Region of natural growth, features of adaptation in other regions

The natural growth zone of the Phoenix Altai apple tree is West Siberian region of Russia.

But the apple tree adapts well to other regions when correct landing and care (see below). The variety is zoned in 1974.

Find out about the varieties of apple trees suitable for the specified regions:,.

Productivity

Apple tree variety Phoenix Altai considered high yielding. Fruiting occurs on fourth-fifth year after landing.

In practice, as a rule, it occurs earlier, but it is better to avoid this.

During the first five years, cut off the flowers, then the apple tree will, in the future, produce a larger harvest.

On average, they harvest from one apple tree up to 160 kilograms. Fruiting is annual, irregular, but abundant.

Removable maturity arrives in early September. The consumer period lasts until the beginning of February.

Planting and care

When planting a tree, use classic fertilizers.

The apple tree is not fussy to care for.

If you follow the basic instructions below, the yield of the Altai Phoenix apple tree can increase significantly and produce even more tasty and healthy fruits.

How, when and where should apple trees be planted?

The time of planting on the site directly depends on the age of the seedling. For example, In spring it is better to plant trees no older than two years.

If your tree is much older, it is better to choose autumn period. If the tree is completely mature, the planting season is definitely autumn, perhaps even closer to winter.

In this case, the apple tree will adapt more easily and will not die.

Altai phoenix is a winter variety of apple tree, and therefore it is recommended to choose the autumn period for planting.

Need to choose seedlings with a developed root system. Choose well drained areas for planting this variety.

If it is not possible to obtain such soil, you can dig a hole one meter deep and one meter in diameter, fill it with sand, compost and peat chips. This will create more Better conditions for seedling germination.

Be sure to water the tree thoroughly immediately after planting.

To prevent the tree from rotting, when planting, avoid places where groundwater placed close to the surface. Otherwise, the seedling will end up in water, which will lead to the death of the tree.

What care should be taken to obtain the desired harvest?

Regardless of when the Phoenix Altai apple tree was planted, intensive care begins in the first spring.

Basic care includes feeding, mulching the tree trunk circle, crown formation, prevention of diseases and pests.

To achieve the entry into fruiting of an apple tree for 4-5 years you need to fertilize with the following substances:

  • nitrogen organic and mineral fertilizers;
  • replenishment with urea.

Otherwise you can feed again with urea solution(a tablespoon per bucket of water) at the end of spring.

In summer, the following feeding is carried out:

  • adding ash to the soil;
  • feeding with compost.
Mulching the tree trunk circle with manure humus is especially useful. The circle is sprinkled with dried grass or straw on top.

Diseases and pests: how to fight?

The Altai Phoenix apple tree is characterized by low resistance to fungal diseases, and therefore their prevention is extremely important.

A number of comprehensive measures that have a preventive effect against various apple tree diseases:

  • pollination with colloidal sulfur and copper compounds;
  • destruction of affected elements;
  • application of potassium and phosphorus fertilizers;
  • adding ash to the soil;
  • crown formation;
  • replenishment with potash fertilizers;
  • spraying with calcium chloride during the growing season;
  • timely harvest.

If preventive measures are not observed, the Phoenix Altai apple tree is subjected to the following series diseases:

The first signs of scab are the appearance green- brown spots on leaves and small brown ones that form a crust, spots on fruits.

Scab first of all affects the leaves of the tree, and then moves to the fruits.

The cause of this fungus may be high humidity or air stagnation inside the crown of a tree.

If fungus-like wounds appear on the bark of an apple tree, then the tree has been infected tinder fungus.

This fungus severely affects the trunk of the apple tree, but affects the fruit indirectly. Necessary in the first stages get rid of the mushroom.

If the mushroom has severely damaged the tree, has become very hard and has reached large sizes, then the mushroom will have to be destroyed with an ax, then Naturally, healthy wood will also suffer.

If the wound is small, then it can be carefully cleaned with a garden knife. It is important to destroy the fungus at its very roots.

Otherwise, after some time, the mushroom will settle in the same place again.

After eliminating the fungus, the place in which it grew needs to be disinfected.

The treatment should be carried out copper sulfate , after which it is advisable to paint over the treated area oil paint . Otherwise, the tinder fungus will settle in the same place again.

Most often appears after heavy rains powdery mildew, usually in the form white plaque on the leaves of an apple tree. Infection occurs along the tree from the bottom up until it completely attacks the tree.

Quite often, the Phoenix Altai apple tree is affected by codling moth. These are nocturnal butterflies that lay eggs first on tree leaves, and after the formation of ovaries, on fruits.

Ultimately this leads to the appearance of worms. When the tree is already affected, it is necessary to spray with insecticides.

Best remedies:

  • containing esfenvalerate;
  • karbofos.

The Altai Phoenix apple tree is one of the most attractive appearance and taste qualities of fruit varieties.

Apples are characterized by long shelf life and good transportability.

However, the tree is often affected by scab. The codling moth also likes to eat fruits, but with simple prevention these troubles can be avoided.

Watch the video about what scab is and how to deal with it.

