Yesterday I wrote about how, today we will talk about changing the firmware on this wireless router.

It may be necessary to flash a router in cases where there are suspicions that problems with the connection and operation of the device are caused precisely by problems with the firmware. In some cases, installing a newer version may help resolve such issues.

After everything preparatory stages passed, go to the router settings web interface. To do this, enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser, and then your login and password. The standard ones are admin and admin, but it is possible that during the initial setup you already changed the password, so enter yours.

Two options for the router web interface

You will see the main router settings page, which in the newer version looks like the picture on the left, in the older version it looks like the screenshot on the right. We will consider the ASUS RT-N12 firmware in a newer version, however, all the steps in the second case are completely the same.

Go to the “Administration” menu item and on the next page select the “Firmware Update” tab.

Click the “Select file” button and specify the path to the downloaded and unpacked new firmware file. After this, click the “Submit” button and wait, while taking into account the following points:

  • The connection with the router may be interrupted at any time during a firmware update. To you, this may look like a hung process, a browser error, a "cable not connected" message in Windows, or something similar.
  • If the above occurs, do not do anything, especially do not unplug the router from the outlet. Most likely, the firmware file has already been sent to the device and the ASUS RT-N12 is being updated; if it is interrupted, this may lead to device failure.
  • Most likely, the connection will be restored on its own. You may need to visit 192.168.1.1 again. If none of these happen, wait at least 10 minutes before taking any action. Then try going to the router settings page again.

Once the router firmware is completed, you can automatically go to the main page of the Asus RT-N12 web interface, or you will have to go to it yourself. If everything went well, you can see that the firmware number (listed at the top of the page) has been updated.

In order to get to the router’s web interface, you need to open your Internet browser and type 192. 168.1.1 in the address bar, Username - admin , Password - admin(provided that the router has factory settings and its IP has not changed).

Changing the factory password

Default: Login admin, password admin.

In the router interface, you need to go to the tab Additional options , select tab Administration and click on the tab at the top System.

In the field New Password enter a new password. It must be repeated in the next field.

Equipment, appearance

The router comes in a thick cardboard box. The box is wrapped in polyethylene.
The most important characteristics are emphasized on the front side.

On back side, other detailed information.

On the side are detailed parameters.
Two large icons for Mac and Win8 are visible. It's strange that there is no mention of Linux support...

In order to find out which version of the router you got, you need to look at the sticker:
The release date is present. In our case, 2014.
It also indicates the firmware version. We got the version: V3.0.0.4.374_880
This firmware was released on 2014/04/18. By the way, on the manufacturer’s website there is an updated firmware dated 2015/02/11
Changes in firmware 3.0.0.4.376.3835 dated 2015/02/11:
1) Asus has fixed a critical vulnerability in its routers. The "hole" was in a service called infosvr, which is used by Asus utilities to facilitate router configuration by automatically detecting it in local network. The vulnerability made it possible to execute any commands with root rights (after all, infosvr is also root), which gave the attacker complete control over the system.
2) Added support for Yandex DNS

In this review we will review the router, so to speak, “out of the box”, with standard firmware V3.0.0.4.374_880

The equipment is standard for routers of this class:
Router ASUS RT-N12 VP
RJ45 patch cord (1 meter long)
power supply (1.5 meters long)
instructions
warranty card

Third party power supply.
12V - 500mA

The appearance of the device is very pleasant. Stylish design with chopped lines in black.
This router will look great in any interior.

Both edges are made ventilation holes for heat removal.

On the rear side there are buttons and connectors, from left to right:
1. Reset button (reset settings to factory settings)
2. Power button PWR
3. Connector/socket for connecting the power supply
4. LAN ports - 4 connectors yellow
5. WAN port - 1 connector blue
6. WPS button (for quick setup)

It is worth noting two antennas. They are not removable. Overall, this is not a drawback. Just a feature.

There are indicators on the device, from left to right:
1. PWR (Power)
2. Wi-Fi operation
3. Connecting the WAN port
4. Connectors for 4 LAN ports
When working, they are illuminated in a bright blue color. Slightly strong. A little annoying.

WITH reverse side The device has rubber feet.
Perforation for ventilation and information sticker.
The data for control via a Web browser is indicated: IP address, password, PIN code. And also, the firmware version, serial number products and MAC address.

