Diamond-shaped stone. Gemstone cutting: Classic types of wedge cuts. Facet cut and its types

Topaz is a semi-precious stone, known for its high hardness. The mineral is part of the second group of natural stones used in jewelry and is an aluminum silicate containing fluorine.

The name of the stone most likely comes from the Sanskrit word “tapas,” meaning “fire, heat.” Or from the Aramaic word “tapuz” - orange.

The ancient Roman polymath writer Pliny the Elder argued that the name “topaz” came from the ancient Greek words “topaz” or “topazion”, from the name of an island located in the Red Sea. There they discovered a transparent golden-yellow stone, which they called topaz. In Russian, a type of stone was called “tumpaz” until the 19th century. In the Urals, miners called the stone “heavyweight” because of its high density and high specific gravity, since it is much heavier than many other precious minerals.

The stone is so beautiful that it is sometimes confused with a diamond. For its physical characteristics and aesthetic properties, topaz received the name “Siberian diamond”. The mineral can be either transparent or opaque, with a characteristic glassy luster, with a prismatic crystal shape.

In addition, despite its high hardness, the stone is quite fragile and breaks easily. This is explained by perfect cleavage in all three dimensions.

In nature, different types of natural topaz are often found; the stones can be very large and weigh up to several centners. There are quite a lot of mineral deposits. The most famous are in Australia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Germany, Myanmar, Pakistan, USA, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. In Russia, topazes are mined in the Urals and Transbaikalia.

Artificial stones are grown from aqueous solutions of complex composition at a temperature of about 500 degrees Celsius. However, such specimens are not of particular commercial value.

Vertical depressions in the form of grooves running along the prismatic faces of the mineral are its unique and valuable feature.

The characteristics of the chemical composition of topaz are as follows:

  • Aluminum oxide – 48-60%.
  • Fluorine – 13-20%.
  • Silicon dioxide – 28-40%.
  • Water – up to 2.5%.

Inclusions of iron, chromium, and titanium are noted.

Physical characteristics of the stone: when heated, topaz becomes cloudy, but does not melt; decomposes with phosphorus salt and forms silica crystals; susceptible to sulfuric acid, does not dissolve in other acids, and upon prolonged heating forms a small amount of hydrogen fluoride. After combining with calcium carbonate, it dissolves in nitric acid.

What colors do topazes come in: types of stones and their photos

This transparent gem in nature has a large number of shades. It can be blue, soft yellow, pale pink, and can combine several colors at the same time. Minerals that combine several colors at the same time are called polychrome. This unique feature is due not only to physical characteristics, but also to the characteristics of the crystal lattice. The extraordinary polychrome effect and various varieties of topaz colors are obtained as a result of the refraction of light in a certain way. The gem is afraid of direct rays of the sun and can fade when exposed to bright light, so stones mined close to the surface of the earth are often colorless. The mineral is also sensitive to high ambient temperatures and can change color during hot periods. Rare red, pink and purple crystals are most susceptible to uneven fading in a short time, while green and blue shades are more persistent and can last for years. A unique feature of natural gems is that they can restore their color when in complete darkness.

The stone also lends itself to targeted processing, which results in more saturated bright colors.

Look at the photo depicting blue topaz:

Processed stones have deep blue colors, and additional cutting allows you to admire the extraordinary radiance of gems in jewelry.

Due to their relatively low price and variety of natural shades, gems are popular among jewelers. Before being used in jewelry, the samples are refined: they are subjected to irradiation and heat treatment, as a result of which they become brighter. However, the market value of processed gems is falling. A curious natural feature of the crystal is its ability to change color. Moreover, this does not happen due to the presence of any impurities in the structure of the stone, but as a result of the formation of defects in the crystal lattice.

The commercial value varies depending on the natural color of the topaz. Thus, bright pink and rare purple specimens are considered the most valuable. Yellow, sky blue and golden brown minerals are highly valued. Large collectible specimens are sold at auction without additional processing.

There are official commercial names for varieties of topaz, which are identified by color:

Champagne– yellow, amber and brown topaz.

Silver- a type of transparent mineral.

Rutilated topaz– contains inclusions of rutile.

London blue topaz- dark blue mineral.

Sherry– sherry or cream of tartar.

Imperial– a special valuable topaz, which has the natural color of the stone in pink, red and rich burgundy shades.

"Tea"- this is what Russian jewelers call the pale yellow variety of the gem.

Swiss blue– has a rich blue tint.

sky blue– transparent sky blue crystal.

"Saxon peridots"– exclusive natural crystals that can be found in the collections of connoisseurs and experts. They have a yellow-green and bright green color.

How much does topaz cost: the price of a stone per carat

To determine how much topaz costs, you need to consider the stone according to the following criteria:

  • Purity.
  • Color.
  • Quality of cut.

At the same time, it is important to take into account not each quality separately, but all criteria together. Jewelry samples are presented in a variety of shades. The most common ones in stores are blue, women love to wear them, but they are not of particular value to professionals. Both faceted and polished samples are used in jewelry. Moreover, the gem lends itself perfectly to various cutting methods.

The most important role in determining the estimated value is played by the origin of the crystal and what colors of the topaz. The most expensive are natural minerals of red shades, since they are less common in nature than others. It is the high cost and uniqueness of this color that provokes the production of numerous fakes.

It is important to be able to distinguish fake gems.

