Story

The chant has ancient origins and has a counterpart in the text of the Western liturgy of Good Friday: " We worship Your Cross, O Christ, and St. We praise and glorify Your resurrection, for through the Cross came joy to the whole world" Initially, the song belonged to the Easter service, but already in the Easter Jerusalem “Consequence” of the 9th century, this song is given as a Sunday song after the reading of the Gospel. The chant is clearly of Jerusalem origin (“let us bow to the Holy Christ's resurrection" - an indication of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, frequent references to the Cross kept in the temple).

The song “The Resurrection of Christ” is already mentioned in liturgical monuments of the Studio period. However, in the oldest handwritten Studio Rules, it is present as a hymn for Sunday Matins, but not after the Gospel reading (immediately after the reading, according to the Studio Rule, the prokeimenon is placed).

There are known author's works based on the text of the chant “Having seen the Resurrection of Christ...”: the everyday version of A. A. Arkhangelsky, the tune of P. G. Chesnokov, original compositions by A. L. Vedel, A. T. Grechaninov, S. V. Rachmaninov, P. I. Tchaikovsky and others.

Liturgical use

The chant “Having seen the Resurrection of Christ” is used during worship:

  • Easter Matins according to the 6th song of the canon;
  • daily during the period from Easter to Ascension (inclusive);
  • Sunday Matins (except for Matins of the Week of Vai (Palm Sunday));
  • Matins of Lazarus Saturday;
  • Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

In modern liturgical practice of the Russian Orthodox Church, the chant “Having seen the Resurrection of Christ...” is usually performed by all believers in the 6th tone.

Having seen the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. We worship Thy Cross, O Christ, and we sing and glorify Thy holy resurrection: for Thou art our God, do we know no other to Thee, we call Thy name. Come, all faithful, let us worship the holy resurrection of Christ: behold, joy has come through the Cross to the whole world. Always blessing the Lord, we sing of His resurrection: having endured crucifixion, destroy death through death.

In Russian, Sunday got its name thanks to a great event for all people - the Resurrection of Christ crucified on the cross. It is difficult for a person to perceive the Wisdom of God, which declares terrible death a victory. In honor of the miraculous rising from the dead of the Son of Man, the Orthodox Church joyfully sings “Having seen the Resurrection of Christ” during the service:

  • on the pre-holiday Easter night (three times);
  • all 40 days from Easter to Ascension (the first week is sung three times);
  • at Matins before the Resurrection throughout the year (except Palm Sunday);
  • on the eve of Lazarus Saturday;
  • on the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

If there is a funeral service for a person who died on Easter, the hymn is included in the rite. There is a legend that these days the doors of Paradise are open, however, we cannot insist on this. The death of a Christian is not as gloomy as that of people who have no hope in the Lord. What happened, why are we having fun on this holiday?

Death tramples death

How to understand the joyful cry at the Easter service: “Christ raised from the dead, trampling down death by death, and giving life (life) to those in the grave”. Those who have read the Bible know that Jesus Christ resurrected three people, including his friend Lazarus, who had already begun to decompose. But their resurrection does not cause joyful rejoicing, although they also miraculously came to life. The difference between these Sundays is huge.

They came to life and will die again, but the Lord acquired an immortal body. Moreover, all of humanity was transformed from that moment on. All people will be resurrected and will live forever. Death no longer has power over us. We are left with the freedom to choose our posthumous eternal fate. Those who believe in Christ will dwell with Him in Paradise. Those who trust in God have bright hope in a Savior who:

  • delivers from hellish torment for sins;
  • for he forgives;
  • cleanses;
  • illuminates a person.

Note: The hymn “Having Seen the Resurrection of Christ” is dedicated to this event. Just as the Creed contains the dogmatic teaching of the Orthodox Church, so this song illuminates the circumstances that served our immortality, which we worship and glorify.

Baptism is a ticket to eternal life

The Lord said that only those who have faith and are baptized with water and the Holy Spirit will enter the Kingdom of God. At this moment, a person is completely cleansed of the original sin of Adam (which brings death), and a new one is born - a joint heir of Christ and His Resurrection. No one saw how the process of transfiguration of the dead body of the Lord took place. But we sing “having seen”, for we can:

  • Communicate with Him in prayer.
  • Feel and see His help.
  • Unite with Him in Communion, approaching the Eucharistic Cup.
  • To be cleansed of the sinful component in the Sacraments given by the Church.
  • Receive Grace, acquire the Holy Spirit.
  • See His Power, which is inherent in saints.