Now let's disassemble our device!
The RT-N12 VP router is based on a Broadcom BCM5357C0 processor with MIPS 74K V4.9 architecture and a frequency of 300 MHz. There is also 32 MB of RAM based on the Etron Technology EN63A165TS-6G chip and 8 MB of flash memory for storing firmware.

The radio module supports 802.11b/g/n protocols in the 2.4 GHz band, and maximum speed connection is 300 Mbit/s. The processor also manages five 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports.

The device is equipped with two non-removable external antennas with a gain of 5 dBi.
They are soldered directly to the board.
Other features include support for up to three guest networks, parental controls, traffic filtering, DDNS services, traffic manager and QoS, DMZ, operating modes as an access point or repeater, support for IPTV and PPTP/L2TP clients.

I also separately purchased a Power over Ethernet (PoE) splitter injector.
This addition is necessary when the router needs to be installed in a place where there is no 220V outlet
For example, in the corridor. Let's check whether our model supports this technology.

ASUS RT-N12VP coped with the task perfectly.
This router supports Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology
The power supply was in another room. The power was transferred successfully.

Connection and setup

To connect the router you need to do the following:
1. Connect the power supply cable.
2. Insert a patch cord into the yellow LAN connector, which we also connect to the LAN port of a laptop or PC.
3. In the WAN port - (blue), insert a network cable with the Internet. It can also come from an ADSL modem.

(img:19:click:medium)

Next, press the power button. 5-10 seconds will pass and the device is ready for use.
After turning on the router, you just need to launch the browser, and when you try to follow any link, a settings window will open. I launched Internet Explorer and saw the following window:
Click Go...

In the next window you need to select the type of your Internet connection.
In my case, it's a static IP

We enter the IP that your provider gave you.
Just in case, click “Clone MAC address”, in case your provider has a binding to the MAC address.
If you know this data, you can call your provider's technical support service.

(img:23:click:full)

Next, let's set up a Wi-Fi network.
You need to create a password. The password must be longer than 8 digits. For increased security, you can add a Latin letter or letters.
By default, the network name will be ASUS. The name can be changed.

Congratulations! The network is configured. After this, your Internet and Wi-Fi network should work.

Now let's look at the capabilities of the router.
On the left there are two large items “General” and “Advanced settings”
The main menu looks like this.
In the center: Internet status, Wi-Fi status and number of connected clients.

In the "Guest Network" section, you can configure guest access in three options.
By default, access to the local network is disabled. Only the Internet is available to guests.

In Traffic Manager, you can limit the speed and view the total traffic consumption.
It’s a pity that you can’t see how much this or that client spent (by MAC address). Statistics only in general view. And only online. If you close the page, the data will disappear. In fact, the thing is almost useless.

In Parental Control you can selectively restrict clients' access to the Internet. (by MAC address) You can select specific days of the week and allowed hours. Convenient enough.

In the "tab" Wireless networks" there are settings for Wi-Fi networks.
You can configure WPS, Bridge between Wi-Fi networks.
Create a filter of MAC addresses of allowed clients, etc.
In general, everything is standard, convenient and understandable.

Below I will give only the most important parameters for the average user.
For example, port forwarding is located in the Internet - Port Forwarding section.
In this case, I have configured port forwarding for the Remote Desktop.

The Dynamic DNS service is located in the "Internet" section - DDNS
This is useful when you do not have your own external IP address.
I use this function to use Remote Desktop.

In the "Firewall" section you can block any sites. For example, popular Social networks.

In the "Administration" section you can change the operating mode of the router, update the firmware or change the password for logging into the router. All menu items are supplied detailed description.

Tests

Let's test the data transfer speed over a local Wi-Fi network
My laptop has a Wi-Fi adapter that only supports 150 Mbps connection
The file copying speed was approximately 10 MB/sec

Now let's do an Internet speed test.
For reference speed, we will conduct a test without a router. Directly via cable.

Now let's connect the router back and run a test via the cable.
Test successful! The speed corresponds to the reference.

Let's do a speed test via Wi-Fi network using a Windows laptop.
The distance of the laptop from the router is 1 meter.
As you can see, the router “cuts” the Wi-Fi speed

Conclusion

In general, the router is normal. Looks great. Very easy to set up.
It feels like programmers from a large, high-quality brand had a hand in it. The firmware is well thought out and provided with hints. But the functionality for this money is slightly insufficient. Your competitors have both USB and removable antennas. But do you need it? Everyone will answer for themselves, of course.
Wi-Fi speeds are a bit disappointing. I recommend this router to those who have an Internet tariff of up to 50 Mbit/sec.