There are such proven techniques:

  1. Natural stone becomes electrified when rubbed against woolen fabric.
  2. Counterfeits quickly heat up in the palms.
  3. A real mineral may leave scratches on glass or crystal.
  4. Natural crystals often have defects, while fakes have an ideal structure.
  5. Too saturated a color is a sure sign of a fake.
  6. Natural stones have delicate, often pale shades.

Blue topaz is the most inexpensive variety. Gems of this shade come in three types.

  1. The most inexpensive is SkyBlue, or “sky blue,” from $1 to $2 per carat.
  2. More saturated Swisstopaz, or “Swiss topaz”, the price of the stone is from $4 to $10 per carat.
  3. And finally, the most expensive and most intense of the blue topaz is “LondonBlue”, or “London Blue”, from $8 to $20 per carat.

Next after the blue ones in the price category are golden-yellow topazes. It is interesting to know how much a carat of untreated topaz of rare natural colors costs. Top quality stones can cost up to $700-$800 per carat.

Topaz, called "Imperial", is more expensive than golden yellow. The main distinguishing feature of "Imperial" is its pinkish-red hue, which is never found in golden-yellow topaz. The highest quality Imperial is valued at $700 to $1,600 per carat.

Take a look at the photo to see how beautiful the precious “Imperial Topaz” is:

The red-orange, teardrop-cut stone sparkles with red inner fire. Such balanced contrasts in the play of colors are evidence of the highest professionalism of the cutter.

The most expensive of topaz is pink. Even just seeing a natural natural pink gem is a great success. It is mined in Brazil and is called “Imperial Topaz”. The price for top quality stones starts at $900 per carat (if the stone weighs no more than 3 carats) and goes up to $3,000 per carat for stones weighing from 10 to 20 carats. The extraordinary beauty of such a stone is best demonstrated under artificial light.

Topaz gemstone in jewelry (with photo)

This popular decorative stone is widely used in jewelry making, despite the difficulties in processing and cutting it.

Topaz is primarily a feminine gemstone. It is not installed in men's jewelry. Jewelry with topaz is a rare case when the stones can be matched to the color of the eyes. For those with blue eyes, blue minerals of any shade from Skyblue to London are ideal. For gray or light green eyes, you can choose colorless and lightly colored yellow topazes, and for brown eyes, amber-red “Imperial” is suitable. And if earrings with gems are chosen to match the eye light, then the tone of the mineral in the ring should match the color of the outfit. Fashion gurus advise playing with the contrast of colors by choosing bright jewelry.

The size of the stone in the decoration is a matter of taste, but you should not overdo it.

In rings and pendants, a unique gem is combined with yellow metals and responds well to proximity to other crystals.

Caring for products with gems is not difficult; it is important to follow a few simple rules:

  1. Try not to contaminate the stone with cosmetics or other products.
  2. Protect from exposure to household chemicals.
  3. Remove decorations when cooking.
  4. Do not wear to the gym, as sweat has a bad effect on the gem.
  5. When storing, wrap in soft cloth.

You can periodically clean your jewelry in this way: immerse the item for 15 minutes in a solution consisting of 75 ml of warm water and 25 ml of dishwashing liquid. Then wipe dry with a soft cloth.

Magical, healing and astrological properties of topaz

This mineral is known for its strong magical properties. It is believed that topaz can protect against the evil eye, damage, and protect against witchcraft and other negative influences. The mineral is called for help when you need to concentrate and make an informed life decision. It is believed that it makes it possible to instill one’s thoughts into others. The general meaning of topaz: these are stones that bring true love, trust, success.

  • Blue crystals are symbols of leadership, psychic abilities, and tranquility.
  • Golden gems symbolize happiness, freeing one from unnecessary passions, sharpening the sense of taste, and helping to overcome fear, despair, doubt and anger.

In the Middle Ages, this mineral was considered a symbol of peace, goodness and common sense. The belief in the magical properties of topaz among sailors was very strong: the blue stone was always on the ship, it was supposed to tame the raging elements and preserve it during a storm. And the medieval crusaders considered it a good sign to bring a blue crystal to their lady love from a military campaign. In addition, this mineral was endowed with the property of changing its color under the influence of a toxic substance in the drink, which is why it was often used to inlay the cups of kings.

Topaz also has medicinal properties\, it is responsible for the state of the immune system and gives the body the strength to cope with depression, in addition, it is a good auxiliary remedy for getting rid of such diseases:

  1. Female infertility.
  2. Angin.
  3. Nervous disorders.
  4. Bone diseases.
  5. Endocrine diseases.
  6. Pathologies of the liver and gall bladder.
  7. Disturbances in the hematopoietic system.

Many traditional healers use the gem to treat sleep disorders and relieve nightmares. It is recommended to wear products with this crystal to protect against acute respiratory diseases and strengthen the immune system.

The Jewelry Industry Council of America and the British National Association of Jewelers recognize topaz as a birthstone for those born in November.

For those who wear jewelry with topaz stone, it is important to take into account their zodiac sign and character traits. Each natural mineral can bring both benefit and harm to its owner. The naturally occurring mineral is suitable for almost anyone, but has different effects on everyone.

