Promising varieties of table grapes

Agronomist Edgars Zikhmanis.

ButWinkyviticulture. At Vinogu dārzs in Kronjauc, 50 varieties of new generation grapes have been tested. They were obtained as a result of complex 20-year selection work, through crossing European and Amur grape species, which were created by Russian and Ukrainian breeders. The results are excellent! The fruits of the newly created hybrids are large, about 4 cm in diameter, and the pulp is dense, with thin skin, juicy and fleshy. Individual clusters reach 2 kg in weight. The vine is quite resistant to diseases and its winter hardiness ranges from - 22 °C to - 29 °C. These varieties, in comparison with old European varieties, do not require thinning of the flowering bunch and, most importantly, the fruits ripen much faster!

Our goal is to introduce readers to new grape varieties that are most suitable for Latvian conditions and to grow them in different regions Latvia, in order to identify promising varieties through long-term observations. Grape varieties are divided according to the method of consumption as follows - table, seedless (including table), wine, universal.

Diseases

Like all other plants, this delicious berry is also susceptible to various diseases that can be prevented by spraying. For example, diseases such as affect foliage, the leaf becomes speckled with white. You can get rid of it by spraying with colloidal sulfur.

The mystery of Sharov.

The variety “Sharov’s Mystery” was obtained by the Siberian amateur breeder R.F. Sharov in 1972 and has unprecedented frost resistance (-32 -34). It is especially good for beginner winegrowers, as it guarantees positive results and will not lead to disappointment. The variety has a surprisingly frost-resistant root system and is one of those winter-hardy varieties grapes whose roots can withstand freezing of soils in Siberia in winter.Shrubs good growth with long, thin, early-ripening shoots. The clusters are medium, 100-200g to 500g, loose, winged or branched. The berry is medium, 2.2-3 g, round, dark blue, covered with pruin, with a high sugar accumulation of 21-22 percent. The skin is thin, dense, the flesh is juicy and melting. The taste is very pleasant, harmonious, with a changing aroma as it ripens, with a predominance of a subtle strawberry or other smell. The seeds are medium sized, 2-3 per berry. Ripening period is early. In the conditions of the Moscow region it matures in open ground already in early August one of the first. The harvest can be kept fresh until the New Year.
The thin vine is a feature and advantage of this variety - in case of severe winter, it bends freely to the ground and never breaks. The ability of some grape varieties to bear fruit with short pruning of the vine for the northern regions has great value, because ripening of the vine to a greater length is not required, and compact bushes It may be easier to protect from frost.
With good care, a grape harvest can be obtained from a 2-3 year old bush.
The five-six year old bush “Sharov’s Riddles”, already fully formed by this age, with a load of 8-12 shoots per bush, with two or three inflorescences on the shoot and a bunch weight of 300-500 g, gives a yield per bush of ~ 10 kg.
The advantage of bearing fruit with short pruning is also practical value: any gardener who does not know the technique of pruning grape bushes can grow this grape variety, because in this case, it is only enough to grow a pencil-thin annual woody vine into several buds so that it bears fruit the next year.

[VseRosNIIViV im. Y.I.Potapenko and Bulgaria]
Synonym: Kishmish Mirage
Rusbol is a soft-seeded table grape variety. Early ripening (115-125 days). Self-rooted plantings initially have medium vigor and then become vigorous. The clusters are large and very large, 400-600 g, often up to 1 kg, individual clusters over 1.5 kg, conical, moderately dense or moderately loose. The berries are 18x16 mm, seedless (class VI seedlessness - rudiments are present), white, oval, simple harmonious taste, with high sugar accumulation. Sugar content 19-21%, acidity 5-7 g/l. The annual growth of the Rusbol variety ripens early and very well. Fruitful shoots are 85-95%, the number of bunches per shoot is 1.5-1.9. The eyes at the base of the shoots are highly fruitful, so you can trim the vines for fruiting short, by 2-3 eyes. The load of bushes is 30-45 eyes, with an average pruning of fruiting vines by 6-8 eyes. Due to its high fertility, it is overloaded with harvest. Therefore, it is necessary to remove excess inflorescences and underdeveloped shoots. Rooting of cuttings is good. Self-rooted plantings begin to bear fruit in 2-3 years. Compatibility with most rootstocks is very good, so the Rusbol grape variety can be grafted onto almost all rootstocks. However, it is better to use vigorous bushes as a rootstock. Inflorescences on the shoots appear early. When the shoots reach a length of 7-10 cm, it is advisable to carry out the first cutting of excess shoots in order to enhance the growth of the remaining ones. On large and very large inflorescences, before flowering, the ends of the inflorescences can be removed, which significantly improves the commercial quality of the crop. Frost resistance -25°C, resistant to mildew (3.2 points), oidium, rot. Can be grown without covering the bushes for the winter. For Rusbol, high-standard formations or with medium length sleeves Due to its high fruitfulness, Rusbol can also be grown on short-armed formations, leaving 3-4 vines with 12-16 eyes for fruiting. As an early ripening, frost-resistant, stable, seedless grape variety, with large bunches and good accumulation of sugar, suitable for fresh consumption and for drying, Rusbol is a worthy variety, but rather large rudiments in the berries reduce its attractiveness as a seedless grape.

Reviews from forums:

The variety raisins on the bush. The bunch ripened in early August, but hangs until now (September 24), without losing quality. You rarely come across such a property. The berry is medium, the bunch is dense. The pulp is dense, the taste is sweet, but not cloying. When peeled off, the skin turns an anthocyanin color. The taste is sweet, without sourness. Nice. Looks technical. But it tastes like table grapes. Very productive. Medium-sized. The cluster is winged, single, double-sided, short, not loose.

Hanka! The variety, which was grown at the experimental station of the Primorsky Territory, I cannot give the exact date, but somewhere in the 60s of the last century, located on the shore of Lake Khanka in the Khanka valley, near the city of Spassk-Dalniy, and was named after this lake. Widespread did not receive due to loss in the 70s large quantity vineyards in Primorye due to climatic conditions, several severe winters in a row due to their freezing, which at the same time greatly undermined and reduced interest in wine growing in industrial production and the private sector, which led to the almost disappearance of many good varieties of Primorsky grapes.
In the 50-60s in the Primorsky Territory, the state organized a large-scale campaign to develop new grape varieties and created a wide network of experimental stations throughout Primorye.