About 150 people witnessed the ascension of Christ, including 11 apostles, who gave their lives to bring the good news of the Resurrection to all nations. Will a person (and more than one) die for the Truth, preaching it, if he has not seen Him with his own eyes? No. Therefore, we believe them; many are convinced experimentally and irrevocably of the veracity of their words.

St. Maxim the Confessor:“He who knows the mystery of the cross and the tomb will also know the essential meaning of all things... He who penetrates even deeper than the cross and the tomb, and is initiated into the mystery of the resurrection, will know the ultimate purpose for which God created all things.”

Why do Christians honor the Cross?

The hymn contains the words “We worship Thy Cross, O Christ.” It would seem, why elevate the shameful instrument of execution so much? This was how it was before the Resurrection of Christ. Then it turned into a symbol of victory over death. Christians wear a cross like:

  • a sign of belonging to faith in the Son of God;
  • a symbol and weapon of protection from the devil's machinations;
  • sermon testimony.

During the time of persecution of Christians, in Rome there was a peculiar type of execution: prisoners in the circus arena were given to be eaten by hungry lions. Being on the verge of death, they fearlessly preached faith in Christ, the Resurrection and eternal life. Going to the torment, they testified that they were dying for the Truth, not fearing death, for they would still come to life. Seeing such determination, many pagans followed their example, becoming Christians.

Then the tongues of those doomed to a terrible execution began to be cut out. Confessors of Christ, so as not to be confused with murderers who were subjected to the same punishment, unable to speak, showed by signs why they were going to death. They depicted the symbol of the Cross: crossing their arms on their chest or above their heads; They depicted it from sticks that were found under their feet. Thus, the sermon still “sounded.”

Note: The miracle of the discovery of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord by the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, St. Helen, when the dead were resurrected, leaves no doubt that Christians worship not the instrument of death, but the triumph of victory over it.

A key moment not only in Christianity, but also in the history of all mankind. No more important event, as evidenced by even such a simple fact as the countdown of our chronology from this day. At the moment when the apostles found the tomb of the Son of God empty, world history divided into “before” and “after”. You may not believe in eternal life, but billions of people who call themselves Christians hope for it.

In Orthodoxy there is a wonderful prayer that begins with the words “I have seen the Resurrection of Christ.” Its text is solemnly sung at every Sunday all-night vigil after Easter. At the same time, many people have tears in their eyes, people bow and sign of the cross, expressing our respect for the sacrifice that Christ made for us.

The Importance of the Resurrection

Not only believers, but also respected scientists and philosophers testified. For example, Aristides, who lived in Afisha under Emperor Hadrian. He briefly and consistently outlined the essence of the events that took place in Jerusalem.

  • The Messiah named Christ had 12 disciples who were to spread the Good News throughout the world.
  • He was arrested and executed by the Jews, but on the third day he was resurrected, then ascended to heaven to His Father.
  • The students began to travel around different countries where the Gospel was preached. They were humble, yet they had such a strong faith that they preferred to die rather than give it up.

This Easter hymn perfectly reflects the significance of Christ's Resurrection. The text of the prayer is accessible, solemn and not very long. It is sung to the tune of the sixth voice, that is, a certain church chant, they are known to everyone who regularly attends services.

Liturgical use

This chant also sounds solemnly during the great holiday - the Exaltation of the Cross, immediately after an excerpt from is read in the middle of the temple. Although the holiday is dedicated to the suffering of the Savior on the Cross, the Cross is worshiped, but there is also a place for Easter joy on this day. To some this may not seem entirely appropriate. But the Holy Church finds firm justification in everything.

  • At first, the prototype was a small celebration of Little Easter. In the ancient Church it was held every 40-50 days. It was also called "".
  • The very origin of the word “Exaltation” is associated with the image of uprising, resurrection, ascension. The discovery of the Cross symbolized his rise from the earth.