There is only one zodiac sign for which there are no contradictions regarding the correspondence of topaz and its astrological properties. Scorpio people are indeed those for whom the topaz stone is more suitable than others, because they are more often exposed to extremes and need to restore psycho-emotional balance. These people also require additional support to make the right decisions. This unique mineral will give them the energy they need to manage ambiguous emotions and add sanity and balance, especially to young Scorpios.

Astrologers claim that the beneficial effects of topaz on a person depend on the color of the stone. Considering the medicinal properties of topaz, it is important to understand who is suitable for a stone of a certain color. Thus, yellow gems are most suitable for Scorpios, Virgos and Leos, blue gems for Sagittarius, and colorless and golden minerals for Gemini. Astrologers recommend blue and green crystals for Cancers, rare red and bright purple crystals for Aries, purple and honey shades for Virgos and Capricorns.

Topaz is a gem that is favorable for almost all zodiac signs; it is a universal talisman stone, and jewelry with it is always spectacular and attractive. And although the mineral does not carry global contradictions, you need to know who topaz is not very suitable for according to their zodiac sign. This stone is not recommended for married Pisces, Libra and Taurus, because, according to astrologers, it can destroy the cozy home that they value so much.

Another important property of the mineral is that it helps a person to be more attentive to life, notice various signs of fate and use them for his own benefit. When choosing jewelry with topaz, you need to take into account the properties of the stone. And zodiac signs such as Leo, Aquarius and Aries will be able to create a family and attract love if they wear jewelry with blue crystals. For Virgos, a ring with a brown stone will give them the opportunity to make decisions that do not depend on their emotional state, for Pisces a blue crystal will give them health for many years, and for Sagittarius it will help them not to waste time on trifles when achieving their only goal.

Jewelry with topaz is a good gift for a wedding anniversary. Some astrologers believe that a piece of jewelry with a gem given to one of the spouses on the 4th, 19th or 23rd wedding anniversary will create special harmony in a married couple. Such a talisman will certainly bring prosperity and good luck. The crystal gives its owners objectivity, honesty, good luck and the favor of others. In addition, he will give beauty to women, and wisdom to men.

To give a gemstone the correct shape and reveal its true color, brilliance and play, jewelers resort to such a technically complex process as cutting. Guided by knowledge of the type, size, hardness and purity of the mineral, craftsmen apply geometrically correct edges to its surface and thereby create magnificent specimens from rough and unpolished stones that will occupy a central place in jewelry.

Round cut

The “round” cut is one of the most popular; it was one of the first to be used. There are several varieties of this type, the most popular is the “diamond” cut, which has up to 57 facets. The “round” cut transmits light well and refracts it beautifully, maximizing the beauty and uniqueness of the stone.

Oval

The “oval,” which appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s, is a type of “round” cut that has an elongated shape and wedge-shaped edges that refract light and reflect all the radiance and brilliance of the mineral. The elongated silhouette is an added benefit - the oval creates the illusion of a larger gemstone. In addition, for example, a ring with a stone of this shape allows you to visually make your fingers longer and more graceful.

Baguette

This type of cut has a rectangular outline and appeared in the 1920s and 1930s, during the period of the spread of Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles. “Baguette” immediately became very popular thanks to its simple lines and stylish geometric shape, which was very different from the traditional ones. When making baguettes, fewer cuts are required than in other cuts, but this type is only suitable for stones of exceptional purity, otherwise even the smallest flaws will be visible.

Emerald

The emerald cut has the shape of a rectangle with cut corners. When processing precious stones in this way, the emphasis is not so much on brilliance, but on the transparency and shade of the mineral, which in this case appear especially brightly. Initially, this type was developed specifically for processing emeralds, but later it began to be used for working with other precious stones that have a large shape and high purity.

Cabochon

“Cabochon” is a cutting technique, as well as the stone itself, with a flat base and a semicircle of regular shape without any edges. The name first appeared in France and comes from the word "caboche", which translates as "head". The traditional cabochon is oval in shape, but can be round or pear-shaped. And although most jewelers prefer multifaceted methods of processing minerals, some gemstones look advantageous in this form. Today, this type is most often used for translucent and opaque minerals that have flaws or low refractive indices.

Pear

This type of cut is derived from the classic round cut. It has a teardrop shape, a flat surface and wedge-shaped facets on the edges that beautifully reflect light and give a magnificent shine. When cutting pear-shaped gemstones, it is important to strive for perfect symmetry: the pointed tip should coincide with the center of the rounded side - only under this condition will the concentration of brilliance be maximum. This cut shape looks especially advantageous in jewelry such as a pendant or long classic earrings.

Square

Its name comes from the Latin word “exquadra”, which translates as “square shape”. Precious stones in the form of a square look unusual due to the sides being the same length and the “step” cut, in which all the facets - edges - are applied in stages and strictly parallel to the edges, forming something like a pyramid with a cut off top. “Square”, like other geometric and angular shapes, is most often used to make inserts in rings, bracelets, and earrings.

Princess

The Princess cut is the second most popular cut after the circle cut. Unlike the “square”, it has a larger number of edges that reflect light from the surface of the mineral. The advantages of this type of cut are especially visible on transparent gemstones. In addition, the “princess” allows you to preserve the original weight of the mineral as much as possible.

