and effectively hide the shortcomings of the window opening.

Please note: very often curtains are quite large in size, so they add a very noticeable accent to the interior. In other words, they can both enrich and minimize the style of the entire room.