Such a great event could not help but remind us of the very purpose of Christ’s sacrifice - His Resurrection, which all Christians, without exception, now await for themselves. In the Orthodox Church, this Sunday prayer is used quite often:

  • after the start of Easter celebrations until Ascension (on this day also);
  • at the night Easter service during the canon;
  • at Matins (except Palm Sunday);
  • on Lazarus Saturday;
  • during the Exaltation of the Cross.

In the period after Easter, prayers are repeated three times in a row. After the Ascension it is sung only once. Death on Easter week is considered a special mercy among the Orthodox, since legend says that at this time the gates of heaven are open to everyone. The dead during this period are buried in a special rite, which also includes this hymn.

Historical evidence

The text of the chant is quite ancient; the first written collections containing it date back to the 5th century. A similar hymn is found in the Catholic Church; it is sung on Great (Good) Friday. It is quite possible that he came to the Latin rite from the Jerusalem church thanks to the pilgrims. Myself Life-giving Cross kept in the Temple of the Resurrection. Perhaps the first lines are about this (about contemplating the place of resurrection):

Text of the prayer: Having seen the Resurrection of Christ

Having seen the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. We worship Your Cross, O Christ, and we sing and glorify Your holy Resurrection: for You are our God, do we know no other than You, we call Your name. Come, all you faithful, let us worship the Holy Resurrection of Christ: behold, through the Cross joy has come to the whole world. Always blessing the Lord, we sing His Resurrection: having endured the crucifixion, destroy death by death.

Historians date the hymn with a fairly wide range - from 335 (when the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was completed) to 614 (the beginning of the Persian invasion, which captured the Cross). Then the shrine was returned back (in 630), but this lasted only a few years. After which the Cross was taken away from the eternal city forever.

Interpretation and meaning of the prayer: Having seen the Resurrection of Christ

The Lord's victory over death inspires many worthy fathers to interpret this text. Theology can be summarized in a single phrase: “Christ suffered in the body, in the body, and rose again.” Thoughts about the suffering of the Lord are awakened by the performance of solemn chants. We see not only humanity, but also the divine part of the Son of Man, who gave us Easter joy.

It is more convenient to carry out interpretation along the lines, of which there are only 15:

Having seen the Resurrection of Christ

In reality, of course, no mortal was present at the rise of Jesus, who died, was taken down from the cross and laid in a cave. Here we are talking about something else - about personal resurrection. It manifests itself in the fact that we are free from the power of sin and death. For everyone who accepted Christ, life began in a new way. It is illuminated by God's grace, for which we were personally resurrected, emerging from the baptismal font.

Renewed Christians are filled with the highest feelings. They strive to give glory to the Lord, which is expressed in worship. It must be not only physical, because God first of all seeks the heart of a person, awaits worship in Spirit and truth. Worship speaks of the Holiness of the Son of God, which was rejected by many heretics of the first centuries of Christianity.

the only sinless one

The Lord is the light, the source of life and all that is good in it. Christians receive holiness as a gift. She makes us strive for good. Although the root of sin still remains in the soul, the righteous begin to recognize and fear it. The greater the power of sanctification, the greater the aversion to evil. With these words, believers confess the uniqueness of the God-man and declare their desire to grow in faith and righteousness.

I worship Your Cross, O Christ

The entire plan of salvation for mankind was accomplished through the Cross. Hatred of evil and determination to fight its manifestations guide you on the righteous path. The journey is not easy and you will need support. Through His suffering, the Lord sanctified the Cross, turning it into a weapon against the devil and his minions.

And we sing and glorify Your holy resurrection

Death, however, was not the end of the road. Greatest Loss turned out to be a great victory. It is her that the parishioners glorify in their song. They rejoice in salvation, in the promised meeting with the Son of God. The atonement was accomplished, after which the Lord appeared to remain with his Church until the end of the age.

For You are our God, do we not know otherwise to You?