Quite pleased with the variety

Grade: 5

I bought Altai Phoenix seedlings at a nursery, they were quite expensive. I paid about 4,000 rubles for 3 bushes. My site is in the lowlands, and the winter temperature in the coldest frosts usually reaches -35C. There were, of course, even stronger colds at -44C, the fruit crop also endured them, only the main branches froze, which in the spring I simply removed with pruning shears and covered the affected areas with garden varnish.
Our summers are very dry in Altai, and I don’t have time to water the apple trees. They cope with this problem very well and can withstand all the typical climatic conditions of the region.
The fruits grow very juicy and tasty. Apples taste sweet and aromatic. Thanks to long-term storage, I eat them until spring. The taste does not deteriorate at all from storage, only at the end of winter the peel loses its elasticity and becomes soft. The apple tree suffers from scab, but I keep an eye on the tree and spray it immediately. After treatment, it recovers quickly and the fruits never spoil.
With proper care, you can harvest more than 40 kg of apples from an apple tree. I often sell some of it because the harvest is good every year.

Not happy with the apple tree

Grade: 3

For 10 years there has not been a single normal harvest from this apple tree, I constantly suffer from scab and powdery mildew - it’s just some kind of misfortune. The tree is tall, strong, the crown is wide and dense. It is difficult to treat the entire Phoenix for fungus and trim the branches.
It began to bear fruit early, the apples are medium in size, when I pick them from the tree they are green, and when they lie down they turn yellow. Very juicy, sweet and pleasant in taste. I always wait until the last minute and remove them from the tree in October. Instead of the promised 35-40 kg, I barely gain 10-15.
But compared to other winter varieties, the Altai Phoenix lies quietly until spring and does not spoil, remains just as juicy and aromatic, only in March the apples begin to rot, black spots form on them, which enlarge and spoil the fruits. This variety is zoned in the Altai Territory and the Western Siberian region, why our apple tree freezes slightly in the Tula region - I can’t imagine, our frosts are much less than in Siberia. It does not pollinate on its own, so you need to plant a pollinator nearby - the same winter variety.

Medium apple tree, there are better ones

Grade: 3

I purchased a two-year-old seedling. In the future, I took care of the growing one as it should. The tree began to grow. I was taught that for the first 3 years it is necessary to pick off flowers and prevent fruiting. We have enough apple trees on the site, so that’s what I did. In the 4th year the apple tree produced a harvest, and it increases every year.
The apple tree is quite large, tall, strong branches extend from the main trunk at right angles. It takes up a lot of space in the garden, but the yield is high! We collected several buckets from our six-year-old apple tree this year. Now we eat apples; they keep well until February.
Still, winter apples have an average taste. They are small, yellow-green, but juicy. In the future I plan to process them into juice. The apple tree is not afraid of frost. In our country, despite very coldy, even if the apple tree freezes slightly, it recovers well. You can't call her unpretentious. It is susceptible to various bacterial diseases and pests love it.

In order to enjoy ripe and tasty apples more often, the Phoenix Altai variety was bred in the northern regions of Russia. It was created at the Research Institute of the Siberian region for the Altai Territory. But thanks to its frost resistance, it has become popular in other northern regions.

Description of the variety

The Altai phoenix is an apple tree, the description of which should begin with the dimensions of the tree. This fruit crop is characterized as medium-sized. The maximum height of the tree can reach 8 m. Every year the plant grows up to 7 cm. The apple tree has a spherical crown of medium density. When caring, preventative pruning is necessary. The leaves are boat-shaped, deep green in color with a matte sheen. When choosing a place to plant a Phoenix apple tree, you should take into account its preferences regarding sunny places and deep location of groundwater.

Phoenix has a high yield. It can reach 50 kg of sweet and sour apples from one tree. The weight of one fruit reaches 100-150 g. The variety is distinguished by its juiciness, softness and fine-grained apples. Many gardeners rate their taste at 4 points on a tasting scale. Each apple contains a large number of useful vitamins and elements: iodine, iron, fiber, sucrose and other substances.

Apple Phoenix

Important! Phoenix apples are great for making preserves, sauces, mousses, jams and jams.

Apple tree Phoenix Altai - winter variety. The complete opposite of it is the Tsarsky Thorn apple tree. This is a summer variety of ancient folk selection. The trees are not tall, but the crown is quite spreading. Productivity is average and constant. The apples are medium in size, weighing no more than 100 g. The shape of the fruit resembles a cone. The color varies from greenish to yellow with red splashes. The pulp is loose, sour, but juicy. When fully ripe, the fruits acquire a fresh-sweet taste and a specific varietal flavor.

Tsar's thorn is a summer variety; ripening occurs in mid-August. Apples are poorly stored and transported. But if they are not fully ripe and carefully picked, apples can be transported and stored for no more than 6 weeks. This variety is suitable for Middle zone, has good frost resistance. But its frost resistance is incomparable with the frost resistance of the Altai Phoenix.

Disease resistance

Phoenix of Altai is an apple tree characterized by low resistance to diseases spread by fungi. The most destructive diseases are scab and powdery mildew. The reasons may be increased humidity and heavy rainfall.