Marquis

According to legend, this unusual type of cut appeared in France during the reign of Louis XV. Wanting to give his beloved a gift, the king chose a truly luxurious and unusual way. The elongated silhouette of the stone, as planned, was supposed to resemble the magnificent smile of his favorite, the Marquise de Pompadour. For this type, the main thing is the desire for perfect symmetry. The two end points should coincide with each other, dividing the stone into two perfect halves. Marquise cut stones are more often set vertically and are typically found in rings, earrings and necklaces.

Trillion

The “trillion” cut is the youngest method of processing minerals, originating in the 1980s in Amsterdam, and has an interesting triangle shape with smooth or rounded edges. With such processing, symmetry and proportions are also very important - for the correct dispersion of light. This is the only way to best highlight the brilliance and color of precious stones in jewelry.

Heart

The heart-shaped cut resembles a pear, but unlike it, it has a cutout at the top. The romantic shape and amazing radiance are achieved not only through skillful symmetrical processing, but also largely thanks to the intuition of the jeweler when choosing a stone. The two halves of the heart should be rounded and exactly the same, and the cutout should be clear and proportional to the entire stone. Hearts are considered a very popular choice for earrings, pendants and rings.

Starting to work with each sample, the specialist strives to achieve the ideal play of light. It is important to thoroughly grind the material, making sure that the amount of lost mass is as small as possible. As a result of these manipulations, not only the shape should be revealed, but also the color. So, by taking into account various nuances and choosing the type of cut, you can ensure that the stone is perfect for decoration.

To better understand what gemstone cutting is and the types that currently exist, you need to understand the terms used by professionals to name the various elements of a stone:

  • The girdle is the place where the top and bottom of the stone “join.” It is on this dividing line that the fastening in the decoration is usually located.
  • The crown is a spectacular top part.
  • Pavilion – the lower part located below the girdle.
  • Kaletta is the lowest point of the stone.
  • The pad is the largest flat face located on top. Its other name is table or front end.

You can reveal the beauty of a gem (especially transparent and translucent ones) using a method called facet cutting (or bevel cut). It, in turn, is divided into step and diamond. Using various techniques based on these types of grinding, stones are given a variety of shapes (ball, cone, antique, trapezoid and many others).

Stone processing techniques

Data-lazy-type="image" data-src="https://karatto.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/kaboshon-1.jpg" alt=" cabochons" width="280" height="204">!} The most ancient way to give a stone a beautiful shape was grinding. Unnecessary fragments were cut off from the crystal and the craftsmen achieved a perfectly smooth shiny surface. This technique is called "cabochon". Most often, this method is now used to give beautiful shapes to minerals that do not transmit light at all, or are translucent. Flat on one side and convex on the other, the cabochon allows light to reflect off the surface. This type of cut is best suited for “star” stones or samples with a “cat’s eye” effect.

For transparent crystals, the facet cut is best suited. Jewelers who use this technique apply facets, or facets, to the gem, thanks to which rays of light hitting the surface of the stone are refracted, and it begins to shine.

Cutting patterns for transparent or translucent gems can be different, but the main types are considered to be the following:

  1. Wedge processing, which achieves better light reflection performance. It is most often used to give luxurious shapes to diamonds, zircons, rubies, emeralds, topaz and rock crystal.
  2. Faceted processing helps highlight the inner beauty of the crystal. This variety, such as a step cut, is best suited for sapphires, rubies, hyacinths, and emeralds. Depending on the color, the height of the stone may also change: the cut height of light crystals is higher than that of dark ones.
  3. The mixed look combines the previous two; its other name is fantasy. Jewelry treated in this way makes a great impression, but their cost is much higher.

There is another term that is used in the jewelry industry - Russian cut. It appeared when diamonds processed in Russian factories became known in the West. It is known that any master wants to achieve ideal proportions while maintaining as much weight as possible of the crystal. But the Russian cut means that the shape and symmetry of the diamond comes first, so everything unnecessary that interferes with the creation of a diamond of the highest quality must be ruthlessly cut off. By the same principle, the “A” cut type is distinguished, when quality comes first, and the commercial type, when it is important to preserve the weight of the raw material.

Russian cutting has a number of distinctive features, thanks to which stones processed by this method are much more valuable. Thanks to the perfect processing, even with high magnification it is impossible to notice any scratches or traces of polishing. This method is now used all over the world.

Main types of gemstone processing

Round

The round cut was developed at the beginning of the twentieth century. It was then that special tools appeared that made it possible to shape the hardest mineral - diamond. The classic shape for a diamond is a round shape of 57 facets, which allows you to fully reveal the beauty and radiance of the crystal. If you need to process very small samples, you can apply 33 or even 17 edges. However, with this method it is impossible to avoid large losses of raw materials, because you have to cut off up to half of the original mass.

Oval

The Oval cut has been actively used since the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century. The elongated shape and 57 wedge-shaped facets allow the gemstone to shine and shimmer beautifully. Oval-shaped stones are ideal for elegant rings, visually lengthening the fingers and making them more refined.

Marquis

Marquise cut shapes are oval, elongated and pointed at the ends. To some it resembles the mysterious smile of the Marquise de Pompadour, to others (not so romantic) it resembles an ordinary boat. All 55 facets shimmer and look great in exquisite rings, pendants, and earrings.

Pear

The Pear cut involves the application of 55-56 facets, similar to the oval and Marquise. The tapered teardrop-shaped end of the stone is usually set in a setting. The “pear” looks best in a necklace, adding sophistication to the lady and making her neck longer.