Pros
- Firmware with detailed descriptions.
- Stylish appearance.
- Ability to connect two IPTV set-top boxes

Cons
- "cuts" Wi-Fi speed
- indicators are too bright.
- non-removable antennas. It will not be possible to install a directional one.
- there is not enough USB port. Competitors have it for less money.

Thank you very much for your attention.
I would like to express my gratitude to ASUS and the administration of the DNS store chain for the opportunity to write a review.

Any router performs its functions through the interaction of two sets of components: hardware and software. And if intervention in the technical modules of the device is not possible for the average user, then the built-in software can and should even be maintained by the owner of the router independently. Let's look at how operations are carried out that involve updating, reinstalling and restoring the firmware (firmware) of multifunctional and popular ASUS RT-N12 VP routers.

All of the instructions below are, in general, ways of interacting with the router firmware documented by the manufacturer, that is, they are relatively safe for the device. In this case:

Due to unexpected failures or as a result of erroneous actions on the part of the user during the process of flashing the router, there is a certain risk of the device losing its functionality! All manipulations according to the recommendations from the article are carried out by the owner of the device at his own peril and risk and only he is responsible for the results of the operations!

It doesn’t matter for what purpose the router is being interfered with – updating the firmware, reinstalling it, or restoring the device’s functionality – to quickly and successfully carry out any operation, several preparatory steps should be performed.

Specifications network equipment are not developing at such a rapid pace as other devices from the computer world, so manufacturers are not able to frequently release new models of routers. At the same time, development and improvement still occur, which leads to the emergence of new hardware revisions of essentially the same device.

ASUS routers of the model in question were produced in two versions: "RT-N12_VP" And "RT-N12 VP B1". It is in this way that hardware versions are indicated on the manufacturer’s website, which is an important factor when choosing and downloading firmware for a specific device.

The methods of manipulating the firmware and the tools used for this are identical for both revisions. By the way, the instructions described below can also be used for other versions of RT-N12 from Asus ( "D1", "C1", "N12E", "LX", "N12+ B1", "N12E C1", "N12E B1", "N12HP"), it is only important to choose the right firmware package to write to the device.

To find out the hardware revision of the ASUS RT-N12 VP, turn the router over and look at the sticker located on the bottom of its case.

Item value "H/W Ver:" will tell you which version of the device we have in front of us, which means for which modification we need to look for the firmware package:

Downloading firmware:

  1. Let's go to the official ASUS website:
  2. In the search field, enter your router model in the form as found above, that is, according to the hardware revision. Click "Enter".
  3. Click the link "Support" located below the model search result.
  4. Go to the section "Drivers and utilities" on the page that opens, then select "BIOS and software".

    As a result, we get access to the button "DOWNLOAD" to download latest version firmware for the Internet center.

    If you need previous firmware builds, click "SHOW ALL +" and download one of the older versions of the system software.

  5. We unpack the resulting archive and as a result we get an image file ready for writing to the device. *.trx

Administrative panel

All manipulations with the software of the router of the model in question are generally performed through the web interface (admin panel). This convenient tool makes it easy to configure the router according to the user's needs and also perform firmware maintenance.

Backup and restoration of settings

As you know, out of the box the router will not function as the basis for building a home network; you need to first configure a number of parameters. At the same time, once you have configured the ASUS RT-N12 VP, you can save the state of the device in a special configuration file and use it in the future to restore the parameters to the values in effect at a certain point in time. Since during the process of flashing the router it is possible that the need to reset the settings to factory settings may arise, we create a backup copy of them.

To restore router parameter values from a file in the future, use the same section and tab in the admin panel as for creating a backup.

Reset settings

During the process of configuring a router for specific purposes and under certain operating conditions, errors and incorrect/inappropriate parameter values cannot be excluded by the user. If the purpose of interfering with the operation of the ASUS RT-N12 VP is to correct the incorrect performance of one or more functions by the device, perhaps resetting the parameters to factory values and performing configuration from scratch will help correct the situation.

In situations where the login and/or password for accessing the web interface is forgotten, or the IP address of the admin panel was changed in the settings and then lost, it is necessary to restore the settings to the factory settings using a hardware key.

The experience gained by many users who have flashed routers has allowed us to formulate several tips that can be used to minimize the risks that arise during the process of reinstalling the firmware.