Confessing Jesus Christ as the Son of God is an important step on the path to faith. This means that a person realized and accepted the sacrifice that was made for each of us. Personal

meeting the Savior is very important. Without it, faith will not be complete, nor will joy. The only way children can thank their heavenly Father is complete loyalty to Him always and in everything.

we call your name

Repetition of the Lord's name is a sacred act, which used to be recited only in the sanctuary, once a year. Today everyone is free to call on him whenever he wants. The utterance of these holy words must be done consciously. This is how we not only ask for something, but also express our love.

Come, all faithful, let us worship the Holy Resurrection of Christ

Our joy is not complete if there is no one to share it with. Bliss is for all the faithful. Joint worship is especially graceful; Christ Himself commanded believers to gather together to praise God. The Resurrection transformed human nature, it became perfect, which is what the apostles saw. Now the Son of God in this body sits next to the Father. Thanks to Him, this became possible for all the descendants of Adam.

The whole world, lying in sin, today has a great weapon against the devil - the Cross of the Lord. Being an instrument of shameful execution, today it has become a symbol eternal life. Every Christian should remember this and rejoice in their salvation, glorifying God.

The Lord voluntarily ascended to Golgotha to survive death in human body. With this he pulled out her sting. After all, after the Fall, death became natural for people who were originally created perfect. After the resurrection, Christ ascended to heaven, clearing the way to heaven for human souls. Therefore, eternal glory, honor and worship are due to Him!

Creed

I believe in one God the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, to Whom all things were. For our sake, man and our salvation came down from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human. She was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And again the coming one will be judged with glory by the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I hope for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the next century. Amen.

Worthy to eat

It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify Thee, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.

Song of the Blessed Virgin Mary

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

Chorus: Most honorable Cherub and most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption, the real Mother of God, we magnify You.

As you look upon the humility of Your servant, behold, from now on all your kindred will please Me.

For the Mighty One has done greatness to Me, and holy is His name, and His mercy throughout all generations of those who fear Him.

Create power with Your arm, scatter the proud thoughts of their hearts.

Destroy the mighty from their thrones and lift up the humble; Fill those who hunger with good things, and those who are rich let go of their vanity.

Israel will receive His servant, remembering His mercies, as He spoke to our fathers, Abraham and his seed, even unto eternity.

Prayer righteous Simeon God-receiver

Now release Thy servant, O Master, according to Thy word in peace; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people, a light for the revelation of tongues, and the glory of Your people Israel.

Psalm 50, repentance

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and I will take away my sin before me. To You alone have I sinned and done evil before You; for you may be justified in all of Your words, and you will always triumph over Your judgment. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, you have loved the truth; You have revealed to me the unknown and secret wisdom of Yours. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. My hearing brings joy and joy; humble bones will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward me with the joy of Your salvation and strengthen me with the Lord’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise. As if you had desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God will not despise a broken and humble heart. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then favor the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and the burnt offering; Then they will place the bullock on Your altar.

Prayer to Holy Easter

O Most Sacred and Greatest Light of Christ, Who shone forth more than the sun throughout the whole world in Your Resurrection! In this bright and glorious and saving laziness of Holy Pascha, all the angels in heaven rejoice and every creature rejoices and rejoices on earth and every breath glorifies Thee, its Creator. Today the gates of heaven have opened, and I, having died, have been freed into hell by Your descent. Now everything is filled with light, the heavens are the earth and the underworld. May Your light come into our dark souls and hearts and may it enlighten our present night of sin, and may we also shine with the light of truth and purity in the bright days of Your Resurrection, like a new creation about You. And thus, enlightened by You, we will go out with luminosity at the meeting of You, who comes to You from the tomb, like the Bridegroom. And as Thou didst rejoice on this bright day by Thy appearance of the holy virgins who came from the world to Thy grave in the morning, so now enlighten the deep night of our passions and dawn upon us the morning of passionlessness and purity, so that we may see Thee with our hearts, redder than the sun of our Bridegroom, and may we hear once again Your longed-for voice: Rejoice! And having thus tasted the Divine joys of the Holy Pascha while still here on earth, may we be partakers of Your eternal and great Pascha in heaven in the unevening days of Your Kingdom, where there will be unspeakable joy and those celebrating the unceasing voice and ineffable sweetness of those who behold Your ineffable kindness. For You are the True Light, enlightening and illuminating all things, Christ our God, and glory befits You forever and ever. Amen.