Princess

The original "Princess" is a rectangular or square crystal, which most often has 49, 65 or 68 facets. It began to be used already in the late seventies of the twentieth century and was mainly used for wedding rings. When creating jewelry, it was important to protect the right corners of the stone with the setting.

Emerald

A step cut like the “Emerald” cut looks original and very impressive. It is usually used for processing large stones that are distinguished by excellent transparency. A rectangular stone with beveled corners looks great in a variety of decorations. And if “Emerald” cannot boast of bright shine, then the beautiful flashes of light reflected from its surface look mesmerizing.

Heart

The “Heart” cut looks unusually romantic. The technology that produces the heart is similar to the “Pear”. But this is a more complex, time-consuming and expensive method. In order to maintain ideal proportions, the beauty of the edges and the necessary strength, the length and width of the stone must have a 1: 1 ratio.

Trillion

The Trillion cut was invented in Holland relatively recently. In the eighties of the twentieth century, precious stones began to be shaped into a triangle with equal sides. The number of edges can be very different, as well as their shape. Here the jeweler's inspiration and the source material play a major role.

Asher

The Asher method is very similar to the Emerald method, but has more levels. It was very popular in the thirties of the last century, but has not lost its relevance now. Depending on the size of the source, the number of faces can be 25, 49, 72, and so on.

Radiant

The “Radiant” cut combines the characteristics of “Emerald” and “Princess”. This treatment makes it possible to very well show the color of the crystal, its transparency and brilliance. However, this luxurious octagon, which is most often obtained from large blanks, is more suitable for use in men's rings.

Baguette

“Baguette” is a stepped variety that has a rectangular shape. This processing of the stone makes any defects that may be inside the crystal visible even to the naked eye. But at the same time, it gives the stone a very noble, dignified appearance.

Octagon

The Octagon cut also refers to the stepped octagonal type of processing. Using it, the stone is protected from various damages and amazes with its purity, playing and shimmering in the light.

The cushion cut (or antique) is used in cases where the jeweler is required to preserve the weight of the original mineral. This was how it was customary to process diamonds in the 17th – 18th centuries, when the Baroque style was most popular in Europe.

Briolette

The Briolette cut is also one of the ancient methods of processing diamonds, which are distinguished by their large size and elongated shape. The crystal is covered with a large number of triangular faces (usually 56), which allows it to shine and sparkle very brightly.

Square

Stones that have been subjected to stepwise “Square” polishing look beautiful and original in various jewelry, especially in bracelets. The main difference between this type and others is the same length and width of the gem.

Professional jewelers, following their inspiration, do not stop there and continue to develop new spectacular ways of processing precious stones. And having completed training and acquired a special cutting and grinding machine, in principle, anyone can create real masterpieces at home.

One of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a gemstone or finished jewelry piece is the cut. The process by which a rough, unattractive mineral is transformed into a gemstone. The cutter causes the stone to take on a specific shape, reveal its brilliance and color, allowing it to shine in jewelry. This effect is achieved only through high-quality and precise work of a jeweler.

Why is cut so important?

Only with proper cutting, the beauty of the stone is revealed to the maximum, and vice versa, careless work of the cutter can spoil the stone, make it “dead,” and it will not reflect light.

Generally, there are two types of cutting - commercial and fine. The main objective in the first case is to maintain as much weight of the stone as possible, while the second type follows the exact proportions, ideal angles, etc. When a gemstone is cut to the correct proportions, it is able to process light better, creating more intense color and brightness, and appears more attractive. Essentially, the gemstone acts as a mirror for light.

The purpose of cutting gemstones is to reflect as much light as possible. If the crystal has not been cut correctly, the result will be a “lifeless” stone as light will leak out of the pavilion (bottom of the stone) instead of reflecting it back through the crown (top of the stone).

Cutting values can be traced using the example of diamonds - diamonds acquired their beauty and popularity only in the 17th century, when they learned to cut the mineral.

Today there are cutting standards for diamonds; in fact, the price of a stone depends on the accuracy of the master’s work, i.e. cut class.

There is a gradation of cut class:

  • Excellent cut
  • Very Good
  • Good
  • Fair
  • Poor

Each class indicates quality, proportions and symmetry. At the same time, the difference in price between a stone with an excellent cut and a stone, for example, with a satisfactory cut, can differ by 1.5 times or more. Or a stone that weighs more, but due to an unsuccessful cut, can cost less and look like ordinary glass, while a crystal that is lighter in weight, but cut with good proportions will always be highly valued. In addition, unsuccessful cutting can lead to the loss of the stone - its splitting, or create a defect on it; the stone can become fragile.

For diamonds, there is a world cut standard in which the diamond maximizes its unique property - reflecting light. The method created by a mathematician with Russian roots, Marcel Tolkowsky, is round diamonds with 57 facets, later this type of cut began to be called “Russian cut” or “Tolkowsky diamonds”. Unlike diamonds, colored gemstones have variable optical properties and do not have a single ideal cut.

Types of cutting of jewelry stones

Cabochon

Cabochon - the name comes from the old French word “caboche”, which means head. A cabochon cut is a polished gemstone with a flat or slightly rounded bottom and a convex or rounded domed top.

The traditional cabochon is oval, but this cut can also be used in other shapes, including triangles and rectangles. Cabochon is one of the most ancient forms of stone processing; back then the mineral was polished, since it was not technically possible to make an accurate cut.