  1. Carry out all operations that involve interfering with the operation of the router’s system software by connecting the latter to the computer using a patch cord, but not via a wireless connection!
  2. Ensure uninterrupted power supply to the router and PC used for manipulation. It is advisable to connect both devices to the UPS!
  3. While performing operations with the router software, limit its use by other users and devices. Before carrying out manipulations according to the instructions below "Method 2" And "Method 3" remove the cable that supplies the Internet from the provider from the port "WAN" router.

Firmware

Depending on the state of the ASUS RT-N12 VP software and the user’s goals, one of three methods for flashing the router is used.

Method 1: Firmware Update

If the device functions generally normally and there is access to the administrative panel, and the user’s goal is solely to update the firmware version, we proceed as follows. To perform a firmware update using the simplest method described below, you don’t even need to download files - everything is done without leaving the ASUSWRT web interface. The only requirement is that the device must receive Internet via cable from the provider.

  1. Open the router admin panel in the browser, log in and go to the section "Administration".
  2. Select a tab "Firmware update".
  3. Click the button "Check" opposite the point "Firmware version" in the area of the same name.
  4. We are waiting for the process of searching for updated firmware to complete on ASUS servers.
  5. If there is more new version firmware than that installed in the router, a corresponding notification will be issued.
  6. To initiate the firmware update procedure, click "Update".
  7. We are waiting for the process of downloading system software components to complete,

    and then download the firmware into the device memory.

  8. Upon completion of the procedure, the router will reboot and start already functioning under the updated version of the firmware.

Method 2: Reinstall, update, downgrade firmware

Like the method described above, the instructions offered below allow you to update the firmware version of the Internet center, but also makes it possible to return to older firmware, as well as completely reinstall the device’s firmware without changing its version.

For manipulations, you will need an image file with the software. Download the archive with the desired assembly from the official ASUS website and unpack it into a separate directory. (The process of downloading archives from the software is described in more detail in the article above).

Method 3: Firmware recovery

As a result of unsuccessful experiments with firmware, after a failure to update or install custom firmware, as well as in other situations, the ASUS RT-N12 VP may stop functioning properly. If you can’t open the router’s web interface, resetting the parameters using the button on the case does not help restore functionality; in general, the device has turned into a beautiful, but non-functional piece of plastic; it is necessary to restore its software part.

Fortunately, “raking up” Asus routers is usually carried out without any problems, because the manufacturer’s specialists have developed a specialized proprietary utility that makes it easy to get out of the described situation - Firmware Restoration.

  1. Download from the official Asus website and unpack the archive with the firmware of any version for your router hardware revision.
  2. Download the distribution archive and install the Firmware Restoration tool from ASUS:
    • Go to the technical support page in the section "Drivers and utilities" your router, using one of the links depending on the revision:
    • Select the version of Windows installed on the computer used as a tool for manipulating the router;
    • Click "Show all" under the first paragraph "Utilities" a list of tools available for download;
    • Press the button "Download", located opposite the name of the tool we need - "Firmware Restoration";
    • We wait for the package to download, and then unzip the received file;
    • Launch the installer "Rescue.exe"

      and follow his instructions,

      thus installing the Firmware Restoration utility.

  3. We change the settings of the network adapter through which the router firmware will be restored:
    • Opening "Network and Sharing Center", for example, from "Control Panels";
    • Click the link "Changing adapter settings";
    • By right-clicking on the icon network card, through which the router will be connected, call the context menu, in which we select the item "Properties";
    • In the window that opens, select the item "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and then press "Properties";
    • The next window is our goal and is used to enter parameters.

      Set the switch to position "Use the following IP address" and then enter the following values:

      192.168.1.10 – in the field "IP address";

      255.255.255.0 – in the field "Subnet Mask".

    • Click "OK" in the window where the IP parameters were entered, and "Close" in the adapter properties window.

  4. We connect the router to the PC as follows:

  5. Let's start restoring the firmware:
    • We MUST open Firmware Restoration on behalf of the Administrator;
    • Click the button "Review";
    • In the file selection window, specify the path to the downloaded and unpacked router firmware. Select the file with the firmware and press "Open";
    • Click "Download";
    • The further process does not require intervention and includes:

  6. We are waiting for the ASUS RT-N12 VP to reboot - the end of this process will be indicated by the illuminated indicator "Wi-Fi" on the body of the device.
  7. We return the network adapter settings to default values.