Scab appears as brown spots spreading from the leaves to the fruit. Powdery mildew covers leaves and branches with a white coating. This leads to drying of the affected areas and shedding of the ovary. Distribution occurs from bottom to top.

Apple tree diseases

Various methods are used to combat diseases:

  • compliance with the rules of watering, fertilizing, crown pruning;
  • adding ash to the soil;
  • timely application of potassium-phosphorus fertilizers;
  • spraying with colloidal sulfur;
  • among the effective chemicals gardeners produce drugs: skor, chorus, hom, phytosporin.

Important! The variety can also be affected by the fungus tinder fungus. If the affected area is small, the wound should be cleaned with a garden knife; if the size of the mushroom is small, it should be cut out with an ax. Then you should treat the cut area with copper sulfate, and then apply oil paint.

Among the pests, apple trees can be attacked by the codling moth. These moths lay their eggs on leaves, ovaries and fruits. Worms soon appear in place of the eggs, which lead to the death of the plant. To combat emerging pests, insecticides are used that contain esfenvalerate and karbofos.

Pollination and harvesting

The apple tree of this variety requires pollinators, as it is a self-sterile variety. Among the best pollinators are the varieties Novost Altaya, Gornoaltaiskoe, and Pepinka Altaiskaya.

Pay attention! Gardeners have come to the conclusion that the Altai Phoenix can be pollinated by any variety that will bloom at a distance of 200 - 300 m.

Harvesting takes place throughout the fall from September to November. Dry, windless weather is suitable for this. The fruits should be picked carefully so as not to damage the stalk. It is advisable to use gloves.

Phoenix apples store well for almost 5 months without losing their taste or changing their presentation. Before sending for storage, fruits must be sorted by size. Apples are stored in wooden boxes separately from other varieties. The optimal storage temperature is not lower than 0°C.

Landing

When choosing a seedling, you should pay attention to its age. Trees take root well at the age of 2 years. They are planted in the spring before the buds open. If the apple tree is older than 2 years, it should be planted in the fall. It is advisable a few weeks before the frost, so that it immediately goes into hibernation, and with the onset of warmth the next year it wakes up and begins to grow with renewed vigor.

Apple tree planting

Loamy and sandy loam soils are suitable for this variety. A hole is dug 80 cm wide and 70 cm deep. Sand, compost and peat are poured into the prepared hole. If planting is carried out in the fall, the soil in the hole is filled warm water. The apple tree seedling should be placed with its cuttings on the south side and sprinkled with earth.

Important! When choosing a seedling, pay attention to the “hairiness” of the roots. Seedlings that do not have branches take root very poorly.

Tricks of gardeners in growing this variety:

  • To determine the age of an apple tree, look at the rings in places where branches are disconnected. First, count the branches from the trunk, then those located at the base of the growth. After counting the rings, add one to get the actual age of the tree.
  • To plant Phoenix, choose places with the largest snowdrifts in winter.
  • During the hot summer period, each tree should be watered once every 3 days. Consumption should be at least 10 liters per apple tree.
  • Planting a seedling on the south side of buildings and other trees will help protect the apple tree from frost.

Further care

The apple tree should be watered thoroughly so that the moisture goes at least 1 m to the roots. Every spring and autumn, regular fertilizing is carried out: humus or special compounds.

Note! If for several years the tree does not grow or produce fruit, you should pay attention to the quantity and quality of watering and fertilizing. The tree signals a lack of moisture and nutrients by its depressed appearance.

Crown formation

Basic rules for crown formation:

  • In the first year, do not prune the tree so as not to damage the root system.
  • In the second year of the tree’s life, a ball-like crown is formed. You should also remove damaged branches and those that have a crooked shape or grow horizontally from the tree.
  • In subsequent years, diseased and unnecessary branches are pruned.
  • By the fifth year, crown formation is completed. All that remains is to remove diseased, non-fruiting branches from time to time.

Important! A correctly formed crown resembles the shape of a bowl. In this case, the plant receives maximum amount sunlight.

The main secrets of caring for the Phoenix Altai apple tree are simple:

  • Regular watering, especially in summer.
  • Timely fertilizing in spring and autumn.
  • Disease prevention.
  • A careful approach to crown formation.
  • Fighting rodent attacks. To do this, the trunk is covered with cloth and dried branches.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Gardeners call the main advantages of choosing this variety:

  • High frost resistance. Able to withstand frosts down to −30°C.
  • The fruits are juicy and soft.
  • Does not require effort in care.
  • The fruits have a long shelf life.

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • In very cold winters, the apple tree may freeze.
  • The tree is not resistant to scab disease, especially in wet weather.

The Phoenix apple tree is valued by residents of the northern regions for its royal characteristics: the fruits are large, juicy, can be stored for a long time, and the trees tolerate frost well. Based on the Altai Phoenix, new varieties are developed every year that can resist various diseases and have large, juicy fruits. Perhaps in the near future, scab and powdery mildew will not be a problem for the subspecies of the variety described above.