A large number of jewelry owned by the British royal family have inserts with cabochon stones.

Circle

The round cut is often called the brilliant cut because it was specifically designed for diamonds, but today many gemstones are cut in this shape.

The circle maximizes the natural beauty of the stone; it is optically the most effective.

The round mineral boasts maximum light output, which for the end consumer means greater attractiveness of the finished jewelry.

Oval

Oval - from the Latin word "vum", meaning "egg". The standard number of facets for a gemstone in this cut is 69. For a proper oval, the length to width ratio should be approximately 2:1, although this proportion varies slightly depending on the optical properties of different types of gemstones.

A high-quality oval cut allows the stone to be almost as bright as with an ideal round shape.

Drop or briolette

Briolette is a popular form of gemstone that looks especially good in earrings or pendants. The drop is cut over the entire area, which means that the stone is covered with numerous small areas. Thanks to this, briolettes have their own special charm and are able to reflect light in any direction.

This shape does not have a flat top. In this regard, briolette is one of the most difficult types of gemstone cutting to execute. The form is believed to have originated in India some 800 years ago and was brought to France, where it immediately became a favorite among the nobles until the end of the 17th century.

Marquis

Marquise cut stones are characterized by an elongated oval shape with pointed ends. There is a beautiful legend that this form of cutting originated in the 18th century, when King Louis of France commissioned the court jewelers to create a diamond that would reflect the smile of his lady love.

The name of the stone comes from its association with royalty. The marquise shape is also called the navette cut, the fact is that from the French navette - means a small ship. Indeed, there is some resemblance to the shape of the ship. A marquise cut gemstone is an ideal shape for a woman's fingers, as the pointed ends visually make them more graceful and slender.

Pear shape

The pear-shaped gemstone is available in a variety of variations, although the ideal shape is achieved by maintaining proportions where the length is one and a half times the width.

The pear cut is particularly well suited for colored gemstones as it brings out the natural color of the crystal as much as possible.

This is why jewelers value this stone so much, because jewelry made from it looks very elegant, but at the same time is affordable. Very often, people choose jewelry based on certain properties attributed to minerals. Since ancient times, people have considered topaz to be a stone with magical qualities, such as the ability to prevent intrigue and expose secrets. However, experts in the field of lithotherapy now believe that it has other properties, in addition, the color characteristics of topaz greatly influence what this stone can contribute to.

Description of topaz

Topaz comes in a variety of colors: from blue through blue and green to wine yellow, orange, pink. Colorless topazes are also found. According to its chemical composition, topaz is a fluorine-containing aluminum silicate.

As already noted, in the ancient world, topaz was considered a stone that could reveal secrets. With its help it was possible to influence others, subjugate people and expose intrigues. Therefore, it received the name “stone of psychologists”, “stone of courtiers”.

Ayurveda considers topaz to be a precious stone that gives an energy boost to the intellect, is able to ignite passion, and reduce fear. Owners are recommended to wear it on the index finger of the right hand, preferably in a gold ring or as a pendant around the neck.

  1. Topaz is able to sharpen the reaction to the environment, develops intuition, and enhances premonitions. He is highly valued for his beauty. This stone also has healing powers.
  2. In ancient times, it was believed that golden topaz promotes conception in infertile people and helps to find the joy of motherhood, it heals mad people from insanity, can treat liver disease, and restores normal vision in case of myopia. Topaz gives strength to the weak and beauty to women, is able to bring wealth and recognition, and maintains an optimistic outlook on life.
  3. It is also believed that if you wear topaz framed in silver around your neck, it will relieve asthma attacks, relieve insomnia, sharpen the sense of taste, cure gout, and help with epilepsy.
  4. For chronic diseases, the use of topaz will increase the effectiveness of other healing methods. This stone was also used in the treatment of throat, inflammation of the tonsils, and diseases of the spine.

During the era of geographical discoveries, it was believed that topaz could calm storms, so sailors, going on sea voyages, purchased a ring with topaz.

The word "topaz" comes from the Latin topazus, supposedly derived from the Sanskrit word tapas - heat or fire. Other names for topaz: imperial, Brazilian ruby, heavyweight (in the Urals).

Topaz is an aluminum fluorosilicate. Topazes are often completely colorless or with shades of varying density: pale yellow, cherry brown, blue, pale green, red, pink, golden. There are stones with a “cat’s eye” effect

Physical properties

  • The crystals are prismatic, well formed, rich in facets (rhombic prisms, dipyramids, pinacoids). It occurs in the form of beautiful druses and fine-grained masses (topaz greisen). Characterized by rough shading along the vertical axis of the crystals,
  • Color yellow, smoky, blue, pink, often colorless,
  • glass shine,
  • Characterized by perfect cleavage along (001),
  • Hardness 8,
  • Density 3.5.

Characteristics of the stone

The mineral is sensitive to heat. She is able to change its color. The stone is hard but brittle and breaks easily. This is due to perfect cleavage in all 3 directions. Although the gem is known as a precious mineral, it is found in nature more often than others.

Topaz has a variety of colors due to small inclusions of metals in the atomic lattice of the mineral. The shape of crystals is most often in the form of a tetrahedral prism with a flat or pyramidal base. The peculiarities of the gem include its vertical grooves running along the prismatic edges.

Topaz stone, whose properties allow it to be classified as a particularly hard mineral, is the standard of hardness (8 on the Mohs scale). The high density and high specific gravity gave rise to calling the gem a “heavyweight”. The mineral was nicknamed this by the Ural miners, who continued to use this name for a long time.

Crystals are afraid of direct rays, under which they tend to fade. Everything fades except the colorless ones: both irradiated and non-irradiated crystals. Wine, tea, pink, purple and rare red gems are susceptible to rapid and uneven fading.

Green and blue topaz stones burn out more slowly – over the course of years. But discoloration occurs before complete burnout. However, natural stones tend to restore their natural color when in the dark.

This variety of shades is caused by a certain deviation in the structure of the crystal. Due to this, it became possible to refine (burn) a natural blue crystal to a rich, deep color.

The mineral is unstable to sulfuric acid.

The richest deposits are Ouro Preto and Diamontino (Brazil). The most beautiful crystals of almost all existing colors are mined there. Especially in price are the blue and transparent minerals found and the so-called “Brazilian rubies” (red stones).

  1. The Saxon Vosges (Schneckestein) is considered the most important deposit in Europe. The history of this deposit dates back to 1700. It is known for its green, colorless and yellow-wine minerals. The green stones were named “Saxon diamond” in honor of the deposit.
  2. Sri Lanka is famous for its colorless crystals or so-called water sapphires. No less valuable are yellow-orange stones - Indian topazes.

This mineral is also mined in Russia. There are 2 large deposits known. One is located along the eastern slopes of the Ural Mountains, and the other is located in Transbaikalia near Nerchinsk. There is also a deposit in eastern Siberia, but it is less known. In these areas, crystals of various shades are mined: blue, yellow, green, reddish, pale brown.

Story

The origin of the name of this mineral still remains unclear. According to one version, the stone is named after the Greek island near which it was discovered by shipwrecked sailors. Another theory is that the name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning fire and heat, from this information it can be understood that topazes in the area where they were discovered had a golden-orange color.

Topaz has been valued by people since ancient times. Archaeologists have discovered ritual objects made from topaz, as well as various jewelry. It is known that this stone was highly valued during the Renaissance and was very popular in Rus', where people knew it under the name “heavy weight”, which the mineral received due to its high density.

In addition, some topazes can be found in museums. These are huge crystals that were found in the bowels of the earth. The smallest - 10 kg, is kept in the St. Petersburg Museum, and the largest - 117 kg - was discovered in Ukraine. Stones of unusual size have also been found in Brazil; museums in the country hold samples weighing 31.8 and 50.4 kg.

Types and colors of topaz

Initially, natural topaz is transparent and colorless, but in the mines stones are found that amaze with their variety of shades. All kinds of colors are obtained due to various impurities in the composition of the mineral.

  1. Yellow, green, blue, blue, pink, red topazes can be found, but this is not the limit - there are polychrome minerals that have several colors at once. This rare coloring is explained not only by the chemical composition, but also by the characteristics of the crystal lattice of the stone, which causes a certain refraction of light, resulting in an unusual effect.
  2. When exposed to sunlight, topazes lose their color, which explains the fact that most of the stones discovered during excavations were colorless.
  3. But the directed thermal effect, special processing, allows you to give the mineral a rich blue tint, which is how stones of this color are obtained.

Many subspecies of topaz differ not only in their color, but also in the properties that these stones have.

The stone looks regal and is considered one of the most exquisite minerals. It is believed that it makes a person’s aspirations more lofty and does not tolerate deceitful people. This stone can also serve as a talisman for those who are looking for some information, strive to get to the bottom of the truth and unravel a complex case.

Sailors believed that blue topaz on a ship would help ensure a successful voyage and calm the storm. As for its medicinal properties, this stone can cure depression, returning its owners to a positive attitude and good spirits. It is also recommended for high blood pressure and asthma.

Yellow

The color of this stone can range from golden to brown. A similar variety of topaz was widespread in Ancient India, and it was there that the healing properties of this stone were discovered. It is believed that it makes a person’s character more calm and balanced, allowing him to discard disturbing emotions.

It also has a positive effect on the functioning of the liver and stomach, and speeds up metabolism. Stone jewelry can protect against mental disorders. As for magical properties, yellow topaz amulets helped people see lies and uncover conspiracies.

This is the commercial name for blue topaz. The stone has a special cut and is highly valued in jewelry. In Russia, such topazes can be found quite rarely, but in the West they are popular.

Smoky topaz or rauchtopaz

This stone is not related to topaz, despite its name. In fact, this is one of the varieties of quartz, which, due to its unusual color, was mistakenly classified as topaz, but the name stuck and became entrenched in the trade classification.

  • It is believed that rauchtopaz has a beneficial effect on sleep and also allows you to see prophetic dreams.
  • It calms and neutralizes stress, helps cope with negative emotions.
  • This stone puts a person into a meditative state, so it is not recommended for people who are too dreamy - it will lead them even more away from reality.

Pink

This type of mineral is considered one of the most expensive, along with red topaz. In India, it is believed that the pink stone can magically restore lost hope to a person, ease sorrowful experiences and help cope with stress.

Green topaz is a fairly rare, collectible stone. Its color is natural, formed due to natural exposure to radiation.

Blue

Minerals of this color are obtained artificially using heat treatment. In the jewelry market, blue topazes are highly valued and have their own special trade names. As for properties, blue topaz has the same qualities as blue.

White

It is believed that this mineral is able to strengthen the human immune system and nervous system, and have a beneficial effect on the emotional state. White topaz amulets are a very good protective agent. In addition, this stone is used to maintain clarity of thought.

This stone belongs to the yellow topaz and has the same characteristics and properties as the yellow variety described above.

How to detect a fake?

Topaz is popular and has a high value, so it is not surprising that scammers counterfeit this stone in an effort to make more money. In order not to fall for tricks, you need to be able to distinguish natural stone from fakes.

  1. A very simple way to help recognize imitation is to rub the stone on a woolen cloth. If it becomes electrified and paper begins to stick to it, it means that you have real topaz in front of you.
  2. A natural mineral has high hardness and can scratch quartz or crystal, but a fake one does not have such properties.
  3. Natural stones remain cold for a long time, so if the mineral immediately warms up in your hands, then most likely it is a fake.
  4. It is worth noting that light-colored topazes are counterfeited much less frequently - they are not that rare.
  5. If you have a solution of methylene iodide, you can lower the topaz into it - the real one will end up at the bottom of the vessel, and the artificial one will remain floating on the surface.
  6. Natural samples, as a rule, have minor defects and cracks, while artificial imitation has perfect smoothness.
  7. You should also be wary of the too bright and saturated color of the topaz. In nature, there are no stones of poisonous shades; real minerals have calm, gentle tones, so excessive brightness is a sign of a fake.

In order for jewelry to remain bright and attractive, it is important to properly care for them, as well as be careful when using the products directly:

  • Remove jewelry when doing household chores: particles from household chemicals can damage the stone. In addition, the structure of the stone is easily chipped: one unsuccessful but precise blow can break the stone along the cleavage line.
  • Try to put on jewelry after you have chosen an outfit, done your hair and applied makeup: regular contact with cosmetics can cause the item to tarnish.
  • Try to put on and wear jewelry in the evening, and in the daytime, hide it from the sun, otherwise the stones may quickly fade or become completely discolored.

It is important to lightly clean your jewelry regularly. To do this, dilute a little soap or detergent in warm water, and soak the stones in a soapy solution for about 20 minutes. After this, the jewelry can be easily cleaned with a regular soft toothbrush, dried and put back in place.

Storing jewelry also has its own peculiarities: it is better to place jewelry separately from each other and wrap it in soft cloths to avoid damage.

How much does topaz cost?

Prices for the mineral depend on the type of stone. The most expensive and most valuable are red shades, pink, blue and dark blue topazes. The cost of such stones starts from 300-600 dollars per carat. Yellow and brown varieties have a slightly lower price, but are not cheap.

If we talk about jewelry, then the cost is also affected by the metal in which the topaz is framed. For example, gold jewelry with this stone will cost more than silver jewelry.

May look like many other gemstones, depending on the color. In fact, the ancient Greeks seem to have mistaken peridot for topaz. Orange-brown and imperial topaz is similar to citrine, zircon, chrysoberyl, golden beryl and sapphire.

Pink is similar to morganite, tourmaline, kunzite, rose quartz and spinel. Yellow can be compared to chrysoberyl, heliodor, zircon and yellow sapphire. Blue topaz is similar to aquamarine, zircon, spinel and euclase.

White shares some characteristics with diamond, zircon, rock crystal and goshenite. Topaz is chemically related to sillimanite, andalusite, canonite, kyanite and mullite.

The most common are yellow minerals, but the variety of shades of gems does not end there. Topazes can be transparent, blue, pink or bright red, purple, brown, golden and pink-yellow.

The bulk of mineral production occurs in Pakistan. The color of the crystal is not affected by its chemical properties or impurities.

  • Gems owe their color to various defects in the structure of the atomic lattice.
  • Most of the minerals used in the jewelry industry have an enhanced color.
  • Colorless stones are exposed to harmless radiation until a brown tint is formed, and then heated until the crystal acquires a blue or blue color.

Only experienced jewelers can distinguish between natural and artificial topazes. The only external factor indicating that work has been done on the coloring of the stone is the oversaturated shade of the gem. Natural mineral has warmer and softer tones. A disadvantage of artificially colored stones is rapid discoloration when exposed to the sun.

Cheap types of citrines can often be passed off as topaz. Bohemian, Indian, Spanish gems have nothing to do with natural crystal. In most cases this is smoky quartz, subject to heat treatment. Also, instead of faceted topaz, unscrupulous sellers may offer other analogues, both natural and synthetic. Thus, blue minerals are similar to aquamarines or zircons, while colorless ones resemble rock crystal.

In most cases, it is impossible to determine the authenticity of topaz and the buyer can only check the crystal for hardness. Such minerals are much harder than their quartz counterparts and should leave scratches when passed over glass.

If you touch the skin with a gem, a pleasant chill runs through it. This feeling appears due to the low thermal conductivity of the material. Also in natural crystals often there are defects in the form of cracks and foreign inclusions, which is not found in artificial analogues.

Professional jewelers insert topaz into a ring, bracelet or pendant. The stone is also used to decorate sets. The cost of topaz depends on its weight, color and transparency of the crystal, as well as the quality of the cut. The gem must be protected from temperature changes and mechanical stress in the cleavage areas.
